Anyone heard Jeremey's Frontiers?

Thanks to Rick, I gave Jeremey's Frontiers latest concert bootleg a thorough listen. To be honest, I was not one of those sold on Jeremey ... thought he has a shrill-y singing voice ... which I mostly kept to myself as I am not one to denigrate, knowing Jeremey has a lot of friends on this board  . So, it would appear that those YT samples of the band performing live Journey songs didn't really do Jeremey or the band justice, and I am now a convert.

Providing no tweaking was done in the studio and this is actually how they sound live, they are really very good! Song for song, very comparable to Journey live on the Vegas dvd — factoring in, of course, that Frontiers is probably bare-bones while Journey can afford million$ sound equipment and system which they most certainly utilize in their shows.

As far as the vocals go, I think Jeremey did a better job singing the hits (on this show) than Arnel did on the Vegas show. Now, I realize Vegas was one of Arnel 1st shows with the band, and I have not gone to or heard any Journey live shows (subsequent to Vegas) other than YT clips, which are not credible indicators anyway.

But, considering the big disparity in ticket cost between Journey and Frontiers, I know which band I would rather go see play Journey songs. Too bad they don't come out west.

Jeremey kicks ass, and if "Can't You See He's Gone" is any indication, I'd MUCH rather hear his original material.

For me, Journey is more about Neal's guitar playing and the melodies than anything else, and Arnel obviously carries the melodies quite adequately (and really, so much more). NOBODY can replace Neal. Journey would be much less legitimate for me with Perry + a stand-in on guitar than it is with Neal and a stand-in on vox. So I don't think I'd go so far as to say I'd rather hear anybody but a band with Neal in it doing Journey...

But yes, Frontiers is quite good :)

NOBODY can replace Perry. Lincoln Brewster played Neal's parts note for note at age 23. Guitarists can be duplicated, "The Voice" can't.

Agree about "The Voice" but don't agree about Neal. Some guitarists can be replaced but for me, Neal is in the same category as SP - irreplaceable.

I love Neal's playing. He's an ass as a person, but love his playing. Guitarists are a dime a dozen. Great vocalists are RARE.

Been through it a million times. To many of us, he ended the REAL Journey by trying to force SP to get surgery or get out.
He's had many marriages and alcohol problems. Basically a musical genius and a loser with people.

It's true, there are lots of guys with chops out there on guitar, but even the best will tell you they wouldn't dare presume to be able to cop another great's vibe/feel/style. To your ears you might hear "note for note," whoever played with Perry didn't touch Neal for me as a guitar player. Not trying to be a snob, but your post is just spoken like someone who doesn't play guitar and just doesn't "know."

Some of the regulars a few weeks ago, in Jeremey's boot thread, were offering to copy and send it to you. Rick, SJ, a few others. PM them.

Jeremey has that bluesy Perry high tenor that I haven't heard in Augeri or Pineda. They are all great singers, but on a good night I think Jeremey nails Perry better than the others.

I'm not a musician, but I do have ears and understand what you are saying. To me, the originator of the songs that we love will always be the best. Neal is the best; SP is the best.

It took both Neal and Steve. The magic happened when they teamed up. That voice and that guitar and pure fucking magic. Apart from each other, it's like Steven Tyler without Joe Perry... or David Lee Roth without Eddie Van Halen. The magic is just not there.

Haven't seen/heard the boot that you're speaking of, but I have seen them live on a number of occasions. Frontiers is great! I miss the 'original' lineup, because they were the first, but this new lineup is very good too.

I encourage everyone to go see them live if you have an opportunity. You won't regret it.

Frontier's cover of one of my favorite Journey songs:

Mike, try and set a summer date that gives everyone ample time to make and I think you could have a nice turn out. I'd certainly be able to make it with enough notice. Been wanting to check your band out for a long time.

i'll always like him for the fact that he stuck up for his family and didn't let these guys manipulate him into putting his child and wife on the backburner because that would be cold and heartless to ask anyone to give up their family and especially when a baby is involved.he'll be glad later he got to see his baby grow up and know he made the right decision especially when you consider all the divorces this band has been through.like someone else said neal is probably just as good on the guitar as clapton or vaughan but when it comes to people skills he is very deficient because music has always come first at the expense of any human bonding, contact or proper relationships.

Steve Perry on his solo tour looked and sounded great from what I've seen on YouTube. But "something" was missing without especially Neal and Jonathan, and even Steve Smith and Ross. Journey was missing. So Steve on tour alone, you're right, is the voice, but it's never the same magic as him with Neal and the guys. I have an attachment to watching Neal on stage, Jonathan on keyboards, and Ross and Deen. I love Deen and feel he's a wonderful asset to the band. Arnel is doing a tremendous job and has a lot of chemistry with Neal, so, thankfully, there's more years ahead of seeing these talented musicians. I'm glad they're still going strong. I can't imagine not seeing Neal on stage.

As far as Jeremey, I didn't give him enough credit either. In recent songs I've heard he's very talented. He's done some beautiful versions of Journey's music and his own. I wish him much success.

We discussed doing it when I played with the band. The new version of Frontiers has only one or two people singing back-ups (at least that's what I've seen from the clips). You really HAVE to pipe in vocals to get it to sound anything like Journey's albums from Escape and beyond. I don't have a beef with pre-recorded backing vocals as long as they are there to SUPPLEMENT the vocals onstage. JMHO.

Summer dates are actually being booked as of now, though festivals not at least Jan 2009,though there are a handful of Club dates in the Mid Atlantic already booked. It would be cool if everyone could come for a festival gig.I am getting married in June so no gigs from June 25th til July 4th.
I will keep you posted!!

Some of those Escape+ backing vocals are downright frightening. I can't even begin to dissect the individual parts... so big

Yup! Steve stacked the SHIT out of those vocals. I remember reading an interview with Neal, where he stated that Perry would record something like 20 to 30 backing tracks for some of the songs. He also said that at that point it was getting rediculous!

Thanks for checking it out despite your initial reservations! I don't believe there's any recording on the net or otherwise (that performance included) that really and truly captures what being at a live show is like...And no, there was no studio trickery there, just a two track recording from our soundman.
