Rock Band vs Guitar Hero

Postby CHELBEL » Fri Dec 19, 2008 4:56 am

I have a 15 year old daughter ... accomplished pianist ... teaching herself the electric guitar .... has expressed an interest in these games.

My question is which is the better one to get her? It seems through my limited research that musicians and bands seem to endorse "Rock Band".

Who better than the crew here at MR to educate me!!

What's the difference between the two?

I heard Slash saying not too long ago that Guitar Hero doesn't teach you anything about music or rhythym. It teaches you how to look at lights and hit coloured keys in resonse to visual stimuli. Kind of retarded when you think about it (entertaining though!) ... I dont know about Rock Band.

I would say if you want to help your daughter on the electric guitar. take her to lots of gigs have her watch the experts, learn some tricks, and be inspired by what she sees. That s what the greats all did.

As a musician, I really don't like either since it's not like playing the real thing, at least guitar-wise. My experience playing it was much like that video of Rush playing Rock Band - bad.

I do like them in the sense that they are sparking interest in music as a whole, but the experience (IMO) leaves something to be desired.

Everybody can play in Rock band, you'll just spend more on the different instruments but if you want be an activate participant with her then it's the way to go.

Edited because I confused my thens and thans.

Guitar Hero is currently the more popular choice at retail.

I'm told that neither of the games will actually help her with playing the real guitar.

She's mastering that by herself and with the help of a couple of you tube clips ... she's got Lincoln Park down ... I'm so proud of her.

Anyway, I'm rambling ... thanx so much for your input!! I knew you'd come thru!

Here's what I really wanna know ...

Postby CHELBEL » Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:45 am

... is the instrumentation different.

I mean if she can play one of them will the other one be just as easy to master and vice versa?

I have Rockband and had GH. Go Rockband, it has a helleva lot more songs and IMO it's easier. Plus the DLC if you have a 360 is a lot better.

Rockband is a lot more fun --better scoring rules (you can bail out ailing bandmates mid-song)
However, it DETRACTS from actually learning to play any of the instruments represented, even drums.
I used to play the drums, and still mess around with my geeee-tarr from time to time.
Buy it for the fun factor, not for any educational benefit.

My son is 15 and doing the same thing! It is fun to watch them and watch how it's such a natural talent for them to be able to have an ear like that.

It's true it really doesn't help them with real guitar, but my son loves playing the games anyway. I agree with Behshad though. We had rock band and recently got the newest Guitar Hero World Tour. They like using Rock Band 1 and 2 with the guitar hero intruments. You can use the RB games with the GH stuff. They love the guitar hero drums. They have cymbals so it's more challenging a little more realistic. You could always get the Guitar Hero intruments and game and then buy the Rock Band 1 and 2 , games only, at a later time to use with it. It's really fun to play with them too. I usually end up on the microphone though

RB and GH are pretty much the same game now, I don't know why people "endorse" one and not the other.

Honestly I would choose based on whichever song list I liked more cause that's the biggest difference these days.

So does GH III

But we're not talking about GH3 as it's not comparable to World Tour or Rock Band.

Also it costs extra to get AWYWI on GH3 and you have to have Xbox/PS3. (I have a PS2)

We have both of them and they are both fun. Rock band is more fun if you have alot of people to play since you can have guitar, bass, singer and drums.
