I don't agree. Compare the sound of ROR with some of the other music of that time: Stacey Q, A Flock of Seagulls, Wham, Culture Club, New Kids On The Block, Spandau Ballet, Madonna (we're talking 'True Blue' here), Bananarama - they were all bands being sold on a specific image and sound. Hell, 1986 was the year Princess Stephanie of Monarco released a pop single - now if that isn't 'fashion' music, I don't know what is.
I'll agree ROR went with a more 'eighties pop' feel, but it's still an album with strong roots in the past and there's heart and soul in music; I can't accept it as simply something tossed out to be more commercial.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
