Work up in a weird and dark mood this morning and wrote a very dark sounding tune. Kinda Neal Young meets Chris Cornell. I make the Cornell comparison because I had morning voice and I sing it very hard and raspy because I think it fits. Just guitar and vox and my ragged voice. Gotta warn ya that its pretty dark, unfinished and a rough mix. I appreciate any feedback as I really value a lot of peoples opinions around here.

Not sure about this one myself but if it wants to come out I say let it.

To me it is like a cross between Bad Company and WhiteSnake. Just a tad bit slow. I was waiting for it to pick up even if only for a brief interlude, but it just rolled along like a Pink Floyd song.

Very Cool though.

It may pick up if I think of something to add as I consider it unfinished. It may get strings and percussion but I dont know.

Definitely got a british blues feel to it. Maybe some Charlie Sexton too.

Contantly fascinated with words & writing, my direction would be to figure out what the story is.

The story I'm picking up on is that dude and some chick are coming off a long night of substance abuse and they're hungover & sick because of withdrawals. So rather than sober-up, they dive right back into it all just to mask the pain. Maybe it's pills, maybe a needle. Don't know. Doesn't really matter as the story isn't about the chem, it's about fearing the pain of cleaning-up.

Maybe the story is even darker...drink-the-koolaid cultish. The world sucks, so he's going hare-kare. He helps rationalize it all by talking his girlfriend into it too.

Maybe the story isn't real at all. It's all in dude's head. These are just the things he want to say if he had someone there with him. So the whole song is just emoting the passion of his own head game.

Next step is to just let the music come out as you get inside the story line. Perhaps darker is better. The melancholy guitar will paint the mist and haze this story guy sees in his day-to-day depressions and/or his fight with sobriety. I think I'd lean toward playing technique for colour rather than using outright effects. Maybe the bass line takes on a different rythym at times to show underlying turbulence in the story. Maybe use percussion rather than loud drums. I can probably hear some high end syncopated piano peppered here & there to emphasize a memory of something less painful, and/or some state of euphoria when they get high again. Also, adding some gritty strings to create a Zep Kashmir feel could create a little dissonance every so often.

Uhm, obviously this can be whatever you want, and I may be all wrong. But I get a feeling of maybe Whitesnake doing SRV's 'Riviera Paradise'. Then again, it may be something really simple & organic that produces the most punch.

Again, go for the story and build the music around it. But for sure, don't lose that tone. You might thicken it at times where the story needs it, but never thin it.

Me too. We could have an MR house band and ask Andrew to be our agent.

I am all for collaboration with anyone. G.I. Jim, take it and run with the chord changes if you want. If you have any ideas on how to expand this song in to something more epic by all means go for it. I plan on the guitars being acoustic accept the "solo" if you want to call it that where it gets kind of that reverb drenched bend in to the upcoming chords..

Thank you guys for the compliments on my voice. I have to admit that I cant stand the sound of my own singing voice so I find it hard to sing live. Your compliments really mean a lot. Before I could ever consider singing full time I would HAVE to go to an ENT. One side of my nose is ALWAYS stopped up and has been since I was a child. Deviated septum and getting that fixed is very painful so..... I would like to hear myself with open sinuses and a clear nose. Everything you have ever heard me sing is with one nostril shut. It is weird how it switches sides.... I just learned to live with it and dont notice it most of the time.

One of my close friends has just had exactly that fixed - he said it wasn't nearly as painful as he thought it would be. I saw him 2 days after the operation and he'd already left off taking the painkillers the day before because he didn't need them. And it's made a huge difference to him, and his singing!

I had a room mate a few years back that had it done and he was in agony. This guy had serious back problems for years and a high tolerance for pain and he mumbled to me as best he could, "please shoot me." He was hurting and in fact I cant recall ever seeing anyone in that much pain so I FEAR having that kind of operation big time.. Nice to hear that your friend had little pain. Maybe it depends on how much they have to remove.
