Am I the only one that thinks Steve Perry may have been intoxicated or in some sort of altered state during this memorial? His eyes seem blank and he's not singing from "within." Notes, range and all that bullshit aside, he doesn't seem to be singing with the passion that separated him from everyone else.

I can't access the link, but this was a memorial wasn't it? Journey wasn't really performing in that time period, right? Just think it is unfair to judge it was bad when it wasn't really a performance, rehearsed and all.

C'mon, give the guy a break. He was rusty ... hadn't sung for 3 yrs. Wasn't until '94 that he got back into the groove for FTLOSM.

No, no, no...all of
that aside, he didn't seem coherent to some degree. Look at the youtube. He seems "out of it."

He sounded better doing DSB with the Sox, so rusty aint going to cut it as the only culprit. How do you forget the words to Lights, a song you've been singing for 10 years or more?

He fucked up Faithfully, too. I don't remember him fucking up Lights. You sure you have the right song?

His voice sounds pretty rough, but I think he sings the song very well.

Didn't Herbie coach him on the song lyrics before he went on? He got through Lights but I was referring to him asking for help with the lyrics before he started, along with asking the guys to step down even though they hadn't practiced at that tempo ever. Neal and John probably struggled ,trying to find a comfortable tempo so not to let him embarrass himself. It obviously didn't work.

Hey Andrew...after suffering through the journey performance, I surfed over to the autograph concert at hammerjacks and am listening to it now...it's actually not half bad! LOL

I think his performance was poor because he just didn't feel like part of the band.

I was the one who got this video from a San Fran TV station
KRON
They sent me the masters
I dubbed them and voila all over the internet.

For one, he sounded hoarse even when he started talking in the intro. Second, he doesn't have any effects on his vocals - or if he does, they are very dry. Third, the mix has too much vocal in it.
Just my humble opinion. I'd still pay more to see him with Journey than I would pay to see any other band, even if Perry had an off night. Just seeing him back on stage with Neal would be fucking priceless. Hell, they could get Arnel and Jeremey to help him with the vocals.
It's obvious why the guy quit singing. I'm sure Steve Augeri gets it.

That's what happens when you sit around and do nothing for years at a time.

I hadn't listened to that gig for several years so thanks for posting it Drew. It sounds like the whole set is down a full step, which I'm not a fan of at all. I think Perry's voice sounds different than we're used to. Steve's voice has a Rod Stewart quality to it that I like. I like how Steve sounds on this show. There's not much, if any, effects on the vocals. If the dude can bring out the goose bumps a full step down, and he does, how can you not like that? I thought it was great. Thanks again for posting it.

Awful? Seriously, it isn't that bad! Sounds alot like the Steve Perry we most recently remember from SM and TBF. This is the closest thing we have to isolated Perry vocals. Very dry, none of that lush reverb he likes to emote on. Put some lush reverb on this, add some treble in the mix, turn down the lead vox a bit, and it will sound very similar to what everyone is used to.

the first autograph record is a fine piece of melodicrock

One thing I always felt about this performance (vocals aside) is that the vibe was messed up without Ross and Smitty. No bass and no drums affected the groove to me. Made it more loungy and loose. Seemed as though Perry was playing to it a little bit and I don't think it worked.

but neals kick ass clean tone makes up for it. sounds good not over-processed. note the pickup switch from position 1 to 2 in the solo of lights. sweet sound! ( guitar nerd

I had agreed in another thread that this is his worst vocal performance because he was rusty. Gunbot is right. Herbie Herbert said in an interview Steve Perry called him wanting to be part of the memorial. He wanted him to get him the words, because he couldn't remember all of them. I won't repeat the rest of Herbie's comments about the memorial towards Steve Perry because they weren't particularly nice, and, of course, he had an axe to grind in some respects. I only report the facts here, folks, not subjective bitter comments by an ex-manager

Now I do believe him completely when he talks about the brilliant talent of Neal Schon

.

Andrew, this performance has been debated countless times. Why would you want to stoke this fire again?

I think he was out of it because he was kind of expecting people to sing and they really weren't. I think that he didn't know how to handle that reaction or lack thereof, so he kind of kept pushing them to react and they wouldn't. Also, the songs were lower and it sounds like the 3 of them didn't rehearse together before. Sounds like they said "Okay, play it down a whole step and we'll just wing it" which I can see. Being the pros they are, that shouldn't have been that big of a deal.
I really think the crowd didn't react because that nuttyass hairdo startled them....

I have it on CD, it's a good piece of memorabilia to have, really nothing more as far as a quilty performance.
For what it was, it was a 1-off reunion of a mysterious, loved, missed superstar band in front of what? 250K? It was cool.

Come on dude. This went on for a solid YEAR with Steve Augeri recordings, every single false note mocked for page after page.
There's nothing wrong w/ AJM posting this, I don't recall ever seeing him weigh in on it.

This is 17 years old. Why resurrect it again?
