Did Steve Perry Know He Was Done in 1987?

After watching this video, it seems to me that Perry knew he was done touring with Journey in 1987:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQANIcfKV1A

A quote from the interview:

Steve Perry wrote:To walk away from that and choose regular life as opposed to the "circus life" was a huge decision.... I just had to jump off the merry-go-round.

He went on to do the FTLOSM album and tour, but stopped halfway through the tour due to bronchitis and cancelled the remaining shows. He then cut another album with Journey in 1996, but do you think he ever really planned on touring with them again? If so, why didn't he do it in 1994 instead of his solo gig?

I know this topic has been beaten up, but it's good for a few more bashings. So many people have wanted there to be a chance for Perry and Journey to reunite, but I think the gig was up in 1987. Perry was simply done with the "circus life". Plus, getting bronchitis and having issues with asthma while on tour in 1994-1995 probably just reinforced his determination to be done with touring:

In the middle of his For The Love of Strange Medicine tour, Steve Perry contracted bronchitis and was forced to cancel several shows to recover from the illness. After the tour restarted, he contracted severe asthmatic bronchitis. Again, he was forced to cancel several shows and finally the rest of the tour.

When are you going to write your book on all this stuff Andrew?

I don't know, but it'd go a long way to explain what he was doing walking around with that fork stuck in him. :P

I think he really wanted to excel as a solo act. When FTLOSM didn't set the world on fire, he said screw it. Sony, though still needed one more album to be done for his contract to be complete (I'm really guessing now) so he gets the boys together, fulfills his obligation, rendering him free from the Tyranny of Sony /BMG, and walks off with no strings attached.

Well....after re-visiting those TBF interviews....I have to say that he very much seemed to feel 'A Part OF the Band'....I saw no trepidation, hesitation, or any otherwise indication of SMFP being unhappy with either the band, or his 'situation'....so I guess the answer to your question would be....Image

He's nothing but a damn "book tease"! I hope he gets a cramp form all that writing!!! He also teased us that he was going to put something "rare" from Perry on the main page a few weeks ago. Just goes to show that you can't take those people too seriously from "down unda"!

Yes! And art. The artist name is Duchamp. The story behind it below:

Fountain is a 1917 work by Marcel Duchamp. It is one of the pieces which he called readymades (also known as found art), because he made use of an already existing object—in this case a urinal, which he titled Fountain and signed "R. Mutt". Duchamp submitted the piece to an art show as an act of provocation, but was lost shortly afterwards. The work, as well as the act of submitting it to the show, is regarded as a major landmark in 20th century art. Replicas commissioned by Duchamp in the 1960s are now on display in museums.

Thus the words I displayed over it. Art~ what defines it? :D :D :D     Didn't know it would even be noticed! LOL!

Yep. After the ROR tour, all that time went by, and what did he do? He did a solo album in '94. I agree, his heart was definitely more as a solo act by a certain time period. And what always struck me, he said after his first solo album he was always going to do another one with Journey then. But yet in another interview he mentioned he was thinking about doing a second solo album next, but his mother told him to do a Journey album, which ended up being ROR.

Which I don't fault him for that. Really, people were lucky they stayed together as long as they did. Most bands with personality and creative differences break up far sooner and sometimes only come back together out of necessity, i.e., their solo careers weren't that successful or they needed the money that it would bring to reunite. Steve Perry doesn't need to go back to Journey for money, and he could definitely still have success with a solo album.

So all is well. Neal and Jon made the right decision to finally move on.

There was Against The Wall in 1988...and the fact that it was shelved by the record company would hardly have helped with the general disillusionment. Having said that...it was shaping up to be a very poor record I reckon. 'Melody' is very strong vocally but the rest is mediocre by Perry's usual standards.

I just realized that Jon, Steve and Ross will be eligible for Social Security in four years or less. Time flies doesn't it?

It's scary to think about it...unless we somehow find away to scientifically stop the aging of rock stars, by the time I'm 40 all of my favorite bands will be long gone.

GET TO WORK YOU SCIENTISTS....

Beats me. I don't know him personally and wasn't there in 1987 to know what was going on. Can't read minds either or time travel.

Fun to speculate, I suppose ... but it's kinda silly when I don't know any of these people any more than they know me.

So...How about those Grammy Nominations? Nothing has changed as far as Journey or other melodic rock bands getting noticed (not that any of them really set the world on fire anyway), but I thought WhiteSnake might sneak in there this year.

It does look like Robert Plant might actually win a Grammy which I would never have predicted a few years ago. AC/DC and Judas Priest getting some love too.

Here are all the nominees

LMAO ... yes ... I'm a total glutton for punishment.

I keep coming back, because there are still interesting discussions - once you wade through all the people who express their personal subjective opinions as though they are facts and ignore people who act like they know band members well enough to eat dinner at their house twice a week.
