OT: Book Suggestions....

I posted a similar post a few months ago. I go NUTS without a decent book to read...
I can't find anything that looks good. Last time here, 1000 little pieces was suggested (or whatever it was called). It was "okay" but I need a new one.

Like fiction, horror, survival, inspirational stuff. Don't dig war, political, or chick books.

Any ideas?

Best Scary novel I ever read hands down was a book titled: The Cabinet of Curiosities. I cannot remember the author. But being an avid Stephen King addict, this story by that author was scary! This thing kept me spellbound, up on edge and I could not put the thing down! I read it on and off constantly till I finished it! Great mystery thriller.    :D :D

The authors are Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, I just looked it up for you. The beginning is a bit slow, but it picks up, and then you cannot put it down!

I <3 that book, probably the best modern fiction I've read. You obviously have good tastes, Sirloin. :D

Duma Key (Stephen King)
Any Michael Slade book - very creepy, graphic horror/crime stuff. Also throws in lots of real historical stuff in most of the stories. But if you've never read him, you kind of have to start at the beginning, because he has recurring characters that age and re-surface.

Sirloin?

Wasn't he the writer who exchanged depressing letters with James Joyce?

That's an impossible question to answer. :D
Try looking up an Amazon review or something. 8)

Good thread. I was actually looking around the shelf to find some interesting books the past month or so. Like brywool, I always like a good book to dig into. Thanks artist4perry about the suggestion of The Cabinet of Curiosities and Rhi-ject ( love yah) for Historian.

For any ghost people out there that like to get creeped the hell out.. I'm reading Strange Guests by Brad Steiger. Mainly a book about poltergeists and how it takes you through the story of that side of the paranormal. Freaky.

I also enjoy books by John Grisham.

Bleachers is excellent and also Playing for Pizza. Bleachers is told by a high school quarterback who had it all and was All-State. 15 years after their dynasty and high school football days (where the city is crazed and treats it like their religion) their head coach dies. All the players round up one more time in the school bleachers, telling stories about that team and will decide once and for all if they hate, or love their coach. Awesome.

Playing for Pizza is about a Cleveland Browns 3rd string quarterback who started in the AFC championship game and threw 3 picks in the loss. (Go figure, Cleveland. Perfect team for a fictional book.) He was the most hated man in Cleveland and that game alone forced him to leave the NFL and football all together.

He ends up getting a call from an Italian football league and they are desperate for a player that played American football in the NFL. He excepts the offer and the story takes off. Very good.

So you Wanna Be a Rocknroll Star by the guy in Semisonic was also good. I just read this one called "Rock On!" by a guy that was an advertiser in the music business. Kind of "The Office" meets Rock n Roll. It was okay.

Ooh you just made me remember a good one...

A Painted House by John Grisham... its not one of his "lawyer" books.
Totally different type of novel and its SO good. Did not think I'd like it but I could not put it down. Its about a family in cotton farming land down south in the... I want to say 30s or 40s... been a few years since I read it, don't recall the exact year its set. Its from the p.o.v. of the young boy in the family, and circles around cotton season and the drifters they hire to help pick, etc.

I may have suggested this in the last go around of book thread... if I did, sorry to repeat. I just never remember WHAT I post and I think wrote about this one somewhere, might not have been here. If it was beyond yesterday, its gone from my head already. :(

That book was based on a place in Arkansas, I want to say Blytheville, but I am not sure.
