I know you are all going to jump me when I voice my opinion but here goes. Hubby and I went to the show at St. Louis and were so excited to hear Arnel sing after all the great things we had been hearing about him. When he started to sing we just looked at each other and shook our heads. We were not impressed at all. I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but in my opinion he is not the right fit for Journey and his singing leaves a lot to be desired. They tried to drown him out by making the music so loud it almost burst our ear drums. JSS was the man for the job. I don't know what happened there but they messed up when he left or was told to leave Journey. I won't be going to any more of their concerts. I'll content myself to listen to my cd's when Steve Perry was the lead singer. Okay, go ahead and curse, insult, and try to shame me. Just my opinion as I said.

I dont agree that he was a wrong choice but I do think that the tour is wearing him down and his voice is showing signs of fatigue.. In some of the clips I have seen he is flat all over the place and I am sure that they are going to be forced to drop a half step no matter how much they dont want too. They blow out Arnel and they are done... No one in their right mind is going through this soap opera again... As a fan that is..

The clips I've heard from the St. Louis show have been pretty good.

I disagree, and I was at the show! Yes the music was a bit loud, but it is a rock concert not the Boston Pops! LOL! Earplugs might help you next time! As far as cursing you for your oppinion, I am not one to curse anyone, it is as you say your oppinion. I come from the same show with a totally different take.

It's hard to say why some people don't like Journey with Arnel, but there are a few. I read the reviews of the St. Louis show you attended, and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Maybe you just had bad seats, or maybe subconsciously you just wanted JSS there. I can respect that.

I agree that JSS would have been killer fronting Journey, but Neal and Jon wanted the old sound. I think Neal especially wanted the band to be back like it was in the early '80's. I'm sure they had the best times in their lives through those years. I think they made the right choice with Arnel though. He sings the catalog very well and puts on one hell of a show.

Saw for myself in Seattle, so I KNOW how good the guy is. Many people can't get over the fact that he's Asian. Many can't get over the fact that he's not Mr. HunkyDude. Many can't get over the fact that he's not Jss, Steve Augeri, or Steve Perry. Many won't listen with an open mind or open eyes because of those factors. Their prejudice is their loss. (not all prejudices are ethnic-based folks... "prejudice- to pre-judge").

The fact is that when I saw them on the 19th, Arnel OWNED each and ever song he sang. Some of them were GASP! MUCH BETTER than Perry's live versions, some of them rivaled his studio versions. Not all, but some. Personally, and this is on vocal ability ALONE (Not writing ability, not looks or any of that other BS that SOME female fans get so hung up on that their ears seem to quit working) I think that Arnel is AS GOOD [Revised that to NEARLY as good] as Perry was on the Escape Tour. I think he's missing a touch of the bottom end Perry had in his voice, but everything else seems to be there in spades. I think the two singers are pretty freakin' comparable which is amazing that TWO rock voices like that can exist on ONE planet.

I don't have the tour sheet in front of me, but I know Arnel was sick a few weeks ago. Not sure when SL was.
I have YET to read a bad review from this tour and I have read as many as I can get my hands on, because the "Arnel Saga" (Rocky 11) is very interesting to me. But I DO see that many folks (largely female) seem to have an agenda, and I guess they think they'll get Perry back in the band by intentionally turning off their ears (ain't gonna happen folks!) and keep singing the praises of Perry and not enjoy what is now a vital, WORKING band.

Maybe this isn't YOUR slant, but it kind of seems like it from the tone of your post. Too bad, it's great stuff and they are kicking America's ASS right now. Awesome! Cool to see someone's dream coming true right before our eyes. Don't get much cooler stories than that.

Not gonna blast this person for their post, as it was their opinion, and they are entitled. However, I was at the St. Louis show and the KC show. Arnel sounded great at BOTH. He had his moments, as would any singer, but overall everyone that went with me agreed that he sounded fantastic, and pretty much stole the show.

Again, they are entitled to their opinions, but I also think it's interesting that they threw in that JSS was the right person on top of the critique. Kinda lost some of the point there.

Music is subjective. You either like it or you don't. If you like it, good for you. That means you are happier hearing the music. If you don't like it, then too bad, you miss out on the chance of being happier.

The original poster is entitled to his/her opinions and he/she has all the right to not like the singer. I do think the person may have missed out on the chance of liking the singer due to a subconscious want for JSS even before Arnel started singing.

Well, I'm a female and I think Arnel is very, very cute. He actually really has a nice face, beautiful profile, great hair, great smile, great stage presence. With that voice, it works for me.

Not sure which ones. Just random clips. Some stuff he smokes and some stuff he is below the note or sounds like on the edge of cracking... I just wish they would drop a half step... The stuff will sound fine.

Singing Journey music in the key that Steve Perry sang it in was a one-time freak of nature. Voices are simply not built for that. Arnel's voice will only last so long. Just like Perry and Augeri, time will take its toll. All it takes is one bad bout with bronchitis. Then you sing Perry-Journey on top of that several times a week and it's like gargling with glass fragments.

Why do you think Perry's not still singing it?

I for one no1uknow appreciates your willingness to be honest. I saw them in Charlotte and felt the same way on some songs, others he nailed so you have a right and are entitled to your opinion.

Well there's your problem. JSS's voice is SO distinct, that if you really feel he is the man for the "job" hell, no other singer could match up, including Perry in his prime, JSS's voice doesn't sound like anyone else. So if you're stuck on JSS's voice, style of singing, no one could replace that "sound". But if you're think Journey sounds better with a softer more tenor voice, then it's hard to deny Arnel the job.
