9 minutes of goodness. One of Rush's best.

Thank you for posting that! It used to be one of my favorite songs.

Back in the 80's we had a local band that nailed that song. Brings back memories of white lines and late nights at the local rock club.

Side one of Rush's "Hemispheres". Loved that whole thing.

Cool stuff.....reminds me of a more rockier, countrified Kansas....which doesn't surprise me since he was in Kansas for their POWER album, and the Album which should not be named, in honor of Dave.... Hmmmm....wonder where DD got the idea for having a violinist?

Kansas ~ Song for America (from "Live at the Whiskey")...This was recorded during the height of Walsh's drug problems and his voice is horrible but this is the most dynamic performance, musically-speaking, that I've ever heard of this song.

Kansas ~ The Pinnacle...Great vocals by Walsh here and he also puts in some pretty good organ-style keyboard work.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer ~ Karn Evil 9: 2nd Impression...I like the whole song but this is the most well-known portion.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer ~ Tarkus...Again, this is only part of the song but it's an incredible performance.

King Crimson ~ In the Court of the Crimson King

Dream Theater ~ A Change of Seasons

Rush ~ Xanadu

Rush ~ "2112"

Rush ~ La Villa Strangiato

Yes ~ Heart of the Sunrise

Yes ~ South Side of the Sky

Yes ~ Awaken

Yes ~ Close to the Edge

Yes ~ The Gates of Delirium

Yes ~ Mind Drive

Forget the "Perry Porn" thread below this one....

this is "Prog Porn Day"... and the reason I haven't provided some gems of my own just yet, is because I'm giving my ears a much-needed pleasing right now ;)

I don't last very long. I had an eargasm before the vocals even started on "The Pinnacle."

:( ;)

Still would like to get some of your input on this subject. And maybe we can get some of Andrew's choices as well.

Good to hear those again SF...

For me the most immense progressive rock track ever recorded has to be Awaken by Yes....

Part One

Part Two

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk9hxjQUbtc

And here's a classic video from one of the other pioneers... Emerson, Lake and Palmer...shot in 1977 in the Olympic stadium in Montreal I think...on the tour that nearly bankrupted them because they insisted on travelling with a 100 piece orchestra....

Good stuff there Matthew. I really dig almost all of the Yes catalog, though I must admit to being partial to the Rabin years.

ELP is really kind of hit and miss with me, but the one you have chosen here I enjoy very much.

Yes - me too SF - although I guess the band moved away from prog toward AOR during those Rabin years. The exception is probably Endless Dream isn't it? Just found this very proggy live version from the Talk tour in 1994....

"Endless Dream" is excellent and probably my favorite piece from the post-Howe era. Other than that, they are definitely mostly an AOR-type band, though there were some prog elements here and there.

I believe Rush's version predates the Olivia Newton John song of the same name.
