JSS - Itunes vs CDBaby

PostPosted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 10:24 pm

This is for all of you JSS fans in case you didn't know. If you purchase his new CD or downloads from CD Baby instead of Itunes, JSS gets about $11.80 per CD! Don't know what the Itunes deal for him is but CD Baby claims that the artist gets 91% of the selling price. Yeah, it cost more on CD Baby but JSS makes out better I think. :D

I should have bought it from CDBaby, then, but the downloads weren't available at the time I checked yesterday. iTunes let me burn a CD, but it apparently only copied M4A files to it, and didn't create an audio version that I could jam on in the car. I'm still extremely new to iTunes, but feel I'd be better off getting MP3's to start with. Either way, I want the artist to get as much as possible for their work, so I'll probably buy from CDBaby from now on and import into iTunes unless it's an iTunes only release.

The nice thing about MP3's is you don't have to convert. They play on all players including Ipods without conversion. That means no loss of quality! And no bullshit copy protection to screw with.

As far as CD Baby's selection -- well you are limited to independent artists who aren't so popular for the most part. Not the kind of selection available like Itunes or Amazon.

By the way, This CD is excellent! Great job JSS! :D

Good to know! That's where I bought Beautiful Mess last night. I've bought Eric Martin from them before too. Good to know the artist gets most of the $. :D

This is a fun cd too. http://cdbaby.com/cd/boogieknights

Completely agree there... I've avoided iPods in the past for that exact reason and stuck with players that I could just drag and drop files to, but the overall user experience I'm getting with my iPhone just can't be beat. I have a converter which goes between formats, so it's a little extra effort to get them in MP3, but overall, I'll probably be buying MP3s and importing them into iTunes.

The iTunes files aren't protected so you can actually convert them right in iTunes. If you want to know how, see the thread in the JSS forum.

Oops! I forgot to mention that the Itunes Plus files aren't copy protected. The regular Itunes files are. Still lose some quality when you convert though but most people won't notice.

"honey, let me do those dishes. I know it's been a long day for you"

"I love that blouse on you."

(try not to roll your eyes or fall asleep when she tells you what happened at WalMart in produce aisle)

it takes really really good quality pics, better than my sony camera. it's great for quick snaps. random stray puppies, cute shoes, etc.

I was looking for a group called Shoes who I had seen on MTV it's first month on the air. Finally found them about year ago on CDBaby. Once I knew that the Artist actually made more money by being on their site than With the big box Sites, I threw my business their way whenever I could. You won't find many big names with them as the major labels control that distribution but for less known acts, CDBaby is the place to check first.

Well, I'll be! I popped said CD back into my player this morning and found it HAD been converted to a standard audio disc! I guess I didn't notice the entire process, and thought it had only copied M4A files to it. Maybe it finalized it before I ejected it or something... It's going in my car deck today.

By the way, I have a DJ friend here locally that I'm going to check with about spinning a tune from the disc on our biggest POP/AOR station. I'm betting he'll do it!

Fuck yeah! Go for it. I've been spinning this disc thinking there are some tunes on here that could be getting some airplay on certain station formats. Very catchy shit from JSS if you ask me. :D

Hey, I've done it before, and also landed a radio interview for the band in question along with a spin of their new song. I think "Cry Me A River" is big-time single material, and will ask for that. If any of this goes against some master promotional plan, of course I'll stand down -- unless I hear otherwise, these first few weeks are a great time to strike...

Rip Rokken, JSS Street Team Leader!

It's hard to choose a song for airplay. "Hey" is a catchy tune and "Broken Man" would be a good choice as well.

LOL! Nah, just any small thing I can do to help move a few copies. I'm listening intensely to the disc today, and will pay extre special attention to those tunes. Still hadn't had a chance to really let it soak in, and that's on my plate for today. I'm loving it more and more with each listen!

I hope he moves a fair amount and makes some $$ for himself. He deserves it. He's not afraid to try any type of material. Sooner or later he's bound to find the right formula for big success!

Agreed, there is a few there that would be great for airplay. My daughter really likes a few of the songs too and she is 18, so it appeals to the younger generation too. :D This one won't be leaving the car stereo any time soon. :D

I wonder if TESTIFY should be the one to promote?? since it was the first release?? dunno.

i have always thought that Gin And Tonic Sky is a very AOR ish ballad. lots of folks could dig on it---groovey and mellow.

Our Song is very pop-y and anthem--ish. very radio friendly. and Eye also. it's got the smooth R&B feel that is happening right now.

I'm way out of the other side and think that MOUNTAIN or 21st Century, or Testify would make good as rockers.

Although major label interest would be ideal, doesn't necessarily mean it would be promoted correctly. Sometimes it's better not to go with a major label, especially in this day and age when labels are shutting down and changing staff left and right. Major labels don't afford artists with huge budgets nowadays, unless you are already a well established artist bringing in big bucks for the label. Just a sign of the times! The ideal situation would be to get enough momentum going on the album that it would spark major label interest and perhaps tie in with corporate product sponsorship.
