Joey Tempest.

Never mentioned in any 'Best Of' categories. I think he has a hell of a voice. Europe's lyrics may have been cheesy, but his voice is great.

Wow... oddly enough that makes me want to dig out my copy of The Final Countdown... and I think I have Out Of This World somewhere on cassette. I remember hearing that Europe used to both open and close their shows with TFC.

I thought you were gonna say Ace of Base.

Europe... oh God, how I hated them.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Europe, sheesh Louise....

I do remember the song Carrie. I do remember once in the late 80's I was chasing around a girl named Carrie. (I was also chasing around an Angie, Beckie, Lori, Melissa, Ruth , and Sandy and all of em were running and saying no    )

Anyway I thought, "this great melodic rock tune Carrie will sort her out" (of course I did't call it Melodic Rock" back then I just called it rock) SO I made a tape of the song , send her flowers (stole em from Lori's mums garden I think :D :D ) Anyway I get this note back from Carrie saying, "Gee nice song so what, I aint interested"

Fuck you Joey Tempest , fuck you Europe,. brush your goddamn teeth. Im still mad at you.

Amen. I never did like that band. I thought "The Final Countdown" was a lame attempt at cloning the sound of the band Asia. They even named their band "Europe" which is a continent just like Asia is. Why didn't they just start an Asia tribute band?

Geez, of all the bands to emulate, they pick "Asia"- God another sucky band. They were so lame.

LOL and I have this friend that we always make fun of because one of his quotes was "You know how you know if you have good taste in music? You listen to ASIA!!!" That's almost as priceless as the time he was listening to some 80's night on the radio with another one of our friends, only to exclaim excitedly "We should SO have a Madonna night!!!!" Trust me, its funnier if you know him... and know the fact that he characterizes himself as a metalhead. I'm not being mean, just passing along the info...

Never really thought of Asia as a sucky band. Pretty talented musicians. A league above Europe.

Talent is still really no way to gauge lameness. Talented? Yes (didn't some of the members actually come from the band Yes?) Lame, also a big yes on that!!!

Speaking of Yes, they are going on tour without lead singer Jon Anderson. Jon has decided to start a new band called "No" in which he, Robert Plant, and Steve Perry will all be sharing lead vocals.

Until Steve Perry leaves to form his new band "Maybe", which performs only Journey songs and only vaguely discusses touring which they never truly decide on!!!

I prefer my prog rock a bit meatier... they just seem too watered down to me every time I try to listen to them. And believe me, I tried. Maybe "lame" was a bit strong of a word to use earlier... but I'm definitely bored by them. When I think of prog rock I think super talented and musically adventurous. That band just doesn't do it for me.

maybe talented, but their music, as Asia blew. No feeling, no soul, nothing interesting. Their music to me was as interesting as the video they did with the tumbling chick and the TVs. blech, yawn...
To each his own. I shouldn't just come in here and whiz on people's favorite bands...

Try checking out some John Payne era Asia.

I actually find that material quite a bit more adventurous and entertaining than "legacy" Asia... the album ARENA is spectacular.

ABSOLUTELY agree... if you haven't heard their last two albums Start From The Dark and Secret Society, you are really missing out. The latter album also has the song "Forever Traveling", a tribute to Steve Perry and Neal Schon.

Here is an old favorite of mine from the DVD LIVE FROM THE DARK:

I love both the Wetton and Payne era ASIAs, and I own a killer 5-string bass that I bought directly from John Payne -- literally called him at his studio in the U.K. to arrange the deal. Also bought one of Geoff's keyboards that can be seen in one of their live DVDs (Wetton/Thrall era). Both instruments were used in the recording of several albums, and Geoff gave me a track list -- very cool. Yes, I LOVE ASIA, and those are two of my most precious treasures.

Europe has made at least 30 songs that are WAY better than "The Final Countdown"(which doesnt say much, I know  )

January of 08 they had a live webcast from Stockholm, where they played some classics and some cover songs "almost unplugged"
They just released a cd from that show,,,here's few of the songs from the show. John Norum is still one of the best guitar players around!

Europe is a great band... a lot more then The Final Countdown, but that is what they are known for. If you listen to their other stuff, you'd be surprised..

That's the problem, if people don't go past the top 40 radio , they have no clue. It is a band that past and present has really great guitar. The lyrics of many non-top 40 hits are NOT cheesy in any way. The U.S. loved cheesy back in the 80's unfortunately, so that's what got airplay. And their new CURRENT music is so much better than anything they have ever done in the past that they have made and old "semi"-fan a huge fan now 8) That is a band I will travel for if they ever make it back here to tour. I am STILL mad that I missed their last U.S. tour :x

Image Bah, he's no Eric Martin.  Just kidding, I know what you mean, same thing with Mr. Big. Most people only know of the couple radio hits they had and have no idea of the great stuff in their catalogue.
