For the guitarists out there

What are your gears/rig like?

For me:

Fender MIA Std Strat from 95, Blue
Schecter C-1 Classic
Takamine CX something... nice middle of the road Acoustic/Electric, been beaten to shit and still sounds/plays good

Mesa/Boogie Dual Rec Maverick 2x12 35W

Fulltone Fulldrive-2 MOSFET
Boss DD-6
Boss CE-5
Boss GE
Dunlop Std Crybaby (Shit sweep range)
Ernie Ball Std. Volume Pedal

I love my Strat to death, I have a love/hate relationship with the Schecter. It's got a Seymour Duncan JB/Jazz combo, very hot pick-ups that can sound great on 80s AOR/metal/some prog stuff (Dream Theater and what not), but it's way too aggressive for middle of the road "power pop" humbucking like you'd hear Wally Bryson use on Raspberries songs. It also tends to sound pretty muffled and I'm not a big fan of jumbo frets... intonating bends is a bitch if you're amped up at a gig or drunk. I owned a Parker Fly Deluxe for a bit, that guitar just didn't do anything for me. Neat design, completely sterile sounding guitar. I just "feel" my Strat when I play it. Love that fuckin thing.

My next axe is going to have to address the fact that I don't have a good solid crisp humbucking guitar... any suggestions? I've really liked the sound of some of the Gretcsch's when I saw Randy Bachman and one of the guys from Gin Blossoms using them.

1. It's a Jackson USA Dinky w/active EMG pickups.

2. I'm just running Pro Tools with a few outboard effects.

Haven't seen another Strat mentioned here, think you're talking to me. They are just stock Fender Americans that I shielded. I love the tone. I am definitely looking into Lindy Fralin pickups right now though, heard tons of great things. Also interested in the single coil EMGs David Gilmour was using for a while. I've heard nothing but bad things about Lace Sensors, for what that's worth.

Yep, I had forgotten that I've heard your stuff. I like the sample of Faded Dreams. Your guitar has a very nice Boston like sound to it. Good stuff bro. You'll have to forgive my forgetfulness.

Hey John,

Alone Tonight's got a great sound to it... like a Van Hagar meets Boston. You got a great voice too. Kinda reminds me of Rollie.

Only thing I got handy on this comp at school is my dad and I covering Marshall Crenshaw's "Whenever You're On My Mind." Hmm, guess Tripod won't let me link externally... piece of shit. I'll get it up somewhere tomorrow or you can try it manually http://ehwmatt.tripod.com/whenever.mp3

Fun little song... recorded into my old Tascam HD mixer/recorder... maybe, geez, 6 years ago? Played a cheap Fender P-bass, my old Gibson Nighthawk Classic, used a shitty old Alesis drum machine, my dad sung, and I mastered it piss poor so ignore the hum

Well, nothing spectacular here - just a simple half-size acoustic. Half size 'cause I've got small hands and big boobs :)

Thanks man. I need to redo the drum track on it... it was just a rough take and I went with it. It's hard to get motivated when you do everything on your own. I'd love to have another musician to collaborate with.

I know what you mean... my buddy does all his own shit like that too and he was really writing better songs when he had a band recording with him.

I just bought a new Takamine acoustic with steel strings but no pickup. it might be too big--I can return if necessary and try again.

I have an acoustic with nylon strings--no clue about the make cuz it was my dad's. no name generic prolly. big fat neck--too big for bar chords and my skinny fingers but I finger pick notes anyway so it's ok.

I have a fake strat aka non fender. it's pink. it won't stay in tune. :? i'm taking it for a second opinion at a different guitar shop.

and a marshall amp. tiny tiny so no one can hear me.

no gadgets yet. and I have barely a clue. hehe

Right- that was directed at you, I shoulda specified. I'm thinking of the 50s ones for my strat and the Texas Specials for my Tele. I love the way these guitars play, but I'd like to get more of that Tele/Strat sound. The stock pickups don't seem to capture that. My favorite strat tone is the Clapton lead sound that he's been getting the past 10 years. Really like that tone.

The Texas Specials are KILLER in a Tele. I've heard first-hand plenty. You will have a very diverse guitar if you throw those in a Tele.

I think Santa will bring them this year. Also need a new bridge for it too. Great necks on those guitars.
