Is 'Chain Reaction' the Worst Journey Music Video?

Postby SherriBerry » Sat Dec 06, 2008 11:03 pm

Where I grew up, we didn't have access to MTV and the only time I got to watch music videos was when
I babysat and could watch 'Night Tracks' on WTBS, sooo....until 10 minutes ago I had never seen the
video for 'Chain Reaction' - thank God. They played 'Separate Ways' and 'Faithfully' and I have the DVD,
but this one was mentioned during some video commentary with Jon and Neal on a clip on YouTube,
so I looked it up.

What the hell happened on this one? And quite frankly, that mannequin freaked me out.

Well, Sherri, all I can say is that you will call this one fav the more you get into Neal. It has absolutely nothing to do with the song or the group or world peace--whatevah. It's about Neal in a tux.

just sayin

You can learn quite a lot from this video....Steve likes to impersonate choo-choo trains (00:51), Neal drinks too much, and apparently when he does...innocent mannequins are in for a rough night!  I also learned that when Cain drinks, he starts playing like a frigging madman (3:42). As usual, Ross is his normal clown-around self. Good thing they had him around to defuse the tension between Neal and Steve. Who knows...if he hadn't have been there, maybe Steve would have left the band!??? Overall, I think this video is a glimpse into what it was really like for the guys at every band practice!

Agree with ya, they all look great in their tuxes, they should have done all their videos in tuxes. Oh wait, Perry kinda did. :) That video just kills me though, how the heck did they talk Neal into looking like he is going in for a kiss.....with a friggin manequin, not once but TWICE!

The mannequin is definitely freaky, true, but I love the video. Neal really shines in it, and he looks great in the tuxedo with his black hair and black tuxedo  . Actually, all the guys look great and really get to shine too. They had some bad videos. I like this one.

They should have included the Captured version of Lights/Stay Awhile. MTV played the video quite a bit.

But it's so bad......it's good.
I love it.

I LOVE videos for the most part. Every song should be accompanied by a "live" video. :) Being able to see your favorites on tour from all over the world on youtube, Rocks! Get Wayne Isham on that......he's responsible for some of the best live band videos from the 80s and 90s. Like this one is perfect to accompany this song. LOL so sue me, I'm a visual creature.

Live videos are OK. I should have been more specific...I hate videos that "tell a story." I would often hear a song and would have an image of the story of the song in my mind then I'd see the video and it would totally ruin it for me-I like my story better.

Trivia (Since a Billy Squier video surfaced)
“The Beat” by Squier, has been sampled more than any other piece of modern music. Even if Squier's other music had flopped, he would still be independantly wealthy just from the beat's royalties alone. Another reason why getting your name on the credits is a must for any artist. I'm glad Journey did the right thing with NWA and Jeremey. These days, I'm sure all of us would welcome a little extra income.

I like watching Neal, but not in this video! One of my favourites for that is the Bad English video 'Price of Love' -
he was pretty hot in that one or his solo in 'Who's Crying Now'. Watching him move in to kiss a mannequin almost made me toss my cookies Image I'm surprised he didn't mind the scene where Steve knocks him flying on his ass - perhaps that's one of the reasons it didn't make it to the GH DVD.

I agree on the tuxes though - they all looked great (except it's the 21st century now, so smoking did not - yuck). They should take a page from that and dress up more like Daniel Craig's James Bond (not tuxes, of course!) and lose that biker look with the big jewellery and chains they've been sporting recently.

On the plus side, it was nice to see something Journey I had never seen before - more of Steve too!

Love the video... from the days when videos were still videos and not something resembling a major Hollywood production. Mind you, a little production isn't always bad in a video, but most of the videos nowadays take themselves too seriously and usually end up blowing in the process.

the biker chains, leather, boots and dark shades is a great look and Neal does it well. I'm not sure if that is his everyday look but I suspect it is. At least , I hope so. It works for me. :) I think he rides routinely and has for a long time.

Nah, I prefer this look:

But I think we're in the wrong thread! It may be time for Neal Schon Porn Day and then we're in a separate thread the guys can ignore - Arianddu said to go for it whenever :) .

Great photos. All I know is forget videos, when I became an even bigger fan of Neal Schon was when I found on YouTube an audio recording from 1978 of You're On Your Own. I was on the floor from Neal's playing. Un-be-lievable. It blew me completely away. That's when I became interested in pre-Perry music by Journey. I'd like to see that in concert sometime.
