OT: Warming up to digital music

Postby Rip Rokken » Mon Aug 25, 2008 3:19 pm

I've not been excited about the digital music revolution at all, being a dude that loves CDs. I like to buy discs and get the artwork, booklet, etc., and have used MP3's just for the convenience occasionally, but not as my main method of buying music.

Well... I got an iPhone yesterday and was forced to finally deal with iTunes which I've avoided like the plague. But I have to say... once I figured my way around and saw how it worked with my phone, it freakin' rocks! I spent hours today Dokkenizing my iPhone, from adding my signature Rip Rokken smiley as the wallpaper, so adding/organizing Dokken tunes on the phone. The first bit was a nightmare, because I had several scattered and unorganized bonus and rare tracks that I now had to place into folders, rename, edit the properties for (artist, album, genre, comments, etc.), and then come up with album artwork where none was available directly thru the interface, then create playlists. But, man, did it pay off! SWEETNESS!!! I love the way it will pull up the artwork while a song plays, or it I tilt it landscape, it pulls up all the album covers that I can flip thru and select. I'm seriously going to dig this thing, and what a great tool for indokktrination! I can Dokk people up on the fly... haha!

I'm not making the leap completely to digital just yet -- still plan on sticking to CDs and transferring only what's needed, but I just made a huge leap today and am very happy for it. Now I just need to add some LSA ringtones!

you mean my iPhone was dokktored before yours? and I have inDokktrinated folks on the fly and you haven't?? I played LSA for the painter last week as he worked in the living room. he likes it!! 8)

gosh--even the ripster can't keep up with the Mimi. drink some coffee, man!! and try to catch up!!

p.s. i was not so much digital either until JSS' Essential Ballads was released to iTunes and I didn't want to want for the snail mail order. I bought it later to get the artwork and booklet. did ya know that you only have to buy one of the tracks off of any cd and you can download the artwork? I love that jukebox cover art feature.

Just to be pedantic, CD is digital. But I get what you mean :)
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Yep - I gotta have the tangible object, the insert, etc.

And what else are you going to get signed when you meet the band?

Esp since my computer gets possessed as it does almost every July.

Don't really trust the iTunes

Actually.... it kinda does look like that! I think I was checking out my virtual "package" to make sure they got it right... Good grief -- Rip Rokken taking a wizz on the Journey scarab... not exactly what I had in mind!

I hated the whole concept of iTunes, and literally put an iPod back on the shelf when I found from the salesperson that I couldn't drag/drop MP3's to it like a mass storage device, but had to use iTunes. I typically avoid proprietary stuff, but after working with this one, all I can say is the experience is TOPS! It's the coolest thing I've bought in a while, and in an age where technology is becoming more about marketing than ease of use, this one hits it right -- no bloat, and IMO not a single wasted function. I literally just picked it up and started using it because it was so intuitive -- hmm, "intuitive"... that's a concept! Wish the tech vendors would catch on...

Aside from the iPod features, it's the best phone I've ever had. I've always hated just about every cell phone I have, and spend more time "working with them" while driving than I should. This one is incredibly functional and allows me to do so much with simple finger swipes, that I've started guessing things and they just often work. Someone really put some practical thought into the iPhone... and it's the ONLY phone I've had that works flawlessly with my BlueTooth headset. The others typically would lose their paring, or get out of sync. Heck, my Samsung Blackjack worked well when it did, but then it would lose sync with the headset and act as if it was one when it wasn't, then would cut off the connection when I used it, like it reversed the relationship. That drove me nuts and usually took about 5 minutes of power recycles and tinkering to fix. I was just about to chunk this headset until I got the iPhone, and it works exactly as it should... always asks me where I want the audio to go so I can switch the signal back and forth between the headset and the phone... The Blackjack would often (but not consistently) ask if I wanted to send the audio to the headset if I turned the headset on after the phone, and then almost never would. I'm never going back... Now, if only Apple can resist the bug that bites tech vendors most often and not keep thinking "more is better" with each release. Many products these days are long past their best versions, and now are just boggy quagmires of useless features and confusing interfaces.

Yeah, I'm there sometimes, but I'm not very good at it. I keep flying into the ocean; I had to get one of my geek kids to come get me out the other day ... much eye rolling involved ...

On the hair, looks like you've gone too dark & too bushy

Welcome to the fantastic world of Iphone!
I love my Iphone. Howver, a piece of advice here,,,, if you get multiple updates for different applications, do NOT choose "UPDATE ALL".... update them one by one. If you choose update all , there is a big risk that it will lock your iphone and give you the infamous white circle of death.....
Trust me , I experienced that and it took me hours to get things restored back.

Thanks, and I discovered just yesterday that it's a myth that Apple devices never crash... mine froze up right in the middle of one of Don's screams, and it was repeating the same .5 second of the scream over and over for almost 2 minutes while I scrambled to figure out how to reboot the damn thing. But it was a good way to die! LOL!
