So I was driving to school today, and I stopped at a stop light, and right when I look into my rear view mirror.Bang. I saw it coming and I couldn't move out of the way, and my body jolted forward of course. A truck rear ended me. We get out and look at the cars, i have a ford focus, and really there is no damage just some scratches, and its a little loose. We exchanged our info and such. He said I had the option to call the cops or just figure it out through insurance. I called the cops just to get a police report to cover my butt and such. The cop gave me the choice of going through insurance or just take 3 estimates from 3 automechanics to figure out the price. I've been wondering what I should do and if getting the cops involved was the right thing to do. Since there really isn't too much damage. BTW it was my first accident so I was really shaken up. What do you think?

The cop said this? Where do you live, Mayberry? Call the insurance company. If they don't hear from you within a few days but hear from the other guys carrier, you're going to have a problem

You did the right thing. The other person could have sued you, and this could have backfired badly. I have seen it happen.

Immediately go to the emergency room complaining desperately of lower and high back pain, neck soreness, and frontal cavity pain. Get those meds!

After an hour or two of Vicodin ES, the bumper will seem rather a non issue.

haha no that is pretty much a generalization of what he said, when he experienced minor accidents.
I actually live in NJ go figure, but the accident happen on a highway or an exit. I was driving to my college and yeh... you know the rest

This is such a crock. I rear-ended a guy on Jan 25th of this year....he was an immigrant who slammed on his breaks 5 feet beyond an intersection. And the light was STILL green. He had TWO LIGHT scratches on his 1992 Tercel....got a bill a month ago for $1400!

I did hit him, but I could not have avoided him with what he did. a GREEN LIGHT people. Makes you wonder.

I know where you're coming from, but sadly, legally, it's true though. In fact, there are schemes played out daily, where a couple of cars, in tandem, enter the highway. One gets in front of a usually high class car, and for whatever reason, stops suddenly, and high class dude rams him. Other following douchbag partner "witnesses" it, leading to big time settlement, of which they of course split. Many times, the rich dude, will just pay out of pocket. Sick eh?

There is a scam called "Swoop and Scoop". Sounds like what happened to you. They get in front of people, and hit the brakes. They take advantage of the law of hitting from behind. It is so hard to prove! I feel your pain!

Got rear-ended 3 years ago (similar incident at a stop light)...No tickets issued and it was written as no fault. I thought I was okay but a week later the pain started happening...Had to get a lawyer involved because of the insurance companies...last year I ended up having back surgery due to the accident...You did the right thing calling the cops.
