Do Singers Ever Really Hang Up the Microphone.

We all know that the ever recurring topic on this board is will Steve Perry release new music? The recent topics on the subject got me thinking whether there is any precedent for a singer of Steve Perry's success/fame who has walked away and said that's it I'm done. I know Perry has never said that, but I can't think of anyone who has?. They all come back in the end, don't they?

I wasn't trying to start another will he won't he thread. I was thinking about whether anyone else of his stature had simply turned their back on it, never to be heard again. I can think of lots of guys who said they were going to but they all came back in the end.

I asking for names of people who called it quits?

John Fogerty comes to mind. Wrote, sang, played lead guitar on all his band's (CCR) songs in their short hit-parade run ('68-'71?). You couldn't turn the radio on, in those days, without hearing a Creedence song playing -- with that distinctive gruff voice belting out tune after tune. All of a sudden, nothing. Word was the band broke up ... too much fighting, drugs ... lost of creativity ... later, brother Tom died. The other 2 members, Clifford and Stu, re-formed as Creedence Clearwater Revisited in the '90s, playing bar venues and old CCRevival (Fogerty) songs. John stayed retired.

Holy moly, JF came out of retirement a few years ago with a new album, new backup band, playing new music live. Don't follow him that closely. I think he swore off his old CCR music.

Actually I don't think John Fogerty ever retired. He put out an album in 1975
and his disc 'Centerfield' was big in 1985. He put a few others out in the late 90's too.

There was some kind of a lawsuit after 'Centerfield', because the label that owns the
rights to the CCR catalogue sued him - they said his new stuff sounded too much like
the CCR songs! Well he wrote them and it is his voice - that would be like Steve Perry putting
out a new CD and getting sued by Sony for sounding too much like Journey. John Fogerty
won the lawsuit, but it probably delayed any new material for quite a while. Part of
his courtroom defense was to bring out his guitar and play the different songs to show how they were
not the same. I would have loved to be on that jury!
