I was in Walmart this evening (again) and as usual, looked in the Journey bin to see what CDs were being stocked. I saw this and was quite surprised. Anyone ever heard of it or heard it?

I'm not sure if this is the same cd or not but I heard a "metal" type of tribute to Journey many years ago, and it was AWFUL. Honestly, almost every track was completely unlistenable. For the Perry detractors, it's a great listen. As soon as you press "Play", you will forever understand and appreciate Perry's brilliance and most unique voice.

I've only heard the first two songs, I thought Mickey and Bobby were awesome, a great effort from both.

I've yet to buy the whole album.

I downloaded all the samples (short as they were). Not many great ones, but perhaps maybe two or three. 8)

I think Tommy might do a better cover of Open Arms than Barry does. It's close.

"13. Listen Separate Ways - Kelly Hansen"

Worthy of the purchase if just for that track.

Kelly's Wheel in Sky isn't too bad either. Able to get all in their entirety.

ABSOLUTELY!

I told him once how much I enjoyed this track and he had a neat little story about how he got involved in it. He seemed really shocked that I had heard it!

I heard of it and was able to buy it. I think the singers did a great job. They did not try to sound like Steve and did it their way. I think Mickey Thomas is the best job and should be the front man for Journey. But that's just me.

"Separate Ways" was well done, and I give some credit to Tommy Shaw and Bobby Kimball too. Most of the rest made me wince.

One of the problems I have with albums like this is that the arrangements are exactly the same as the originals. It merely invites unfavorable comparisons with Steve Perry (or Arnel for that matter). I would like to have heard some different versions of these songs. As it is, most of the songs come off like bad karaoke.

I agree that Mickey's voice fits the Journey sound well and did the best job on this release. I am not sure, at his age now, I would want him fronting the band. Even at 40ish, Arnel brings some nice energy to the band. Rumor is Mickey is the guy that Herbie wanted in Journey back in 1983.

Ditto. Granted, I only heard short clips of each song, but Kelly's the only one who made an impression on me.
