I'd always choose those two:

Phil Collins - Can't stop loving you

Genesis - No son of Mine

I like Phil but he always sounds so much better live then on record. It must be all the weird processing on his vocals in the studio.

I don't think he could pull off the more vocally demanding Journey tunes but he could certainly do justice to a lot of the catalogue.

Oh man, I dunno. I like a few Genesis tunes with Phil singing, but IMHO, his solo stuff kinda rots. My respects to those of you who like him, though. :?

Pretty much my assessment of the situation. It IS very easy to make his voice sound processed and computer-generated on records, and that has happened a bit.

As far as Phil singing Journey, he never did have the range Perry had, but there is probably some stuff he could cover. He was definitely influenced by 60s soul, so some of the vocal phrasing wouldn't be that hard. The issue most people would have is that he has a very distinctive voice, so it would sound like Phil Collins regardless of what he was singing. That could be good or bad. I could see him doing justice to a few songs.

Try this one on for size....there is at least the possibility that has HAS sung Journey before. Genesis was known to put a medley of other songs in the live versions of Turn It On Again, and occasionally there was some REALLY off the wall stuff. The Who, Rolling Stones, soul music might be staples....and then you get something like Karma Chameleon on some bootlegs. Not saying it has happened, but the possibility exists as they tended to put past AND current stuff in those medleys--and some of the "current" stuff was NOT what you would expect them to play.

Ya know what Phil Collins singing Journey would sound like to me? Phil Collins singing Journey.

And I don't know if that would be a good or bad thing, but I'm not holding my breath to find out.

Tinnitus,[1] from the Latin word for "ringing"[2]) is the perception of sound in the human ear in the absence of corresponding external sound(s).

Tinnitus can be perceived in one or both ears or in the head. It is usually described as a ringing noise, but in some patients it takes the form of a high pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound, or as ticking, clicking, roaring, "crickets" or "tree frogs" or "locusts", tunes, songs, or beeping.

I'm a die-hard Collins fan, and think he's one of the best live performers on the face of the planet. I own most of his stuff, so again... HUGE fan!

With that said, he would have an extremely hard time with most of the songs. Also, when he sings, he has NO vibrato in his vocals. That's the main thing that stands out about Perry when he sings, so a complete lack of it would seem extremely strange and different. It wouldn't sound anything like Journey. I think it would be pretty damn interesting though, and I'd LOVE to hear the collaberation!

Love Phil Collins and always have, but Phil isn't pulling off a Journey tune. Maybe a track from "Arrival", but certainly nothing from the Perry catalog!

I could hear him doing something like Send Her My Love, and a few from Raised on Radio or Trial By Fire. Maybe some other songs like Stay Awhile or something if tuned down a bit.

The issue you are going to face is he is going to sound like Phil Collins regardless of what he is singing. His voice is just THAT distinctive. That along will change the feel of the songs, as he was never the smooth tenor that Journey has. It would be different--whether that translates to good is another question altogether.

Phil's an OK singer but no way in hell do I want to hear him sing anything Journey-related.

I dunno. I could see him vastly improving the vocal on several of the Generations songs...

Phil's an awesome fuckin singer. Not everyone needs to have the range of a 12-year old girl and the vibrato of a fat opera singer to be so. He's a unique singer and he's still very melodic.

Although competent and original (after he escaped from under Peter Gabriel's shadow) Collins is far from the best vocalist in music.

Collins voice is monotone for the most part. Limited range, has to scream on the high notes. But.... his voice fits his music....perfectly. You can tell he writes the song as he's singing it. ;)

Phil is a great singer, but as a songwriter he is a master - One of the best popular songwriters of the past 30 years. His abilities seem to have waned a bit later in his career, but he simply bleeds melody. Amazing guy.

Collins has a unique voice (as with Perry's) and to be sure I think the guitars on the solo albums can be pretty Schonesque at times, but a totally non-Journey voice.

Plus I think he just said he's through singing for good now...
