OT: Songs that make you cry

I turn into a blubbering idiot everytime I hear these songs:

Streets of Heaven-Sherrie Austin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VbTxQbMm-4&feature=related

Slipping Through My Fingers
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNaNVuWes_U

and just one of the many Christmas songs that brings tears to my eyes:

Mary Did You Know-Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd (there are many versions but I like theirs best)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nAMiw22kNM

It's just been one of those days when a good cry would do me no good but I'm willing to give it a try anyway  .
I'm sure I'll come up with more but we'll start here.

Pete Seeger singing 'The Midnight Special', my darling Dad's favourite song. But it's tears with a smile, because every time I hear it, in my mind I can hear Dad singing along, clear as a bell and slightly out of tune, almost as if he was still sitting next to me. On the days when I miss him badly, this one 'brings him home'.

The other one that brings a tear most times is Thin Lizzy's 'Dublin', a love song for home. I'm not from Dublin, but swap Adelaide or Cardiff for it, and it's how I feel; which ever one I'm in, I'm missing my 'other' home.

Well after a beer or two these songs can make me cry like a baby....... dunno why, but they can :

"Stranglehold and "Cat Scratch Fever"- Ted Nugent

Motley Crue - "girls girls girls "

Any song on either disk of Talisman's five men live, but especially "Mysterious"

Hm, I don't think I've ever shed any tears to a song, but I can think of a lot of songs packed with a different kind of emotion than a typical 80s ballad or what not. It's really gotta be songs that tell a "story" and aren't just groups of contrived lyrics:

Dan Fogelberg - Same Auld Lang Syne
Dan Fogelberg - Leader of the Band
Alice In Chains - Nutshell
Billy Joel - Leningrad
Bruce - Streets of Philadelphia
The Guess Who - Sour Suite
Todd Rundgren - It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference
Dream Theater - The Spirit Carries On
David Pack and STEVE PERRY - Brand New Start
Don Henley - The Heart of the Matter - Maybe my favorite on this list... the sad resignation+spirit of moving on that this song both captures feel so real
John Waite - Missing You
Rush - Nobody's Hero
Styx - Dear John

I have ALWAYS loved "Same Auld Lang Syne". It's a very moving song and difficult not to have a quiet moment of reflection while listening to it. "Leader Of The Band" is also a great song. If I remember the story correctly, I believe Dan wrote that song as a tribute to his dad. As for Henley...dude has some of the greatest music ever written!

"Everybody Hurts"

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on.
Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes.

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along.
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on.

Everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand.
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on.

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes.
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. (repeat & fade)
(Everybody hurts. You are not alone.)

Yep, for his dad - definitely why the song has the emotional impact it does for me. I know it's coming from Dan's heart. R.I.P. Dan.

This makes me cry every time I hear it. Not a country fan, but country music does have a way of tugging the heartstrings.

This one always makes me tear up:

Journey - Why Can't This Night Go On Forever

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGMMXRYvzJQ

Lost in twilight, the memories
Precious moments, you and me
We've been old friends, all through the years
Picture postcards, sharing tears

What's in our hearts, there's never time, to say
Need you tonight, lover don't fade away
I've seen your city lights
As I walk away
Why can't this night...go on forever

Without love, we won't survive
Run together, we rule the night
Tell me secrets, oh that make you cry
Wheres the laughter, we gotta try

What's in our hearts, there's never time to say
Need you tonight, lover don't fade away
Like a photograph
That time won't erase
Why can't this night...go on forever
Go on forever and ever...ever and ever

I don't think a song itself makes anyone cry but some songs just have the ability to bring back emotions associated with life events.

Streets of Heaven always makes me think of my twin nieces that died last year and when I think of that I always hear, in my mind, the sound of my sister's uncontrolled, painful sobs as their little casket was closed and I feel my sisters arms around me as we sat at their graveside crying together as their father placed their casket in their grave.

When I hear Slipping Through My Fingers I think of my own little girls that it seems like just days ago were babies in my arms and one is now about to leave and go out on her own. I would give anything for just a little more time of them being little enough to hold and rock to sleep again. My 7 year old keeps promising me that she'll always be my baby and she'll always let me hold her because-in her words "nothing bad can happen when I'm in my mommy's arms" yet she keeps growing and growing and needing her Mommy less and less.

Not sure exactly what could have happened to G&T Sky to bring forth such emotions when he hears "Girls, Girls, Girls" but I'm sure there's a sad story there. Go ahead and share it with us, we're here for ya.

BTW, THE definitive version of Lang Syne is definitely from the live "Greetings From The West" CD/DVD. Fogelberg's voice is more mature, a bit deeper, and a bit raspier than on the studio version and it really works well. Drum sound is huge too

Living Years is definitely a solid choice.

The couple lines in Syne "She said she married her an architect, says he keeps her warm and safe and dry. She would have liked to say she loved the man but she didn't like to lie" - that's the part where the song hit me when I heard it the first time. How fuckin universally true, and you don't even have to be married to understand it

I'm pretty good through the whole song, until the end: "And as I turned to make my way back home, the snow turned into rain"... then the sax. That's when I go all emotional. The lyrics are amazing, and I'm big on great lyrics... anybody with a heart can relate to that song, very universal. The best time to listen to it is driving on the interstate on a dreary snowy day.
