Can Someone tell me WHY Minnesota and Chicago are playing a one-game playoff when Minnesota won the season series 11 to 7?

Enquiring minds want to know....at least THIS one does.....

I hate the fucking White Sox as much as Osama Bin Laden, but I think baseball's got it right. If you have the same record after that many games you should settle it on the field. One game for all the marbles. Love it...go Twins!!!

Football doesn't have the time for a one game playoff...baseball does.

If the NFL played 165 regular season games, there'd be no post-season.
Baseball blows...

baseball is made to perfection here with the one game playoff situation. play 162 games... tied record... who wants to lose to tie breakers that way... NFL should learn from this but it would take one more week of playoffs...
foot ball with 16 weeks harder to do.

Not me! The CTA does a fair enough job of pissing me off with the construction zones they randomly put up. A cross town series would all but obliterate the red line, not to mention make the Jackson transfer to the blue impossible once drunk fans destroy it.

I would, however, love to see the Cubbies make the series this year. 8)

What's so confusing about it? They both have the same record, hence the one game playoff! It's the way it's been in baseball, since the world was flat! This isn't the NFL!

Both options (season series vs one-game playoff) make sense. However, a one-game playoff means more advertising dollars and more tickets sold. Plus, baseball is just more traditional than other sports.

It's because of the new Coin Toss rule... It's completely fucking stupid, but they decided on this a while back.... Without much common sense present I guess...

The one game playoff has absolutely NOTHING to do with any "new Coin Toss rule". It is something that has always been in effect in baseball. If two teams finish with the same record, they have a one-game playoff, regardless of what their head to head record was, during the season! Believe me...I've lived it! Back in 1978, the Red Sox had an 11 game lead in September and the Yankees somehow caught them, to tie them. There was a one-game playoff, and Bucky "bleeping" Dent hit the home run to win it for the Yankees. The Yankees moved on to the playoffs, and the Red Sox moved on to the golf course!

Someone ship that mofo some CUBS BLUE. Screw it,I'll do it. Someone give me his address.
(well hell, I tried.)
And lets get Fukodome leading the Perryoke Party at the bar like the Sox did.
Apparently, that works.

That's because you don't live here.
You're safe from the complete and utter mayhem a crosstown series would cause.

Yep, the coin toss is just to determine who gets the home field advantage. They do a bunch of them for every possible scenario.

Um...okay. I've been watching baseball since 1975, so I'm well aware that the coin toss is to determine home field advantage, if a one-game playoff becomes a necessity! If you read T-Bone's post, it sounded (to me) as if he was suggesting the coin toss determined that there even be a one game playoff! Nowhere in his post did I read anything about the coin toss determining home field advantage.

Two, actually.

And I just heard that this is the first postseason with both Chicago teams since 1906.

I'm a Cardinals fan, by the way...so I couldn't care less. But my campus is currently rioting and will have battle lines drawn if the Cubs play the Sox in the Series. Brawls might break out on the way to class.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan, it's difficult not to pull for the pathetic Cubs! Every team deserves to win it once, every 100 years
