The article says that other musicians were polled of their top 20 picks and the results were tabulated by an accounting firm, but it doesn't specify how many people were polled or if only other well known musicians were polled.... I guess that will be spelled out in the article when the issue comes out.

Granted, the guy can write a song, but Dylan has long been the poster child that the ability to sing is not actually required to be a singer. With so many great singers out there, I fail to see any way he can make a "best singers" list.

Bob Dylan?! Great writer, sure........but singer???? In a top 10 greatest rock singers poll? Ya gotta be kidding.

lol...John Lennon.  Staggering around unbathed, with soiled pants and more drugs inside of you than a fuckin' Walgreens doesn't equate to much in my books. That dude was a fuckin' solitary weirdo and though I don't condone his murder I sure as fuck don't miss him, either.

She wins because she probably ate half the singers out there.

What a stupid fucking list! Aretha ahead of Elvis?? Give me a break. I loved Ray Charles, but ahead of Elvis? How in the fuck does Bob Dylan EVER make any list with top singers on it? The guy couldn't suck more if he tried!

Bob Dylan?? Yeah, sure. Suckiest ever, just like RollingStone.

Saint John- Not sure where you're getting your 'vision' of Lennon. He was on heroin for a very short time (less than a year), he was on acid for a very short time (2 years). Pretty mild compared to some rock stars. Lennon WAS a great singer. Personally, I think McCartney was technically better, but RollingStone never gives him credit.

Yes, Aretha ahead of Elvis. Elvis was a great singer but didn't hold a candle to Franklin or Cooke.

I think it said that McCartney came in as 11th. The total list has a hundred so it will be interesting to see the rest when it comes out....although I tend to think polls are arbitrary and the arts are all subjective...it still is interesting to see who other artists admire the most.

average of Rolling stone that read it or care are people that grew up with this stuff... so you know thats why the list pans out...
And if Elvis is #1 they would call it racist and sexist... ;-) i guess the biggest surprise for me in this list is where is Barbara Streisand...

Eh...That still indicates the list should be made up of rock singers. Otherwise, you would have opera guys in there, too.

Good point. Rolling Stone magazine sucks for the most part. I like reading stories in there, but they are constantly and consistently wrong about stuff like this, and as Rick said, it's all because they don't want to be labeled.

Good point, I'm a bit confused to what they mean by that as well..either in rock or all singers of any genre within the time of rock and roll. :?

Hmmm, I would pick Tina Turner over Aretha for rock. Just saw Tina in concert and she still rocks!

Refreshing to hear some brutal honesty about John Lennon. Can't stand it when I hear someone go on and on about how great he was.

The only one of those listed who should even be on there is Elvis. He brought the genre into the mainstream and meshed it with blues and country. The rest are soul singers with the exceptions of Dylan and Lennon, and while they were great writers, they were by no means great singers. As for Aretha, I think she's great and lucky to have had the career longevity she's been blessed with, but she needs to get her ego in check. She is NOT the greatest soul singer ever, as there are too many good ones to count. These 'lists', especially ones in Rolling Stone are good for a laugh, if nothing else.

Or at least in the top 5. Seems like they skipped over everyone who sang from 1970 on. No Freddie Mercury in there, either. Highly disappointing.

As much of a Perry guy that I am, the only name that belongs at the top of that list is Elvis. There will NEVER be another musician as significant as Elvis, in ANY generation. Whether you like the guy or not, his impact on the entire music world can never be denied.

Fuck that fat bastard. Perry could sing circles around that dude. Let's hear Elvis sing Mother, Father. Perry, in his prime, could sing anything Elvis ever did. Fuck, he probably still could. And he wouldn't gyrate like a fuckin' giant dildo, either.
