I have a massive CD collection, especially when you include all the downloads (legal and otherwise) that I have burned to disc. But, even as much as I dislike radio in general, I spend more time listening to the radio than anything else. I am to the point that I like being surprised by what song I will hear next. Even with the iPod on shuffle, at some point I realize that whatever song does come up next, I put it there. That takes the surprise away.
I have also noticed that when finally getting music that I always wanted to check out back in the day and couldn't (for whatever reason) it doesn't have the same impact that it would have back then. No matter how good it is, it just doesn't feel quite the same because it is now sort of 'out of context'.
I have figured out that illegal downloads are NOT what makes it so difficult for artists to sell their music, it is the access to the sheer quantity. It is the amazing access we have due to the internet. There are no filters. There is no radio telling us what is "good". There is no eMpTyV showing us what is "good". There are very few individuals or DJs who have the capacity to tell us, or that we trust. Until the record companies can return to the days of focussing on quality not quantity it will not change. And even then, we still now have access to all the unsigned and independant bands. Discovering something good rests on our own shoulders. And that can be "work" sometimes. Who has time for that? We have 100 different distractions at any given time. TV, Movies, Books, Magazines, Family, Jobs, Hobbies, etc. And we live in a world of ADD and ADHD. It can't be helped, the world moves to fast nowadays and we have the access to see it all at any given time....
WHEW! Rant over, I am tired just thinking about it!
Great post Dave. But I'm probably the opposite.

I never listen to radio anymore. Guess we're spoiled, but I find having access to so much great music and the ability to load up your IPODS and cars, etc......that I just don't have the patience to listen to songs I don't like on the radio anymore. Not sure whether that's a good thing or bad thing.

Being a music nut, I love the ability to collect any and all music (boots or otherwise) of your favorites. Can you imagine if we all had this kind of access to music back in the 70s/80s & early 90s when music was at its best!

You know, back when you actually had to have talent and know how to play an instrument.
