I just had friends come in who lived in the Cascade apartments in Anaheim Hills. They'll stay with us for now as the husband works in Burbank. I hope all of our MR peeps from So Cal are safe. It seems this fire is flaring up everywhere.

It is so dry in California. I would gladly send them the rain we have had for a few days. Everyone be safe!

Three fires in 3 days. Something not right about that. The Sylmar fire is visible from my house (plumes of black smoke.) But I am on the flats so I'm ok.

I pray for the safety of all affected by the Brea fire.

Is Montecito contained now?

There must be a history of these fires like earthquakes. I suspect just not enough property to burn and media to notice over the last 200yrs. It seems to be like living in a hurricane zone or a tornado area where I live. The only diff is the fires seem to be every year. Prayers to everyone.

You're right...there is a serious history with the fires. These fires burn in Oregon and California almost every year...some years are worse than others, but they ALWAYS have fires. They have a serious lack of humidity there (at least Northern Cali, and southern Oregon) and it's so dry that it just waits for a flame!

I'm originally from Oregon, and I have several friends that work 3-4 months out of the year as forestry fire-fighters. They make enough money in those 3-4 months, that they only work part-time jobs the rest of the year. Pretty damn dangerous job!

I understand that California is by far the most fucked up state in the country, but is it asking too much to run some irrigation through these fucking forests? Especially considering the state borders the God damn OCEAN!!!

Hell, the state runs out of electricity in the summer as it is...WITHOUT adding irrigation to the electric bill! I'm with you though...fucked up state. It's got some beautiful sights, but I couldn't live with all the B.S/cost of living in that God forsaken place.

Not going to help much; if it's anything like Australia, it would probably make it worse. The worst bushfire years are the ones that have rain late in the season, because then the undergrowth comes up again and provides more light fuel.

You live in bushfire country, you just have to learn to deal with it and plan and build accordingly, same as for flood plains, tornado belts, cyclone zones, earthquake country, etc. Something Canberra town planners should ~$Y%# learn!!

Pacific Northwest is absolutely beautiful country, but you have the opposite problem there... it rains ALL the time!!! They say that Washington and Northern Oregon have higher suicide rates than most other states because the rain affects people who are depressed. I think that's a little crazy, but it would suck to have rain 200 plus days out of the year!

Crime is down in California. I've lived here all of my life and never once been a victim, nor has anyone I know. It's a BIG place, most of it is peaceful and lovely, but if you don't feel like the quality of life is for you, THANK GOD. You stay whereever you are , please!!

Irrigation? Another cockamemie idea. We are talking miles and miles of rolling hills and lowlying brush, not forests.
It gets dry like tinder. By the way, this is a desert, and irrigating miles of dry brush is not exactly cost effective. Siphoning the ocean? What are you talking about!?

The only problem really is that too much housing development was built where winds and brush meet. That was a bad idea. But a lot of people in CA value living in the canyons and hills. They pay for their losses. It's called homeowner's insurance. And the rest of us in CA pay for them too, in higher premiums.

dan... you have NO idea what you're talking about. first off you CAN'T use ocean water to irrigate... it's salt water... salt water kills living things... unless you live in the ocean. we have the BEST firefighters fighting these fires. they're risking their lives to save people/animals/homes. if you knew anything about our santa ana winds you would know that trying to put out a raging fire that is being fueled by dry brush & 70+ mph winds is pretty damn tough. embers are flying & staring fires everywhere. the wind is changing direction. these men & women are workin 24+ hours. most of them were in los angeles fighting the sylmar fire when the orange county fire started in corona.

I am just so saddened by the folks who have lost their homes. Especially the poor folk in mobile homes. I hope they were insured.

Nothing can make up for the loss of one's history, though.

I have a wonderful friend who lives in Yorba Linda, CA....her family had to evacuate yesterday, they stayed with friends last night.

I spoke with her earlier today and they were headed back to their home to assess the damage, haven't spoken with her since...hope all is well.

I just can't imagine.

Absolutely you do! Did you know those guys have flown over to Australia on more than one occasion when we haven't had the manpower to deal with our bushfires (a fifth of the country went up in flames)? No words for how much respect I have for these people.

I moved to SilverLake in L.A. in 95. Where I live, the population was around 75% latino and the avg. house was 220,000. Now the population seems to be around 50% white, the avg. home goes for 1.2 million. I've never been harrassed by anyone or had a crime committed agianst me or my friends. All the latinos I see are working 6 days a week at jobs no one else will take. There are jobs available but if people don't want to work, let them go to people who need them. We keep bitching about illegals using up all the money for social services but nationwide whites are still the largest group on welfare.
Overall, California's not a perfect state but it could be a lot worse.
