New song, decent quality (for YouTube)......I'm loving the shit out of it! 8) Further proof of the return of 'tallica, though I never thought they left! :D

Not me. I think it is terrible.

The boys have lost the drive that kept them on the edge as humans, musicians and bandmates IMO. That is the difference in the music. This song sounds like it has no life of it's own. It is pieces of the past, and not all of them are good. Part of the middle guitar break reminds me of Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia".

When bands get this old and stale, they need to look for other writers that appreciated them, and have them come up with material from the outside looking in, so that it brings out the best from a fan's perspective.

This will be a big miss and final nail in their coffin I suspect. I was hoping that it would be a great record. If this is their strongest song, RIP Metallica.

IMO, there is a little bit of every era they've gone through in this song which is why I am digging it. In reviews from people that have heard the first five songs from Death Magnetic, they list this one as the weakest if that means anything to you. I don't want another MOP......I want progression that has inflections of the past here and there.

wow, that song meanders a bit, doesn't it? i liked it as i was listening to it, but i can't remember a thing about it after it's done. doesn't really have a hook. it may take a few more listens to grow on me.

Maybe they wrote it in haiku form. It doesn't have anything repetative enough to stick in your head. I'm not digging yet.

Agree Loneman!! It sounds like Metallica to me!! Love it!! lowdbrent, Did you like St. Anger? This is like the Journey argument. Some people don't like it if it doesn't sound like Journey and some people don't like it if it does. Also, I'm not going to judge the whole album from one song.

I can't stand to listen to much of anything by this band after the self-titled album.

Listen to it a few times......it will grow on you. At first I liked it, but thought "when is everything going to fit together", then after a few listens, it becomes clear. Like I mentioned, this song has a bit of every era of Metallica, and I am loving it. Also as mentioned, this may be the weakest song on the album (people who have reviewed a few songs), but I think the point they wanted to get across is just what I said....bits of every era.

Hellz yea brotha! Never really thought much about it, but Metallica does kind of come down to the similar Journey argument don't they? Can't believe I never made that connection! :?

After St. Anger I was afraid that they couldn't be this melodic again. There are things I would change about the song (and production) but overall I think it's awesome.

An underwhelming and plodding comeback song. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that this is not wholly representative of Death Magnetic.

The production sounds a sterile too (based on the actual single and not the YouTube clip).

METALLICA Representative Addresses Complaints Over 'The Day' Sound Quality - Aug. 22, 2008

A representative for METALLICA's Mission: Metallica web site — the online experience related to the group's forthcoming album, "Death Magnetic" — has sent out an e-mail message to the site's registered members regarding the sound quality of the new METALLICA single, "The Day That Never Comes". According to one METALLICA fan, "there have been reports of loud distortion, as well as clipping in the song. At first it wasn't a big deal until the version being played on radio as well as the one on iTunes had the same problem. I, along with many others, wrote e-mails to Mission: Metallica as they have a history of providing great tech support. Well, they have responded and sent an e-mail to the fans who wrote them."

The Mission: Metallica e-mail reads as follows:

"METALLICA fans,

"My name is Benjamin. I work in fan support for Mission: Metallica.

"I am sorry for the bulk e-mail, but we've heard from quite a few of you regarding the sound quality on the single release of 'The Day That Never Comes'.

"The source of the problem, as you might imagine, goes all the way back to the creation of the track from master — but this is not how it will sound on the album.

"We've identified the source of the problem to prevent it in any subsequent singles released in advance of September 12.

"If we can have another one put together and sent out prior to that date, there may be a higher-quality release of 'The Day That Never Comes' made available, but I can't guarantee it at this time."

It should be noted that "The Day That Never Comes" is no longer being made available for streaming on METALLICA's official MySpace page, although it's not clear if this is related to the sound-quality issues described above.

METALLICA delivered "The Day That Never Comes" on Thursday (August 21) to radio stations nationwide. The song is taken from the band's upcoming album, "Death Magnetic", and clocks in at a hefty seven minutes and 56 seconds. Drummer Lars Ulrich told The Pulse of Radio that the rest of the tunes on the CD don't get much shorter than that. "This is not three-, four-minute little ditties. These are, pretty much all of them are, quote, 'epics.' Most of them are seven, eight minutes, I think there's one at six, you know, but it's that type of stuff. When I think of those (METALLICA) records from the '80s, I think of the songs being journeys that take you to all these different places and different musical landscapes and all that type of stuff, and this is kind of what these songs do."

"Death Magnetic" arrives in stores worldwide on September 12 in a variety of digital and physical configurations, ranging from a straight download to a deluxe "coffin box" edition.

METALLICA will play two shows in Europe to celebrate the CD's release, both of them with low ticket prices. The group will perform in Berlin on September 12 to open the new O2 arena there, with tickets going for $14. Next the quartet will head to London for a September 15 show at that city's O2 arena, with tickets costing around $9. Both shows are open to fan club members only. Proceeds from both gigs will go to local charities.

The band will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21 in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

It's completely and utterly stupid to complain about the sound quality of these songs since..uh...the actual album isn't out yet. Do people actually expect to hear a full high quality copy of any 'Tallica songs before the album is released? If so, I have some beach front property in Kansas I'd like to sell.

Cyanide is the better of the two new song leaks anyways. The Day That Never Comes has been reported as being the weakest of the new songs. And with that said, it's a whole heck of a lot better than anything that was on St. Anger.

No. I did not like the St Anger album. However, I did enjoy the DVD documenting how they made it. It is a great example for all bands to watch IMO. I will buy the record just to have it. I like to own all of the CDs of the bands that I like, good or bad.

The single is out though which makes your point moot. Also why release what is now being reported as the weakest track as a single? It smacks of knee jerk reactionary marketing to some of the negative responses received.

That being said I hope the album is good and Cyanide is the better song (based on a live soundboard recording and not the finished article).

I think it's a little long too. They should have released a radio edit version of this song or picked a different song.
