I recently started taking up drawing again since my girlie bought me an art kit for my bday back in March. It was something I always enjoyed doing and now I'm somewhat getting back into doing it again. I decided to share these with you guys, and for me to get some feedback. What better people to show who will give me honest responses ( and I'm sure some smartass ones as well

)

If anybody else got some art they did themselves, I'd be pleased to see it!

-This is a drawing to signify me and my laday's relationship. It's a Superman Symbol, with a Sunflower pokin' through. Done with Pastels.

This one I was just messing around at 3am. Done with pastels and shitty paint.

Good stuff man! I especially liked the third one! I believe that was the cover of one of the Superman issues from right after the whole Death/Funeral/Reign storyline right? That brings back memories!

NICE! I didn't know if anyone would reconize that. It was the first issue when the real Superman came back after his death of Doomsday and after all those other Supermen claimed they were "the Superman" Good stuff!

Nice. I love Superman. You should keep it up. My brother would always draw detailed cartoons but said he would never be able to paint. He took painting up two years ago self-taught and has been accepted in local art shows for a year now. He is consumed with his new passion and really enjoys it.

Your, use of hot colors and warm colors in this piece is very good; the balance is great the eye is drawn to center, the sunflower jumps out at you; great use of colors and symbols.

Your, use of hot colors and warm colors in this piece is very good; the balance is great the eye is drawn to center, the sunflower jumps out at you; great use of colors and symbols.

pretty cool breakdown, thanks for that! It has always been just a hobby and I never really used it more than just that.

I took a lot of art classes in school but it was poorly taught and was just an easy thing to get into during the school day. It's been hit and miss but I always enjoyed doing it. As time goes on, each drawing flows much better than the one before. I'm just a pick up and draw type of guy, I'm sure if things were taught that I would embrace it in a good way.

Anyone got anything?

annpea.. one thing that is odd for me, is that I can draw anything that's in front of me, doesn't matter what it is. I can take an object so small, and create it so big.

The thing is, I CANNOT for the life of me, draw anything from scratch off the top of my head. I can draw things cartoonish in my own way, but taking an image from my head on paper just doesn't connect. I must see things in front of me. Why is that?

I used to be kind of the same way. I also cannot draw a human or animal to save my life...

I'll have to dig out my Artwork from the late 80's and take some pics of them

Here's another one I did on Election Day (Sorry, Tito)

Pastels & Marker. The pastels were wearing down on me and getting to thick. It was hard getting to the small reach area's and it smugged a little out of line. I wasn't too pleased about it.

That's only a small part of being a natural artist; all the great masters used objects or models to guide themselves by. I can only say this can be a great help to you, check out these two writers Duane Preble and Sarah Preble : Artforms: An Introduction To The Visual Arts( the seventh edition, revised by Patrick Frank) published by Pearson/ Prentice Hall/ Pearson educational division. There is also an interactive CD-ROM with hands on exercises; it's free with every new copy of Artforms revised seventh edition. It covers everything.

Pretty cool stuff, man!

One thing that may help you with your trouble drawing things from imagination (and there's nothing wrong with that, very few artists do ANYTHING without some sort of source material in front of them), is to try out some of the computer based natural media programs. The one I use is Corel Painter. It's a pretty expensive program, but they have huge student discounts. It will take some getting used to - And you'd need to pick up a tablet from Best Buy for about $99. But it will unlock a lot of creativity and give you some new areas to explore.

Those are really great Travis! And I have always been one who can try to sketch or draw looking at something else but not from my imagination , but I can't do ANYTHING like you have done here. I am not an artist, but what you have done here shows that you are definitely an artist! I don't think it matters if you can create your own images or not. This is a talent.

Good work, YJ! If I may say..I can see that your tightening up a bit in your work..I know, I've been there...once you gain more confidence in your ability it will show in your work so keep at it and believe you can. Your taking from something that inspires you and letting your imagination go by giving it your own twist ....how you view something and how you present it is your own unique vision even if it's a well known subject and thats a good thing. Don't let the skill and the love of creating slip by..the more you do the better you will become. :wink:

This thread reminds me of a visit I had to my Mum's when she pulled down a box of all my old primary school work from the loft. There were so many drawings in there that I did as a kid, much of which was a revelation to rediscover. I was absolutely fearless in the work i created then and drew absolutely anything and everything without worrying about proper proportion or perspective.

Unfortunately with knowledge comes form and things can become considerably less fun. If only I had that freedom now. It's like jumping off a really high wall or even a subway when you were 12 - I look at the same wall now at 34 and think there is no way in hell I would jump off that again as I would likely break my legs! This despite being fitter, taller and stronger. The fear just creeps in with the knowledge of what could happen. You definitely don't have the same restrictions when you are younger.

The pictures in this thread remind me so much of the exciting work I did as a young kid and I envy the fearlessness that you have in just drawing whatever you like without being saddled by academic knowledge or ability. There is definitely something to be said for that.

Good stuff. I can't draw for shit. My art career ended early, like in the 1st grade when I tried to draw human stick figures but just drew a head, legs, and arms... no body

Art class was a nightmare for me all through grade school... I still shudder to think of it.

This gives me a great warmth with all of this positive feedback. It's one thing to draw something but another to share. I simply have noone to show to other than my babe, and this is nice for me to hear some kind of things like this. Thanks for all of the advice and taking out your time to put in a reply. I'm currently working on a couple things now and will post them up as soon as my name is signed. Thanks men and girlies!

But I must say, I certainly enjoy seeing other peoples work more than I do to draw my own so.. would be cool if some of you guys would post any of your own sometime. I'd be happy to take a look
