I believe the south does have a monopoly on racism. I was honestly ashamed, after living in NC for over a year, that it is actually part of the United States. I heard more racial, derogatory terms said in casual conversation in the time I lived there than I did in almost 40 years of living in New England. Quite sad, actually.
I don't think it's just NC. Get in the deep south, and it's probably just as bad. As far as NC goes, in certain locations, that doesn't surprise me a bit. Durham is a prime example. Everybody else seemed floored with the Duke lacross scandal--didn't seem to surprise anybody down here. Racial tensions in Durham are as bad as anywhere I have EVER been. Putting a very elite university like Duke right in the middle of what was a big cigarette/tobacco area at one time--and now very low income, crime and drug-ridden housing, is just asking for trouble. The UNC murder that made national news this spring is the same thing, and there are plenty more incidents that didn't get out of this area. Simply put, it's a mess.
Racial tensions have always been high down here (big stuff back in the 60s with the sitins), and adding a large Hispanic influx in the last 10-15 years certainly hasn't helped ease the situation. I don't see it going away anytime soon either. As I said though, it's much worse in some parts than others.

well, I can only hope the person lost their job. Simply unacceptable, no matter which way you look at it.
