Arnel on the "Greatest Singers Of All-Time"

In the shoutbox on his official site the topic turned to the greatest singers of all-time and he threw out a few names. Granted, these are off of the top of his head so let's not crucify the guy if you think he omitted someone. Interesting list:

Robert Plant
Steve Perry
Bono
Dio
Whitney Houston
Karen Carpenter
Ann Wilson
Robin Zander

Of the 8 people he mentioned I think only Perry, Houston and Wilson had truly "special" voices. Dio remains an unbelievable singer and Zander is still incredibly strong live. I've never cared for Plant or Bono, and honestly don't know enough about Karen Carpenter to comment. However, Tito and I were at a party this weekend with some people from Arnel's official board and they sang a few karaoke Carpenter's songs and I really liked them. Might have to check out their/her catalog a bit closer.

Bono is an unbelievable songwriter, and has written more stuff on the back of napkins that never made it to the studio than Whitney has quality songs in 25 years.

He's a good songwriter but average singer, in my opinion.

Karen Carpenter had a pleasant voice, never going out of her range or trying to impress with vocal acrobatics.

You know, I used to diss the Carpenters all the time. They were THE WHITEST BAND ever (them and the captain and tenille) but Karen had one of THE purest voices I ever heard in pop music. I never liked what they did to the Beatles stuff, and her brother was just major C R E E P Y dude, but Karen's voice, man, talk about pure.

Not sure if there are any Jellyfish fans here, but listen to Roger Joseph Manning Jr's solo album- The Land of Pure Imagination/Solid State Warrior.

He's the only GUY I've ever heard with that kind of purity and his voice is like a guy Karen Carpenter. Something to envy for singers.

You can hear him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4mNgiLJ7ls

As for ROCK Chicks- It's ALWAYS been Ann. Never Benatar, Slick, Joplin, and especially Nicks. They SUCK compared to Ann.
Ann is the consumate woman ROCK vocalist.

Zander is just cool. Great screamer voice.

Eh...He's got some kind of annoying quality in his voice that I don't like.

Agreed, though I do like Benatar.

I believe Arnel chose Karen Carpenter because those are his memories of his mother having him sing when he was a little boy. His brother, who wrote the bio of Arnel, on his website mentioned Karen Carpenter as a song he remembered him singing at school. So I think her voice is near and dear to him. Elton John is one of the top voices to me. I've seen him alone and with Billy Joel. But his solo concert I went to we had beyond awful seats. He just sat at his piano, never left it, and his voice was pure magic. It was so clear it felt like he was sitting in front of me singing only to me. I've always said just from a vocal standpoint alone, nothing else, it was one of my favorite concerts.

I always considered The Carpenters just a brother & sister act, with some backup musicians nobody knows. They were big for a few years in the late '70s (probably before your time, SJ). They had some hit songs and appeared on TV variety shows, which propeled their name recognition, similar to the path taken by The Captain & Tennille in later years.

Come to think of it, they are very similar. Easy listening songs .... female singer w/ distinctive voice... male keyboard/piano player who is the key writer/arranger of their music.

It was a shock to hear that Karen died so young. I guess she suffered from anorexia. By that time, their career was fizzling out .... always wondered if she maybe was depressed over that, too.

As far as ROCK vocalists go, I would definitely add Paul Rodgers to that list.

I wouldn't. He's great, but there's nothing in his body work that makes people go "wow."

He's not an ultra high tenor, but Paul most certainly has that emotion and soul in his voice. Some of that early BadCo stuff still gives me the chills.

Karen had perfect pitch. Their label was A&M Records - Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss - Alpert and Moss used to go crazy over her voice - most songs were done in one take.

I don't post here much anymore, but I had to log on to say that Karen Carpenter rivaled Steve Perry in his prime for pure, effortless, and amazing sound in her voice. She also sounded the same live as on her albums - just like Steve :D .

Like her music or not, the chick was born to sing.

Here's a favorite of mine:

Happened to come across this YT clip:

(Aight...Diction, diction... )

The description says:

Added: April 17, 2008

Claire Dela Fuente sings with Richard Carpenter. This song was recorded in the US, musical arrangements by Richard Carpenter, written by Pamela Phillips-Oland.

Curiosity led me to this:
http://www.asianjournal.com/?c=108&a=26835

March 25th, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Claire de la Fuente, whose latest CD Something in Your Eyes, hit the music store shelves recently, is in town promoting that CD and an upcoming concert with Richard Carpenter, the surviving member of the 1970s duo, The Carpenters.

...Claire first met Richard in December, and she invited him to visit the Philippines and get to know the country that continues to love him and Karen. During their December meeting, Richard had listened to some of Claire’s Karen Carpenter recordings, and he was very impressed with Claire’s and Karen’s voice range similarities.

That range is from B Minor to C, according to Claire.

“Our best range is from B to B flat, and the highest note that we can tackle is C,” Claire recalls. “We cannot really sing ordinary songs because our voice range fall in-between voice sounds,” Claire said.

Claire’s first meeting with Richard was made possible by lyricist Pamela Phillips Olan, a friend of Claire and Richard. Olan informed Richard that Claire was planning to launch a comeback career and that she would be honored if Richard could include one of his songs in Claire’s comeback CD. Richard had agreed, and Something in Your Eyes, was included and was adopted as the title of the compilation.

Richard visited the Philippines again in February to help Claire promote the “Something in Your Eyes” CD...

“At one time, while we were in Boracay,” I brought up the subject of Karen, and I witnessed a gleam in his eyes,” Claire relates. “He talked about Karen a lot; how sometimes, she made him nervous, because like me, she was one of the boys,” Claire recalls. “When Richard listened to my recordings, he was really touched,” she said. “I was surprised that his reaction to my (Karen Carpenter) songs was something that I never would have imagined. A musical genius liked my renditions, and that was really amazing,” Claire recalls.

Olde Bobby Plant for the first part of the 70s was sublime..Robin Zander still is!

Chris Thompson of Manfred Mann's Earth Band has a superb voice.

Stevie Lange is an amazing singer...the Wilson lass as well it must be said.

Here's a link to Stevie's website...have a listen to "Remember My Name".

Awesome.

Paul Rogers is GREAT from all right now to bad company to feel like making love to
doing the queen stuff.. and Freddie Mercury should be at the TOP of the ROCK list...
DAMN that guy was pure magic.. Just like Perry was.

Arnel top singer... no way no how not yet.... give him 10 years... then we will see. He has
only had a year under his belt in PRIME TIME.

add stevie nicks to the list.
