My usual passion for the games is tempered by my disdain for China's ruling class and history of human right violoations. It's nothing I'm doing consciously, but it's unfortunate, because it should be about the athletes and the spirit of competition. Besides, with all the doping scandals of the past decade, a lot of people tend to regard the participants as guilty until proven innocent.

Outside of the US, I think China is overwhelming favourite to walk away with the most medals, followed by USA and then Russia. There are probably 10 countries who could possibly be fourth, including Britain as a long shot.

i see China is the favorite over all medals, but imho USA will still give them a run for their money...
is it still that the most "gold" won is considered for overall performance not "total medal count"?

That men's relay last night was amazing!! Especially considering that the French were heavily favored and were trash talking before the event (" we are going to squash the US. That's why we are here.")
The pure joy on Michael Phelps' face when they won that one was beautiful to see!!

That relay will definitely be one of the best races in Olympic history! The men's team showed a lot of character and sportsmanship by not responding to France with trash talk of their own...and the U.S. were the underdogs...Imagine what France felt like standing there with SILVER around their necks

The women (girls, I say) gymnasts were really messing up bad last night...lots of huge falls & out of bounds for China & US. The men's swimming relay was really fun to watch...to think that one of them nearly drowned as a child! Women's swimming - was soooo close for U.S. Hoff to win the Gold last night...just a fingernail away...and, she was only there as fill in cuz another US girl was tested positive for banned substances.

There is a whole blog on CNN sports on why the men's beach volleyball teams are wearing shirts and the lack of clothing for the female girls beach volleyball teams!

It's the fish oil in their diet, at least that is what some scientists think.
