OT - RUSH appreciation thread

Postby S2M » Fri Aug 08, 2008 8:15 am

Ok...after numerous mentions in the other thread, you KNEW this was going happen...

Rush is the band I've seen the most (63 times, and counting). Starting with my WAY cool aunt that 'kinnapped' me and brung to my first RUSH show at the tender age of 10(1979)....WOOOOO! And a legend was born.

but I digress.....Journey ain't the only band with a gripe about the HOF.

BTW, please take time to read, and sign this -

Does Journey have a petition going?

Not that I hold the RRHOF in high esteem anyway but Rush is THE biggest snub from that place. These guys have influenced more acts than most of the others that are already in there.

Rush rules! Great albums, incredible shows lasting 3 hours, a 30+ year catalog, the world's greatest drummer, great guitar solos, and the same line-up since 1974! What more can a fan ask for?

I've seen them twice so far and I hope to see them many more times in the future.

I can't say I've seen them 63 times, but this year was my sixth show. They're the only major act that I've seen more than five times apart from Journey. Couldn't really care less about the RRHOF until they start recognizing great bands like Rush and Journey.

I've seen them about 20 times since 1978 (they don't tour the UK as often as they do the States, or it would have been more). Like Dave said, they have influenced more bands and musicians than the majority who are already inducted put together.

You can always come up with reasons and excuses why Journey haven't been considered, however flimsy (periods of inactivity, changes of personnel etc), but I can't think of a single reason why Rush have not been a shoe-in to the RRHOF. They sell out big arenas and stadiums, they produce quality music (19 studio albums of original music - most of them platinum - 7 live albums & DVDs), they consistently produce some of the most entertaining concerts out there, they are individually three of the most respected musicians in their field, they've been together for over 33 years, they are one of the most quoted influences among other rock artists, etc etc....

I find their exclusion baffling.

Because in the eyes of the RNRHOF, just because they have sold MILLIONS of albums, they are not "commercially" successful. They have only had ONE Top 40 hit.

And because Jann Werner is an arrogant prick with an agenda.

I liked Rush until Grace Under Pressure. After that, I lost interest. Hemispheres is still a great record though.

My favorite Rush era is from "2112" through "Moving Pictures". "Signals" is also pretty good but, I too didn't care much for anything from "Grace Under Pressure" onward. Since then, however, I've grown to love most of those albums also, especially "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire".

When I was driving to my 2nd Rush show in St. Paul in May of this year I turned off my RUSH CD and heard Rush on the radio. So I got to listen to both Rushes on my way to the show.

Power Windows is VERY under rated. Some fine playing on that one. Hold Your Fire has some excellent songs and playing as well. RUSH is my favorite band of all time. I think their strong point is being progressive without forgetting how important the song is. There is some good progressive music out there, but much of it doesn't sound like a "song" if you get where I'm coming from.

Rush was the reason I started playing drums 25 years ago. Huge fan... They could care less about it really. Their fans care way more about it than they do and I think if they received it they MIGHT snub it or refuse to accept it.. Who knows..

It is amazing that they have the same line up, same singer and they play better now than ever. Geddy is a better singer now than back then even though some range is lost. His voice is more pleasant and not so shrill even in the higher notes. Alex plays with just as much fire as always and is a frikin nut on stage.. And Neil..... He goes without saying... I have read all of Neils books and Ghost rider is the best. It is about the story of his "recovery by motorcycling 55,000 miles over 2+years after losing his daughter in a car accident and then not even a year later his wife from cancer.

From Canda to Alaska then all the way to Belize in southern Mexico he documented every experience and emotion along the way.. It is a very moving book and anyone that likes to read should get it..... Now..... The ending is awesome and true ! It would make and incredible movie and there was a rumor that Kevin Spacey would play him as they look a bit alike.. The rights were sold by Neil to of all people the daughter of the late great jazz drummer Buddy Rich but nothing has happened.

There is a section of their live show where Alex does a comedy rant.. Every show.. Its random and mostly side splitting funny but sometimes not.

Example..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcRCFHVx ... CF&index=0

There are a blue million of them so enjoy..

I have "Ghost Rider" but never finished it. I got sick of all the talk of the "fat Americans". Seemed to be very judgmental of Americans in general.

He's quite judgemental of everything and everybody in that book. But that's exactly the point. When you are in the depths of despair, as he was during that period, you become judgemental of everything and it all seems black and white.

I thought it was a great book, but heavy going. I preferred his 'Travelling Music' which has some really funny anecdotes.

I disagree with that. I think Snakes and Arrows is the best thing they've done in 20 years (probably since Hold Your Fire) and I was pleased that they (the band) were proud enough of their new material to play so much of it. That's always been one of the features of the band that earns them so much respect. They don't rest on their laurels and play the same stuff year after year. They push forward, and most of their fans happily follow them into new territory.

I didn't say the entire album sucked, but much of it did. The crowd obviosuly didn't like oit either. They would file out for beers, bathroom and food when they played the new stuff in hordes. They also didn't go crazy like after Limelight etc... I understand having new stuff is key but overloading the set with it in my opinion cheats the fans who have bought, rebought and stayed with the band for 20+ years. THey have so many hits/fan favs from deep cuts, that true Rush fans know, they could play Limelight & the commercially successful radio songs for the casual fans, and throw in alternating deep cuts as well as mix in a few of the new songs rather than have half the set "newer" stuff is all I am saying.

AS for the Journey comment, broadbrushing people is just nonsensical. I have Revelation in my decks. One, the new "old" stuff and 2 the New, New stuff. I love a few of the new songs (never walk away I fancy sunshower as well) as well as the old new rework, I only hope for mine and everyone else's sake they don't drag the show down with 5-6 new songs when they usually only play 12-15. They have too many "old" songs we would like to hear. Again Have the band play 5-6 commercial 5-6 deeper cuts and maybe 3 new songs. It is what they should do when they are basically a nostalgia tour. If they tour to support the album more readily, drop the ticket prices and fans can choose whether they want them to skip over older classics for the new. For the price, they should not! I expect to hear stone in love etc.. and frankly can think of a number of older deeper cut songs I would like them to someday work into the regiment. I will be unhappy with 5 cuts from revelation even though I like the album and play it almost daily.

Rush's cardinal sin on both legs of the S&A tour was putting 5 songs in a row at the beginning of set two. Had they paced things/broken them up, you wouldn't feel like they did 9 songs. S&A isn't my favorite Rush album by any stretch of the imagination.

Having been in a Rush tribute band, I can tell you Rush fans are impossible to please.

I want to hear new stuff from any band I follow. I don’t just want to wallow in past glories. I’m sure back in the early 80’s there were people moaning that Journey/Rush (take your pick) were playing too much new stuff from ‘Escape’/’Moving Pictures’ and not enough tunes from ‘Look into the Future’/’2112’. Some of today’s new songs will become tomorrow’s classics and I want to be able to say I was there when they first played them. I remember going to a Rush gig in 1979 when they played two songs from the, at that time unreleased, ‘Permanent Waves’. I thought they sounded fantastic and just wanted to hear more.

For the bands (both Journey and Rush), they obviously enjoy playing new material. It keeps it fresh for them – I’m sure they must be bored to tears playing some of those old songs that people expect to hear EVERY show.

Also, in the case of Rush, they have stated their desire to produce a live DVD of every tour they do from now on. Therefore it makes sense to include more songs from their current studio album, otherwise it is just a regurgitation of past tours.

Rush has always been one of my favorites and have seldom been given the credit they deserve. I saw them twice on this second leg of the S&A tour, I thought the response to the new music was pretty enthusiastic. I do agree that they could have broken it up a bit more, but I also appreciate that they did play stuff from the new album, it was the S&A tour after all. I give them a lot of credit for putting out new music and then playing it, some of my favorites are touring every year with nothing new to offer. Rush could certainly tour without new music and still draw the crowds. I also felt that they were two of the best shows I've seen this summer, they are complete professionals and give 110% every time regardless of the size of the audience. Of course everyone has their favorites and would like to hear more old stuff, but with that much back catalog they can't play it all.

As for Neil's books, Ghostrider was a very tough read as it was a very painful story, I had that book a long time before I read it as I knew it would be a hard one to get thru, he certainly lays it all out in the open and you can really feel how much he is suffering. Traveling Music is a great read and much more upbeat and enjoyable.

I agree about the new music. Jeez. All these whiners that don't want to hear so much new music. Hello -- They play like frickin 3 hours. I think at least 2 hours is the older stuff so you still get plenty of back catalog for your money. Just wait until they get too old to play more than 1-1/2 hours and want to play 6 new songs. Then the REAL bitching will begin!
