My Take on Minneapolis - Pictures and Video from Sept 16!

I just got back home after the 7 hour drive from Minneapolis to Bismarck and I can tell you that the show was well worth the long trip. It was kind of a last minute trip but I'm glad I was able to make it to see this great tour! I took my Aunt to the show and we both had a great time, and even got to meet some other die-hard Journey fans who had seen the band over 15 times. I asked them if they ever visit MelodicRock and they said no, but I told them to check us out. There were also a lot of younger fans like myself in the audience, one guy about my age kept trying to come down the center aisle and stand by the front row gate but he was told to go back. It's too bad that everyone can't have a front row seat.

Arnel's voice was in top shape and the rest of the band was playing like they were in their prime. Neal was the incredible guitarist that he always is, and Ross had some great facial expressions to share with the crowd. I was seated in the 5th row facing directly at Ross and it seemed that he was always making faces or gestures to us. The lighting was a bit dark and made photography a bit of a challenge, but I did manage to get plenty of nice shots. Here's the band taking their bow:

Arnel was incredibly energetic and he worked the crowd very well, I think that all of us in the first few rows got some good eye contact and the front row got plenty of handshakes. It seemed like Jon was out on guitar a lot more than he used to be, or that could just be my imagination. The whole band seemed like they were just having the greatest time on stage, which is really what counts.

Cheap Trick's opening set involved some political remarks from the guitarist Rick Nielsen. He didn't have any nice things to say about the GOP convention that took place in the area a few weeks ago. They didn't go just too far but they should just keep politics out of it altogether - it's Journey's night, and I don't think the audience wants to hear the political opinions of Cheap Trick's guitarist. CT sounded pretty good, though.

The band had a very good sound mix and although the Target Center isn't a great sounding venue the band did shine through with their audio quality. Cheap Trick's opening set ran a bit long (lasted a full hour), but Journey's set was unfortunately much shorter than I was expecting. In the other Minneapolis thread it was discussed that the band was normally playing a for 1 hour and 45 minutes, but without Heart on the bill they were extending the set to a full 2 hours. The show last night only lasted 1 hour and 30 minutes, beginning promptly at 9:30 and ending at 11:00. That meant that I didn't get to hear Mother, Father, Wildest Dream, or Chain Reaction, but they did throw in Feeling That Way/Anytime and another track from that era that I can't recall the title of.

I recorded "Never Walk Away", here is the link:

The audio is very distorted but the video footage is pretty good.

Thanks! Yeah, I called in advance and was told that non-professional cameras would be allowed.

I was thinking the same thing about him - you can hardly see his face on my pictures because of the hat's shadows. Is the guy bald or what? :P

I agree brywool.
No part of Cheap Trick says country bad ass to me.
Gives me giggles seeing them pics though so I guess it's all good.

Awesome pics. Glad you enjoyed the show. It's my turn to see them this Friday at White River in Seattle. Hoping I'll turn my friend to a Journey fan after the show. Will definitely post my review and concert pics after.

Glad you guys like the pictures! They got like 4,000 views in one day so I think that says a lot about the interest for the band out there!

Neal was right. Arnel is the real deal. I was skeptical as to whether he could handle that catalog throughout the tour, but he's damn sure done it. He sounds as good now as ever, especially in these last few shows. I'm completely impressed. What a great showman. I'm glad he decided to take the job. He's brought this band back to what it should have always been.

My hat is off to Arnel, he's an amazing talent.

Audio is poor, but if you view in high quality the video is quite clear.

RICK STATED: "Arnel owns the frontman roll now. He's every naysayers fucking nightmare.

Neal and Jon will never let Arnel go. He is "EVERY NAYSAYER'S NIGHTMARE," you're right. They would not be able to replace him. Plus, his personality works with them. They're too set in their ways at this point in the band to have someone come in wanting to establish too big a part in the say-so of things. As time goes on and he starts burning out I believe they will do what it takes to make him happy and keep the show rolling. Just watch. My prediction. 8)
