Married Couple Arrested In Shackled Teen Case
UPDATED: 9:34 pm PST December 1, 2008

TRACY, Calif. -- A missing teenager ran into a fitness center Monday with an inch-thick chain shackled to his ankle, and he may have been held captive, Tracy police said.

Wearing just boxer briefs, the 17-year-old burst into an InShape Fitness Center at about 4 p.m., said Chuck Ellis, who works at the gym.

Police have arrested Michael Schumacher, 34, and Kelly Lau Schumacher, 30, at a Tracy home where the boy was allegedly held, police spokesman Matt Robinson said.

No charges have been currently been filed against the married couple, police said.

Ellis said the boy looked emaciated, bruised, scared and said, "Hide me, please hide me."

"He was hunkered down, terrified," Ellis said.

The teen told gym employees that he was taken from a group home about a year ago, Ellis said. The group home is about 70 miles north of Tracy, in Sacramento.

Robinson said the boy was confused when first approached by detectives, unsure where he had come from and how long he was being held against his will.

"The wounds he had and his physical condition as well as having a chain around his leg corroborated his basic statement that he was being held against his will," Robinson said.

Covered in dirt or soot, the teen was also bleeding on his back and had a significant cut on his arm, Ellis said.

Robinson said detectives planned to interview the boy, who was taken to Sutter Tracy Community Hospital, more extensively Tuesday when he is a "little healthier."

Now the couple have been charged with the teen's disappearance and captivity. I may know more later today.

I swear, people should have to pass some kind of test before they are allowed to procreate. You have to, to be able to drive a car? Just makes me sick, I saw a couple waiting for a bus a few months ago, she was obviously drunk and he was a loud mouth loser, neither one gave a crap about the crying baby in the stroller. Poor thing, with parents like that, who knows when the last time he/she ate or was changed. Took everything in me to not march over and go all ballistic on their ass.

TRACY, Calif. -- A Tracy couple has been taken into police custody after an emaciated 17-year-old boy ran into a fitness center Monday afternoon with a chain wrapped around his ankle with a padlock on it, a Tracy police spokesman said.

Kelly Lau-Schumacher, 30, and her husband, Michael Schumacher, 34, and face charges of one count each of torture, kidnapping, false imprisonment, child endangerment, and corporal injury to a child, according to police spokesman Matt Robinson.

The police investigation began after the boy escaped from a home, Robinson said.

Wearing just boxer briefs, the 17-year-old burst into an In-Shape City at about 4 p.m. Monday, said Chuck Ellis, who works at the gym.

Ellis said the boy looked emaciated, bruised, scared and said, "Hide me, please hide me."

Employees from the business alerted police, who arrived to question the boy, who did not know where he was at first, according to Robinson.

He eventually pinpointed a home and provided enough information for police to take the couple into custody, Robinson said.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he is in serious but stable condition and being treated for superficial wounds, officials said.

Two young children believed to be the couple's children were taken into the custody of child protective services, Robinson said.

A search warrant was served at the couple's house overnight, and evidence was pulled out this morning that will be compiled for the San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office, Robinson said.

The charges are related to the 17-year-old's case only, according to police.

The teen told gym employees that he was taken from a group home about a year ago, Ellis said. That group home is about 70 miles north of Tracy, in Sacramento.

How fucked up is this? They even had little children. What kind of freaks could these people be? "Hey hon, what d'ya say we go down and play torture the teenager in the basement after we put the kids down?"

It is fucked up. The article says that he was taken from the group home, the local news here ( I live above Sacramento) says that they boy ran away from the group home, but Police don't know how the teen met these fucked up people. The news also said that the teen will possibly be transferred to a Children's Hospital. I just hope that the young children, who were taken into protective custody didn't witness any of this.

KOVR 13 evening news (Sacramento) is saying now that the teen's aunt may have something to do with this too. Police are now searching for her... Nuts... just plain nuts. How can a family member leave one to suffer at the hands of another? [/b]

TRACY, Calif. -- The aunt of a 17-year-old boy who ran into a fitness center Monday afternoon in shackles is being sought in connection with the case, a Tracy police spokesman said Tuesday.

A Tracy couple already has been arrested in connection with the case. Kelly Layne Lau, 30, and her husband, Michael Luther Schumacher, 34, face one charge each of torture, kidnapping, false imprisonment, child endangerment, and corporal injury to a child, according to police spokesman Matt Robinson.

Lau is a Girl Scout troop leader in Tracy, according to Pam Saltenberger, CEO of the Girl Scouts Heart of Central California. It covers 18 counties in the state.

Saltenberger said the woman has been a Daisy troop leader since September 2008. The troop consists of kindergarten-age girls.

The girls met at a public building in Tracy, Saltenberger said. She said the Girl Scouts always perform background checks on volunteers, and that Lau's came back clear.

The police investigation began after the boy escaped from a home, Robinson said.

At a Tuesday news conference, Robinson showed a picture of a woman who police suspect is connected to the case.

Police said they are seeking Caren Ramirez, 43, who is the boy's aunt, on suspicion of participating in the alleged abuse, Robinson said. Ramirez also has an outstanding felony warrant for an earlier allegation of assault against the boy, he said.

Ramirez, who doesn't have a permanent residence, could be on her way to East Palo Alto, Robinson said. He also said she would face the same five charges as Lau and Schumacher.

The unidentified teen burst into an In-Shape City at about 4 p.m. Monday wearing only boxer briefs, gym employee Chuck Ellis said.

Ellis said the boy looked emaciated, bruised and scared and said, "Hide me. Please hide me."

Employees from the business alerted police, who arrived to question the boy, who did not know where he was at first, according to Robinson.

He eventually pinpointed a home and provided enough information for police to take the couple into custody, Robinson said.

Police said until the victim talks about his side of the case, they won’t know the full story about what happened.

The boy was taken to a local hospital where he is in serious but stable condition and being treated for superficial wounds, officials said.

Two young children believed to be the couple's children were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services, Robinson said.

Schumacher and Lau were set to appear in court Thursday, according to jail records. They were both being held at San Joaquin County Jail on bail of nearly $1.2 million each.

A search of the home turned up evidence implicating the couple, Robinson said.

Investigators still were trying to figure out the connection between the couple and Ramirez, who authorities believe visited the home occasionally, he said.

The couple's charges are related to the 17-year-old's case only, according to police.

The teen told gym employees that he was taken from a group home about a year ago, Ellis said. That group home is about 70 miles north of Tracy, in Sacramento.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- The three alleged abusers of a 17-year-old teen, who escaped captivity with a shackle on his ankle, tortured him with a bat, knife and belt, court documents released Thursday contend.

Police say a bruised, emaciated teen boy wandered to this gym after being held in a home in Tracy, California.

A 14-page criminal complaint adds more chilling details to the bizarre tale that shocked the central California city of Tracy.

The teen escaped a year of captivity Monday and walked into a fitness center in Tracy, bruised and battered, wearing only boxer shorts and with his bloody ankle shackled, police said.

Police arrested Caren Ramirez, 43; Kelly Layne Lau, 30; and her husband, Michael Luther Schumacher, 34, in the case. Lau and Ramirez did not enter pleas as they made their first court appearances Thursday. Bail was set at $ 2.2 million each, a court official said.

Ramirez is scheduled to appear in court at a later date, the official said.

The judge also issued a gag order for people connected to the case, Tracy police said.

Authorities this week have been trying to piece together how the teen ended up shackled in the home of Lau and Schumacher in Tracy, about 70 miles east of San Francisco.

The teen was being held at the couple's home, about 500 feet from the fitness center, and he apparently was able to get over a wall and onto the center's property, police said Wednesday.

Lea Leonardo, assistant manager of the center, said the boy came into the facility and begged her to hide him.

"He was very dirty. He looked very young, very skinny and was wearing nothing but men's oversized boxers," Leonardo told CNN's Nancy Grace. "He was terrified."

She said she was shocked to see the chain on the boy's ankle and that his foot was swollen. She said she hid the child and called 911.

The boy initially had been removed from his parents' custody in Sacramento, California, by social workers because of abuse and was placed with Ramirez. Police earlier had said that Ramirez was the teen's aunt, but now say she is a family friend.

The teen was sent to a group home after Ramirez was charged with felony abuse against him, police said. He escaped the group home about 18 months ago.

Authorities believe the boy returned to Ramirez, but aren't sure when or why, said police, who also were trying to figure out the connection between Ramirez, Lau and Schumacher.
