I drove down to Cleveland with a buddy to see Eclipse this weekend and their much heralded, and somewhat enigmatic, singer Jason Kelty. The show, in general, was fantastic. Eclipse plays all of the top 80's hits from Journey, Styx, Bon Jovi and others. "Ehwatt" and his friend Colin, and "Journey/Survivor" also attended the show.

Jason Kelty is pretty much what everyone thought he was...a fantastic singer and a seemingly even better human being. Everyone in the band seemed like really cool guys. I spoke briefly with Jason and his "speaking" voice is almost identical to Perry's from the 80's. When I told him that we came down from Chicago to see the band he looked at me like I was fucking nuts.

On to the show...they played 7 or 8 Journey songs. The sound was very good, but not great. I thought Jason's voice had a bit too much delay on it and gave it sort of an "echo" sound. It was either that or a lot of reverb. At any rate, you could hear a great voice nonetheless and he nailed every song. One thing I never seemed to see him do was really "let it go." His singing is effortless and very under control. It's obvious that the Perry-sung songs are very much in his natural range. I also thought he was a bit low in the mix and if I remember correctly the band asked for his mic to be turned up once or twice. The highlight of the night for me was Runaway by Bon Jovi. Eclipse just nailed that one and Jason's vox at the end of the song were off the chain. I saw a few jaws drop on that one! The Journey songs were all solid and the band has several good voices...Paul the bassists being one of them. He did particularly well on a Who cover.

My friend taped a good portion of the show and I hope to have some audio and/or video up sometime this week. The show was great, the venue was cool, the guys in the band were all extremely nice as were their significant others. I believe Paul said that they had only done a few shows together. Regardless, they were pretty tight and if they get any better they'll really be something to see!!! I highly recommend seeing these guys. Their music is great and they sing all of the big melodic hits of the 80's. Gonna try and get that audio/video up soon!!!

Spot on.

Paul, if you're readin out there, I don't know if it was your guys's preference for the vocal 'verb or the sound guy, but it was wayyyy too much. Definitely the biggest knock on the show - and the good news is, that doesn't even have anything to do with your guys' performance

I was just reading through the other thread. I didn't realize they were from Ohio. I am going to check them out on 1/23. They are right down the street from me!!

Dont ya hate it when a soundman does that shit... When I am in attendance and I hear that I cant help myself.. I go right to the booth and ask, "Why do the singers sound like they are in a cave?" Some soundmen use reverb to compensate for a lack of mixing skill..I did this at an Escape show back at the tiger in 96. Gus, the soundman mixed with earplugs in and had the treble WAY over the top.. He was cool and brought it back down.. I saw people remove napkin bits from their ears when he fixed it. That is how obvious it was..... Still, cant wait to hear some of the show...

I mean, we're not talking something just musicians or people who've tried to mix music would notice... like a little excessive reverb tail. We're talking DRENCHED to the point where everyone in the place could easily tell it was too much.

The band probably didnt even know.... I have been playing what I thought was a great show only to find out later that something like that was screwed up the whole time... Frustrating... I wished people would have said something to us when this happened so that at least one of us could have set the sound guy straight.

The thing is that I go there to see bands at least once every few weeks, and I had never noticed it to that extent before. Although, the guy who was behind the board Friday night is not the only sound guy there. There's another guy who I see there quite a bit who's behind the board lot's of times.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Glad that your trip was worthwhile.

You are correct in that we can't really hear house effects from the stage. I did get a good portion of the show on tape, and will youtube songs over the next couple of weeks. Fortunately, while there is more reverb than we would have liked, it could have been worse. The bigger issue was Jason's mic volume. This was our first time working with this sound guy (their other guy ran our first two shows there). I guess in his defense, we have 4 guys alternating on lead vocals, so if he is not paying really close attention (which I guess he wasn't always), that can happen. At least you can still hear him fairly well.

I will post a thread once they are up and available. I will also be adding pics to our MySpace page from our gig there last month. Hope to have those up by this weekend.

PLRR (Peace, Love, and Rock and Roll)

I bet he still gets carded. I know he's around his mid to late 30's, but had I not known I would've guessed mid 20's.

Yeah, he makes ME look old. lol

Just think, when I was in Escape with him, he was 15 years YOUNGER than he is now. He really looked young!
