Car GPS blamed for NY train accident again

Postby Suzanne » Sat Oct 04, 2008 4:50 am

Um, the GPS is being blamed???

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. (AP) - For the second time this year, a GPS has been blamed for a car-train collision in suburban Bedford Hills, N.Y.

No one was injured.

Jose Silva of White Plains told police that "he did what he was told" by his global positioning system.

Metro-North railroad spokeswoman Marjorie Anders says Silva turned right as he crossed the tracks around 8 p.m. Monday. He got stuck and abandoned the car before it was hit.

The same thing happened on January 2nd. That driver jumped out, frantically waved to the engineer, and got out of the way just before the train slammed into the car at 60 mph.

The tracks are parallel to the Saw Mill River Parkway.

I don't know all the details so this might be unfair to the man... but this could be a classic example of a machine overriding common sense.

sounds to me like Darwinism in action. One day, people might learn that when you have multi-million pounds of steel moving at 60mph--it CANNOT stop! Until then, population control, I guess...

That's insane! Thank God no one was killed. We just had a horrific train crash here a few weeks ago...the reason: the engineer of the commuter train was texting on his phone not paying attention to the red warning lights, etc. that showed a freight train was on the same track heading for them! 26 people were killed. Extremely stupid & irresponsible on the engineer's part and so very sad for the victims.

true story here...

about ten or fifteen years ago i was on a side street and was knocked into a busy street by an elderly person.next i was then sitting in my delivery truck trapped when another car which was a good half a minute or so away suddenly appeared to be coming closer and closer at a high rate of speed toward me and did not stop, slow down or attempt to go around me as i was pinned inside my vehicle then smashed into the side of me which was the second impact i absorbed nearly half a minute after the first by the elderly person.i later asked the second person why they didn't just go around me or at least slow down to minimize impact.her reply was this...the speed limit says 45 MPH.i said yes but if you feel the need to slow down under certain circumstances that would be alright to do so.gosh the stupidity.

Let's see... you're getting ready to cross the railroad tracks and you see a train coming... the lady on the GPS says, "Please proceed on the highlighted route"... so what do you do? It's a no-brainer. You obey her and drive over the tracks, right?

DOH!!!
