Just ran across Steve Perry's collaboration with America (I expecially like the short clip in which he is seen singing and talking about the work):

Seems Steve sang a lot with non-Journey musicians over the years, and some of the music is kind of obscure and rare.

So I thought I'd ask Journey aficionados for opinions as to the BEST or worst SP collaboration (or your favorite, and why), as well as info as to rare or obscure Steve Perry collaborations.

There must be stories about how some of these came about, and what it was like to work with Steve, from some non-Journey sources.....

OK, I am going to copy these unaired Journey and collaboration pieces from the King Biscuit/Super Jams 2 show in 1978 (thank you Judywoz for posting these on Youtube, with the following intro!):

The unaired King Biscuit/Super Jams 2 episode featuring Journey, with interviews and intros with band members, doing their own tunes (they had only one album out, (with Steve Perry that is), "Infinity" at the time, and also them doing really great cover tunes. Also featuring, really the only times Steve duets with a female singer.

It was recorded in one day in October 1978 at the Automat Studios in San Francisco. Featuring guests: the Tower Of Power Horn Section, Tom Johnston of the Doobie Brothers and Annie Sampson & Jo Baker of Stoneground.

Journey at this time was: Steve Perry (vocals), Gregg Rolie (keys, vocals), Neal Schon (guitar), Ross Valory (bass) & Aynsley Dunbar (drums).

One of the 1st SP material that I hoarded was a 3-cd compilation of all the above collaborations (with the exception of Nuno -- I believe only the man himself has the masters). A lot of these obscure and SP's own rare songs have made its way on youtube posted by devoted fans.

My favorite is the duet with KLoggins, Don't Fight It, because it is the only one where he shares the lead. All the others, he was background. The collaborations with Nuno, I so wish he would get it out to us.

How about downloading some of the more obscure ones? I don't think I've heard the collaboration with Barnes and Barnes or Ned Doheny or Bogert.

I really love the stuff that was posted on Youtube from the King Bisquit Super Jams (in my last posts.) Did you hear these before? They are great, especially the stuff with Annie Sampson. I think she is the singer on the People Get Ready piece as well.

I bet there is a ton of material people are hoarding of live or radio shows of Steve collaborating with other great voices. Or stories of "the making of" from studio musicians, radio station employees and the like. I can't get enough of this stuff!

Hi Peridacytl, the King Biscuit Flower Hour - Super Jam II - was a live show over the radio in 11/15/78. All those songs you found above was from a cd boot.

The Barnes & Barnes song - don't you want to go the moon - is posted above found by StoneCold. It was a fun cutesy song, its origin (as the story was told) came from a party SP went to while he was in LA, circa '84, with the America guy, Dewey Bunell?. Anyway, the guys were a little drunk (or high), and out came that song.

Peter Bogart song - title escapes me at the moment - probably someone else will chime in. I will look for that song & post it for you later.

Oh, the Ned Doheny song is Sweet Friction. Very sweet, jazzy.

I'll go with “Don't fight it” as Perry was responsible for the lyrics. I love the guitar work by Neil Giraldo on that song and it was nominated for a Grammy.

Hi Annie! Thanks for Sweet Friction. Can't really hear Steve though. Not terribly special, in my opinion.

Now Can't Let You Go is definitely in my top 3 of Steve's best collaborations! I mean, Steve doesn't say much but what he sings is perfect. Sexy, emotional.....He has such an ear for the exact right phrase and the exact expression to use. His great instrument was not just in his vocal range (which is pretty much shot,) but in his ability to use words and melody as an instrument in conveying meaning and emotion.

OK, so far I think my favorite collaborations are: Can't Fall Asleep to a Lullabye (with Amerika), Can't Fight It (Loggins) and Can't Let You Go. (Golub) Honorable mention for the King Biscuit material (hey, I don't care they weren't recorded. For the purposes of this thread, anything from anywhere is OK... )

I agree with you, Rick. The second one is not SP.The first one has that definite SP drawl and vocalization, though I've been fooled before by an occasionally talented imitator. Annie: Do you know when this was recorded? Is it a demo, maybe? Anyway, thanks for sharing this part of what appears to be your voluminous collection!!!! It's always wonderful to hear new stuff! Yeah, it is so beautiful. I just love when Steve's voice goes up "You don't knoooww". That high note just pierces my soul..... And I love the clip of him singing with America. He looks happy, and sexy, and oh my....

I don't think this song gets enough recognition as one of Steve's greatest singing collaborations.
He put out so much material, and so much is SO GOOD, that a lot gets overlooked.

It occurred to me -- in my posts written at a late night hour -- I had this guy's name wrong. It should be Tim Bogert, ex-Vanilla Fudge bassist. Apparently, he collaborated with our SP in the early ‘70s.

Are all these things really considered collaborations? Don't fight it is the only one I can think of where Perry and the other singer get equal time. David Pack's is the only other one that remotely comes close to that from what I can hear.

Collaboration has nothing to do with equal time. It's simply working together with other artists on the same project.

I thought they were talking about stuff where he contributed a majority portion or at least half of the vocal work. Everyone seemed to be fawning over little oohs and aahs he did on different records, but I can barely tell its him on half of the stuff.
