OT - Solo albums by frontmen

Postby S2M » Sat Aug 16, 2008 5:05 am

I really don't know how to pose this question.....hmmmm.

Which lead singer's(singers') solo album(s) are just as good as their stuff with their band? Not grammatically kirect, but whatever....

Again, as always with my questions - NO JOURNEY RELATED ANSWERS!!!!!

1) Harry Hess(Harem Scarem)/ Just Another Day - absolute bliss. This guy IS Harem Scarem.
2) Steve Plunkett (Autograph)/ My Attitude - 'When the Tables Turn', and 'If I Had My Way' are amazing.
3) Phil Collins(duh!)/No Jacket Required - 1985 was THE best year, and that CD absolutely smoked. Memo to BJG: 'Billy Don't Lose my Number' IS the 'Back Talk' of this album!

4) James Christian(house of Lords)/ Meet the Man and Rude Awakening - this guy could be the new JSS in this forum if all the Spoons, Wigglers, Martinizers, and Sotowhatevers were well informed....
5) Geddy Lee(DUH!)/My Favorite Headache - OK, maybe not exactly on par with RUSH, but 98/100.

What say you?

I like both of Lou Gramm's solo albums nearly as well as the Foreigner albums.

Leave it to Dave to remind me of my omissions....

I concur, sir.....However. I like Long, Hard Lokk a wee bit more.

Eric Martin ~ Somewhere In The Middle (ooozes soul!) followed closely by I'm Going Sane (more rocked up)

JSS ~ Lost In The Translation and lovin' the samples so far from Beautiful Mess (ooozes soul!)

I was also impressed with Jon Bon Jovi's Young Guns soundtrack, some great gems on there, such as "Miracle".

Ozzy and Dio both have a lot of good solo stuff in comparison to their group efforts ( Sabbath, Rainbow, etc.)

Off the top of my head, Sammy and Eric Clapton.

Great idea for a topic:

1. Burton Cummings - Plus Signs
2. Don Henley - The End of the Innocence
3. Jim Peterik - Above The Storm
4. Robert Lamm - Subtlety and Passion
5. Steve Lukather - Ever Changing Times
6. Jimi Jamison - Empires
7. David Pack - The Secret of Movin' On
8. Anything by Brian Wilson
9. Graham Nash - Songs for Survivors
10. Any Mark Knopfler
11. John Fogerty - Revival

I'm tempted to include Neal Schon's Beyond The Thunder, but it's not really a fair comparison to Journey since it's instrumental and geared towards a completely different audience than the core Journey audience... Plus now I just read your no Journey related clause ;)

Here's one for RIP.

Don Dokken's - Up From the Ashes

I felt this release was as good as any Dokken album and that is coming from major George Lynch fan.

I've always just considered that album to be the next Dokken studio album after "Back for the Attack".

Have you peeps gone daft??

SP-FTLOSM

 imho

I think all of Neal's stuff is as good as Journey's. I can't pick a fav but probably Soul SirkUS, or Piranha Blues. what? :? Neal is the front man of Journey. (he is for me anywho)

i like JSS stuff much better than Yngwie. any album--pick one. not that anyone has ever heard any of them. :P I'll choose Lost In The Translation for today.

I think Michael W. Smith has done pretty well for himself since he left Amy Grant's band. The new cd is not out yet so we'll have to wait to vote on which one is best by him as a solo.

good question. we'll take some time with this one.

Ahh yes, reminds me of seeing House of Lords about a year ago in a little place in eastern NC (aka BFE) with about 15 people in attendance. Band was killer and James Christian hasn't lost a bit vocally.
