One of my worst fears........

........when I used to ski. Being scared of heights doesn't help either. But I would have probably piddled my pants if I was in one of these gondola's in Whistler BC today............swinging in the sky. One of the Gondola towers tipped over, dropping the cable and gondolas several feet.....trapping around a dozen skiers and snowboarders in a few of the gondolas.

I remember being 'stuck' in the gondola at Sunshine Village (Banff, for you Yanks) for about an hour once. There was no accident or anything, the stupid thing just broke down. It was not at all fun sitting up there in the cold that far above the ground - I'm not afraid of heights but I'm definitely afraid of crashing into a mountain :) . My boyfriend-at-the-time (who was with me in the gondola car) did have a fear of heights - always thought he was kinda nuts for wanting to go skiing all the time  .

Anyway, sounds like they've all been rescued and no-one was hurt, thank goodness.

Not really much for skiing myself. My first (and last) experience ended in with a tree hugging that gave me a broken wrist and a partially messed up disk in my back (I did break right through the middle of a pretty thick wooden sign for extra points however! ) While I would be more than willing to go out and try it again (kind of the getting back on the horse deal), I just don't see the point. Even before the accident I wasn't having that much fun to justify the rentals, time, etc. I guess I just ain't an outdoorsman in general.

Never really saw the fun in it. I can just see myself flying down a hill, unable to stop and doing a "Sonny Bono" tree plant. I will pass...............

Actually the chair lifts bothered me more than the gondolas, I'm usually fine if my feet are on something, (heck, I work on the 29th floor and can look out my office window right down and it doesn't bother me, it's when my legs are dangling that the height thing bothers me. Tried the sky ride across the Stampede again last year, nope, still not a good thing.  Noticed it a few years ago on a ride in the California Adventure part of Disneyland too, you sit in this chair lift thing and you soar over orange orchards and mountains, etc. which was a pretty cool ride, but I was too concerned about my feet not touching ground, to enjoy it . I'd rather ride that elevator freefall drop in that old hotel ride I went on.....10 times more than than one. Yet soaring over the city in the delorian in the back to the future ride at Universal Studios didn't bother me at all.

I used to do a great snow plow, when I got going too fast and got nervous........LOL, for those that have never skied, that's when you point your skis together at the tip in a V shape, yep total dork.  Quit, cuz it just got to be too expensive, between rentals (if you didn't have all your own gear) and gas and time to get to the ski hills. It's not a cheap activity.

My sidekick Kathryn and her guy Martyn are headed to Whistler this Saturday.

I love to ski ... but I confess to having worried about this happening a few times when riding the lifts, especially in high winds. Must have been really terrifying for the people involved.
