Someone started a thread like this on my church's networking site. I thought it would be a cool idea for here...

Name your ultimate 11 rock guitar solos...

11. "Feeling That Way" ~ Neal Schon (Journey)...I love most of Schon's solos on the "Infinity" album but this is my favorite.

10. "Another Day" ~ John Petrucci (Dream Theater)...Slightly different than most of Petrucci's playing, more melodic and less technical. Great stuff.

9. "Who's Crying Now" ~ Neal Schon (Journey)...Schon was actually ticked when he cut this solo on the studio version. The band wanted him to make it simple, so he played the simplest thing he could think of and now it's one of the most memorable. The live version is usually even better.

8. "Comfortably Numb" ~ David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)...Classic Gilmour tone and melodicism.

7. "Stairway to Heaven" ~ Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)...The whole song is classic even if it is overplayed but I always love hearing this solo.

6. "This is the Time (1990)" ~ Al Pitrelli (Savatage)...The solo in this track encapsulates Pitrelli's style very well.

5. "Flashpoint" ~ Rex Carroll (Whitecross)...It starts off sounding like an EVH rip-off but ends on a more classical note.

4. "When the Children Cry" ~ Vito Bratta (White Lion)...One of the simplest solos I can think of, yet a simply beautiful melody.

3. "Cliffs of Dover" ~ Eric Johnson...The live version from his "Live From Austin TX" DVD is simply stunning. Unmatchable tone, technical skill, and feeling all wrapped into one tune.

2. "Still They Ride" ~ Neal Schon (Journey)...Schon starts this solo off in his typical melodic style but it builds in intensity for a flourish of notes at the end. Very well crafted solo.

1. "Hitch a Ride" ~ Tom Scholz (Boston)...This has long been my favorite solo. Scholz delivers an awesome melody here.

I'll try.....

1) 'Gates of Babylon' - even though Blackmore is a wanker on axe. I'm tired of his 20 min. solos. This song is the EPITOME of guitar solo.

2) 'Below Zero' - Enchant - Doug Ott is a way underrated guitarist. Do yourself a favor, check him out below. The video is from Guitar Hero.

4) 'Stars' - Hear n' Aid - Too many to name. Just a fun solo to listen to.

5) 'Always With Me, Always With You' - Joe Satriani - defies words. Perhaps my favorite song ever. See below.

6) 'The Last In Line' - Dio - Vivian is another Axe god. Too bad he went backwards joining Def Lep.

7) 'Gunshy' - Arcara - Short but sweet solo by Larry tripp.

Played that song for my son the day he was born. Cheesy, I know. But he knows that's "his" song from me and he digs that!

I'm not talking about the entire song but the beautifully melodic solo by Vito Bratta. Perfect for that song.

OK. Some on my favorites:

1. Time - Pink Floyd (Gilmour attacks his axe on this one and hits those damn high notes at 4:11 and 4:20 that sounds like his amplifier overloads. It just totally screams)
2. I'm the One - Van Halen (Eddie smokes on this one. Some super hot fast licks that just flow with the rhythm of this song. Sounds like his fretboard is going to catch fire)
3. Boston - Hitch a Ride (Perfect melodic solo with great harmonies. No speed needed here. Pure perfection. Interesting that the song ends with the solo)
4. Burn - Deep Purple (Great staccato playing by Blackmore with some nice classical touches. Tough to pick the best Blackmore solos. So many great ones)
5. Octavarium - Dream Theater (A nice melodic solo at the end of the tune for a change. Shows Petrucci can play with feel & emotion when he wants to)
6. Tom Sawyer- Rush (Is there a quirkier solo than this that sounds so good?)
7. Do You Feel - Frampton (The solo after the talkbox stuff just kills. Builds to a frenzy at the end)
8. Any Neal Schon
9. La Grange - ZZ Top (Nasty, dirty, rawkin blues/rock solo. Billy Gibbons, King of the pinch harmonics)
10. Kid Charlemagne - Steely Dan (Perfect example of jazz/rock solo perfectly fit to the melody of the song)

I'm being a dick here and including 13. My amps go to 13 anyway, and my LP has 8 pick-ups, so Nigel needs to update his shit. Really in no order here

13. Van Halen - Dreams, second solo - One of Eddie's finest and most underrated moments

12. Toto - I'll Be Over You - Lukather doing his best Neal Schon and one of his most emotional moments on record.

11. 25 or 6 to 4 - Chicago - Terry Kath, R.I.P.

10. Alan Parsons Project - Sirius/Eye in the Sky - Great melodic playing here

9. Dennis DeYoung - Desert Moon Live Extended '09 - Not sure how long Tommy's been playing this solo, but he blew my mind with this in May. The studio solos are good too, very melodic

8. Pride of Lions - Turn To Me - I love this guitar duel at the end. Classic.

7. Journey - I'll Be All Right Without You - This is everything that a Neal solo should be - great tone, great phrasing, great emotion, and a bit of shred

6. Dream Theater - Under A Glass Moon - Love the Another Day and Octavarium shout-outs, but this is the best Petrucci solo... it shows off a little bit of everything in his arsenal and comes from a time when Petrucci played much better solos. This solo, and the Another Day solo, were the first things I heard by Petrucci and they immediately made me want to listen to DT's entire catalogue, which I soon did.

5. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing - Cliche choice, but cliche for a reason - it's that good

4. Bachman Turner Overdrive - Lookin Out For #1 - Randy Bachman is the most underrated guitar player out there. Tasty jazzy playing with an edge here

3. James LaBrie - Slightly Out of Reach - From Dream Theater vocalist's solo album, Elements of Persuasion. The first half of this "guitar solo" is actually a keyboard running through a guitar processor and amplifier. Fooled me for a long time - sounds like a guitar with a wah half-cocked. Then the second half is a great guitar solo from a guy named Marco Sfogli, who will probably be on the guitar players' map soon. Incredible melody and teamwork between Sfogli and the keyboard player here.

2. Steely Dan - Kid Charlemagne - Again, a bit of a cliche, but for a reason - It's amazing how well any of these Larry Carlton's licks fit into different songs.

1. R.E.O. Speedwagon - Roll With The Changes - Gary, get your head out of the brown paper bag and get clean. Nothing fancy or technical here, just great balls to the wall rock n roll playing.

That's the most memorable part of that tune. It's a good tune all the way around but I could hear the solo in my head when I read your comment.

That is a great solo and Petrucci actually nods his head to several different players in that solo, including Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan, etc.

Yea, this is the one solo I wish Luke would basically stick completely to the studio version when he plays live (if it ever happens again :/). Both solos are beautifully phrased and thought out. What he does on the Tribute Concert for Jeff boot is a little bit out of place for the song.
