Schon v. Cain v. Perry Solo Material

Who do you think had the best solo material of the three? Obviously, Perry had the most commerical success but I'm talking about just the quality of the work. Yes, Deb rules apply - sales are irrelevant just looking at the quality. :P :P :P Not talking about side projects either i.e. Bad English, Hardline, HSAS, Soul Sirkus, or Babys. Just solo material. I guess I can let the Schon & Hammer stuff fly but try to minimize it. What is everybody's opinion?

If he wins, it's only on the strength of Street Talk. FTOLSM is mediocre at best and Against The Wall (songs off of GH+5) blew. I'm still thinking about my answer. All 3 could win in my book.

In terms of creativity, writing and performance, I'd give it Schon. Perry's stuff all sounded the same, and was never far off from the Journey sound. Cain's stuff is inconsistent. Schon's body of work shows a true maturity as a musician.

Schon by far.

Street Talk is the best out of the bunch. Steve got some good songwriters in to help on that.
And also "Don't fight it". More a Kenny Loggins single but Steve helped write most of it and it's a great collaberation between him, Kenny and Pat Benatar's hubby Neil Giraldo.

I do not completely count Street Talk as solo material because he had Herbie Herbert holding his hand along the way and Herbie started Journey. Thus, there's a huge connection. Completely absent of Journey Perry made 2 records. One flopped and the other was so bad the label refused to release it.

I was going to say that Schon and Cain edge out Perry for their work in Bad English, but Schon is getting docked a bunch of points for the audio ass-raping known ass Soul Sirkus. The winner in Jon Cain, with Perry in second and Neal bringing up the rear. :P

Reread the rules: Bad English and Soul Sirkus do NOT count.

Then Schon wins. His solo work has some real masterpieces in the collection.

PS I like my rules better.

In my opinion, none of the three are particularily brilliant on their own. All of them sound great in Journey, and all of them sound good in their side projects, e.g Bad English. Perry best by a little bit because there are a some good tracks on Street Talk.

Neal Schon all the way. And usually I would go for a vocal album first. But FTLOSM boring. Street Talk had some great songs, but some just okay. But Neal's body of work, definitely. Goes to show you, though, how much better their music was together. Schon gave Perry and Cain an edge.

I liked all of them, sorry I guess this is really up to a persons likes or dislikes.

The ironic thing is that I'm a piano/keys guys, so the fact I put Schon above Cain surprises me as well. But his releases speak for themselves. It also surprises me how much I've come to dislike the Perry solo stuff as I've gotten older. Not sure why, cause the older Journey music has grown on me more during that time.

I give the win to Neal. I like musicianship to be on display. I enjoy listening to quality instrumentals. The Frigs work would be cool if he forgot about trying vocals and just concentrated on his key playing. As for SP, Street talk had a handful of cool tunes on it. As mentioned, these sound like Journey tunes. I think I liked about two songs on FTLOSM. The rest of the record is a complete snooze fest IMO. Never was interested in his Greatest +3 or whatever it was.

Neal by a long shot, but if Cain released some well crafted instrumentals it might be closer.

LOL! Too bad. :P This is one time you can't throw your stats/#s around like confetti.

I don't even think I need to answer this one. Most of my musical enjoyment comes from the vocals, so definitely Perry. As great a guitar player as Neal is, it's all about the pipes for me.

I haven't officially decided but I peeked at the results so far and as typical Cain gets 0 respect. No votes. I hope this doesn't sway my decision. One of the reason I didn't want to do a poll.

Okay...you are officially STONED! Perry versus Schon, versus Cain solo material??? You're kidding, right? There isn't a person outside of this board who even knows that Cain and Schon had "solo" material, and their ears are in a far better place, because of it! Schon and Cain can't fucking sing, period! Go put this poll up on Jackass Talk. They used to love this shit. Although, now that I think about it, the mention of Perry's name might be grounds to get to banned for life

It's fine just here. Neal and Jon don't have to sing. But they both have decent voices.

If by "decent", you mean one notch above Edith Bunker from All In The Family, then I will agree with you
