New Perry effort...

Nice to see Perry was able to pump out some new "liner notes" for the Sony Legacy Playlist re-run series. He truly is the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business". Give it hell Steve!! How does he manage to maintain that heavy work load?

Steve is Playing the supervisor card. He cleans up the older albums, the boys do the touring. The back catalog generates mega Royalties. Neal, Jon, Ross and Steve make the money. Deen and Arnel get paid like any other employee. It's all good. Think of Steve like an offsite manager, he's on your payroll but you never really see him work.

That's because in order to be seen working, you actually have to work.

I bought a CD in one of these "eco-paks" last night only to open it up and find that there is NO WHERE to put liner notes. The whole thing works like a pop-up book, tug at this, flip this up, disc falls out. If there are new liner notes they'll either be short & sweet a la "Gotcha again, fuckers!" Or visible only under a microscope. Since the only obvious place for something would be the flap.

Maybe it will be on a static sheet that sticks to the disc and when you take it out, you can put it on your refrigerator and see it every time you open the door to get a beer.

And, after all the hard work he did in the past, he doesn't HAVE to work. Lucky guy. Besides, SP probably has to write the liner notes to get it right cuz Sony obviously can't (read the myspace info they put up).

i think you have to go to the website for the liner notes. that's what the 20th Century Masters series says anyway. I have Rick Springfield and Whitesnake so far in that series.

If singing is work you're in the wrong business.

Perry IS kinda the Wizard of Oz these days...

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!... er, until he releases something! SILENCE FRO BOY! And you John Cain... you clinking, clanking, clunking, excuse for a Greg Rollie Replacement, write some more songs that'll get me more MOOOLAH! Now.... GO!"

;)

Seriously though, it's amazing how much work Perry DOES do for a band that he reportedly wants nothing to do with. Maybe he should take over Herbie's spot. I mean, he doesn't want to sing with the band for... WHATEVER REASON ;) ;) ;), but he obviously knows what works for them and the legacy is obviously important to him. He, Cain, Schon, and yeah Arnel (deal with it!) should write some new Journey tunes. Let Arnel sing em, let Perry promote and arrange the tours. Let him manage the band. He's obviously done (unless I'm mistaken) much better financially than the other guys, so he obviously has some brains.

Exactly. He alread has Elvis status, so what more could he do to improve his legacy? Let Arnel, JSS, Augeri, and whoever else wants to go blow their fucking voice out. Perry is enjoying the "normal" life that he never had the luxury of when he was singing his fucking brains out for over a decade. While I could love to see some new Perry material come out that is decent, my view of his legacy will not be affected in any way. Now if he were to put something crappy out and then go on tour and blow his voice out, people would remember him for that. That's why I think he probably won't take the risk... unless he simply needs the money.

well no pressure here from MR about singing or not singing; i'm sure he does that enough on his own. i don't know if you just wake up one morning and decide to sing or not; i'm sure if you haven't sung in awhile you have to find that place in your world where you can place your passions and feel secure enough with your voice to sing. not only does he have to please himself with his work; he has to please everyone else. Everyone is a critic. Again, why not leave when your voice can be remembered as being at its best...you really can't ever top yourself and have that angelic voice everyone remembers all those years ago.

Hmmmmmm.................

SP only has "Elvis Status" to his fans. Hell, his solo career barely puts him above Lisa Marie Presley status.

He can't sing, but he still wants to have a somewhat meaningful role. He's simply not at peace with the whole can't sing anymore thing.

That's just silly. You don't just count his solo career anymore than you would count Mick Jagger's solo career.

That's the bottom line; His voice is shot and therefore he rightly won't risk dissappointing anyone. That is also why you won't hear from him again. Believe me, singers don't quit singing if they still believe they can get up in front of a crowd and not embarrass themselves. You can have all the money in the world, but you will sing if there is someone around who is willing to listen to you. I know singers who have quit, but only because they lost their voice.

Yeah, because if it weren't for SP, Greg and Neal would still be playing 18 minute Santana tunes and JC would be in Babys Act IV (probably with Arnel on lead vox). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but as good as they are in their own right, it was "the voice" that made them millions......

I guess it comes down to what each person's definition of "lost his voice" is. There are people here that think he's "lost his voice" because he can't hit those glass shattering highs anymore. Where as others don't think he's "lost his voice" because range was never what his voice was all about. I would take 50% of what he's got vocally, over 99% of what else is out there. But if he doesn't want to sing anymore, I'm cool with it, heck it's his life to lead.

I'm guessing $$$$$ is very important to him as well. I guess writing, singing, putting out new stuff are a moot point...I'm mean, he's in the "Senior discount at Denny's" phase of his life so contantly finding ways to make $$$ re-hashing this and re-hasing that is a solid career move. Nice retirement plan he's got there.

He might as well get a part time job at Sony. Maybe he can be like to folks are Wal-Mart and greet the younger artists on there way in the building. Or....

"Hey Steve"

"Yeah boss"

"We need you to find a way to make Escape a 3 disc Gold edition cd set that includes complete bios, trivia, photo's, guitar pics, a lock of your hair, bonus tracks, bonus demo's, a recording of an interview you did in Japan in 81, a poster, Don't Stop Beliving in 5 different languages, and paint the cd's to look like mini albums."

"I'm all over it boss"

True. But Steve Perry at 30 was back at his stepfather's turkey farm or whatever it was :) . Steve Perry, as enormously talented as he was, had not made it by 30 and was giving up. So, please, come on. It goes both ways. He amade millions because of them also. The magic of the guys together writing and performing is what made all of them. Of course, his vocals catapulted them, but without them, he might have left the music business permanently and given up.
