OT: Has McCain Thrown in the Towel?

(CNN) -- The McCain campaign calls her a "tough executive who has demonstrated" readiness to be president. The Republican National Committee calls her a "conservative star with the talent, energy and family support necessary to carry out common sense policies."

John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate came as a surprise.

more photos » But the Obama campaign calls her a candidate with "the thinnest foreign policy experience in history" who is "currently under investigation in her own state." And one of the Senate's top Democrats, Charles Schumer, said that although she is "a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling."

What do we know about Sarah Palin, the 44-year-old first-ever female governor of Alaska, wife and mother of five, and now GOP vice presidential nominee?

On Friday, a new part of her identity dominated the political scene: game-game-changer.

She enters an already historic election, knowing well two of the biggest things McCain needs her to do: shore up votes among social conservatives and win over disaffected Hillary Clinton-supporting Democrats, many of them women.

Before catapulting Friday to the forefront of U.S. politics, Sarah Palin was, at points along her journey, a beauty queen, high school basketball star and TV sportscaster. More recently, she became known in Alaska as a popular maverick, staunchly conservative on key issues but vocal about problems she saw, including those in her own party.

She got the nickname "Sarah Barracuda" for her fierce competitiveness on the basketball court in high school. Some of her opponents revived the name after she became mayor of her hometown, Wasilla, in 1996, kicking out a three-term incumbent and butting heads with some city department heads who remained loyal to her predecessor, according to the Almanac of American Politics.

In 2003 and 2004, she chaired the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska's oil and gas resources.

Widely seen as a political outsider who stayed at arm's length from her party establishment, she defeated two political insiders in 2006 to become the youngest, and first female, governor in the state's history.

As governor, she won praise for backing tough ethical standards for politicians. During the first legislative session after her election, her administration passed a state ethics law overhaul.

But her term was not without controversy. A legislative investigation is looking into allegations that Palin fired Alaska's public safety commissioner because he refused to fire the governor's former brother-in-law, a state trooper. She denied wrongdoing.

An outspoken anti-abortion Republican, Palin has spoken out about her fifth child, who was diagnosed in utero with Down syndrome.

"We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives," the Republican National Committee quoted her as saying. "We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."

She is married to her high-school sweetheart, a commercial fisherman. The two eloped in 1988, to save money on a big wedding, a year after she graduated from the University of Idaho, where she studied journalism and political science, according to the Almanac of American Politics.

Palin is an avid hunter and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

As millions of Americans began searching for information on her Friday, her official Web site as governor wasn't the only one getting flooded with traffic. Traffic also spiked at sites showcasing pictures from 1984, when she wore the crown of Miss Wasilla and competed in the Miss Alaska contest.

She was born in Idaho, and her parents moved to Alaska when she was 3 months old.

Some similarities between Palin and McCain were clear Friday: Both have been termed mavericks, and both have taken on the GOP establishment at times. McCain has a son who has served in Iraq; Palin has one heading there soon. So does her vice presidential opponent, Sen. Joe Biden.

For all that is known about her, Palin now becomes the most prominent unknown quantity in the presidential race. Her lack of experience on national political issues, including foreign policy and homeland security, and her only brief experience as governor open clear lines of attack for the Obama campaign. Watch Democrats respond to the Palin pick »

Then again, McCain's surprising announcement Friday and the intense focus it drew threatened to slow Obama's post-convention momentum in a dramatic way.

No stranger to being a first in Alaska, Palin now faces being a first on a national level: the first female No. 2 on the GOP presidential ticket and only the second female on a major party ticket, after Democrat Geraldine Ferraro more than 20 years ago.

Schumer described McCain's choice as a "Hail Mary pass." Whether that's true has yet to be seen.

But what's not in question is that in entering the race, Sarah Palin changes the game.

Is this McCain's way of surrendering the election? Last night McCain ran an ad congratulating Obama on his great debut at the DNC convention in Denver. Then you wake up today to this. This definitely reeks of someone throwing in the towel.

I always thought of McCain as a closet liberal. Are his true colors already showing through? Did he toss the election to Obama on purpose? He sure had a weird fucking look in his eye in that congratulations commercial last night.

It's either that or McCain has just gone off the deep end to try to steal the spotlight from Obama. That has to have frustrated the fuck out of him with Obama getting all the media attention and him getting none. He probably just fucking snapped under the pressure of it all and said fuck it, I'll just hire this unknown governor from Alaska and ruin any chance I had to get elected.

Ahaaa... I found out why McCain hired her...

GILF Update: Gov. Sarah Palin As Miss WasillaWay back in 1984 — the Van Halen reality, not the George Orwell novel — Alaska’s new governor Sarah Palin was an Alaskan beauty queen. She would’ve been 18 or 19 at the time.

Image

The only problem with this great tale is that it appears she was in college in Idaho at the time. Meaning, it’s obviously true. Topless Alaskan beauty queens … hooray for America. Wonkette operative “PN” says this is her portrait from those Golden Years. We say she’s still the best-looking politician in America … and remember, she’s a Maverick!

What a hotty! Put it back in your pants McCain, you dirty old man!!!

McCain has some serious problems. The guy attacked Obama for "having zero foreign policy experience" and "only being the mayor of a town of 9000". He then brings a woman on the ticket with zero foreign policy experience who was the mayor of a town of 6000 and is barely through half her term as governor! Obama's campaign is going to have a field day turning these tables!

She is the only one of the 4 with ANY executive experience. She's more qualified than Obama and all his "present" votes in the Senate.

She's a governor of a geographically large state with international borders (land with Canada, sea with Russia). I think both her parents worked in elementary schools...her husband is a union man.
since a governer is a CEO that actually leads/manages people, deals with a budget, commands the state national guard, etc. - it sounds like she actually has more managerial experience than the combined democratic ticket. unless you believe that obama's community organizer experience is weightier? or maybe biden's senate floor speeches?
carter was governer of georgia, clinton of arkansas...maybe you are really hung up on her because she is a woman? [edit- a hot woman]

Obama already admitted and made it clear executive decisions are "above his paygrade." It's the only factual and accurate thing he's said so far. Voting "present" in the senate is more his speed.

I'm not with ya'll on this- I think it was a pretty shrewd move on McCain's part. What's the news been about today? Barrack's speechifying, OR... McCain showing a bit of his old maverick spirt by picking this lady? It's totally stolen the headlines...and what's more, now BOTH SIDES can lay claim to the "historic nature" of their campaigns. And, after the safe, boring pick of Joe Biden, this makes McCain look , to some, like the real advocate for change. (Not suggesting I buy that...just talking about perception. And we ALL know how important perception is!)
The worst part to me is the experience issue, as that was McCain's trump card against Obama, and that's pretty much gone out the window. But I find it TREMENDOUSLY disingenuious of Obama or his follower to accuse anyone of not having "enough experience". Pot...meet Mr Kettle.

And truly...NO ONE votes for the friggin VP anyway.

I say score one for Johnny (especially after Obama spent 45 minutes in his big spotlight dance last night and told us absolutely nothing new! What a missed opportunity...)

I can assure you that I have ZERO issue with her being a woman. Believe it or not, I actually married a woman, and kind of dig them  I wasn't making an argument for her experience one way or the other. Like most Americans, I know absolutely nothing about the woman. I was simply saying that a lack of experience has been McCain's theme, throughout this campaign, and one could argue that having served as governor of Alaska for less than 2 years doesn't give her a wealth of experience. Carter (who was a complete buffoon of a president) at least served a full term as governor of Georgia, and Clinton was the governor of Arkansas forever!

Let's see if the Obama campaign raises the fact that Palin tried (unsuccessfully) to get her former brother-in-law fired as an Alaska State Trooper. Rumor has it that she simply had it in for the guy for divorcing her sister. I hope for her sake that there is no truth to that story!

I'd be pretty shocked if the McCain campaign didn't already know about this. I have a feeling it's not nearly as scandalous as the Dems hope it is.

There is zero chance that McCain's people didn't know about this. It's probably absolutely nothing, but politics is a VERY dirty game played by VERY dirty people, so I wouldn't be stunned if the issue were to be raised. Here is a link to the story...

Oh, cut the crap. You guys are getting voyeuristic with this.

I mean, McCain - a man I deeply admire and campaigned for in South Carolina in 2000 - IS worth billions of dollars thanks to his wife, DOES own eight or nine houses...Obama is born into poverty, to a single mother, gets an academic scholarship to college and law school, TURNS DOWN dozens of high paying Wall Street jobs to serve the people...and HE is the elitist? That is absurd. It doesn't even qualify as "opinion". It's just bullshit.

What it comes down to is that a lot of Republicans - are racists. I don't believe you are, RWF, but there are some posters here who clearly are.

Polls have shown that a majority of the women who were going to vote for Hillary were, in fact, already conservatives, and were voting for Hillary simply because she was a woman. There aren't a whole lot of Democratic-leaning women stupid enough to throw away all their ideals (a la the Puma's) out of spite and vote for a ticket that stands in complete contrast to everything in which they believe.

Thankfully, women are much smarter than men, and have the ability to see the forest from the trees.

Pardon me, I vote for whomever I feel is right for the job. I could care less what color his skin is. Not all Republicans are racists. I live in Arkansas, and I can show you some dye in the wool Democrats with memberships to the KKK. Matter of fact a lot of KKK are dye in the wool Democrats. That doesn't make most Democrats or Republicans racists. That means there are racists out there period. They come in all colors, nationalities, and walks of life.

That's a lame excuse. Racists are predominantly Republicans. They just take different forms. Pat Buchanan, for instance...do you recall his staunchly anti-immigrant platform back in the 90's? It wasn't just about closing the Mexican border...he wanted all the borders shut down...you know, including Italians, Japenese, et cetera.

The weird thing was, while he was chortling on and on about the "immigrant problem," he failed to mention that his parents were first-generation Scotch-Irish. That kind of shit.

Racists come in all shapes and sizes my friend. I have traveled a great deal in my life. You have no proof of that, just a blanketed oppinion that has no substancial basis. Nameing some does not blanket the whole. As I said, they come in all walks of life. Get every Republican and prove it. Now would you like me to say the same about the Democrats, because I know quite a few that hate people of other races? No, I wouldn't because that is not a fair statement. Don't generalize that is what I am saying. I was a Republican, and I hate no one because of differences in something so stupid as pigmentation. That is like a red rose hating a yellow rose! We are one race........human.
