A new study carried out by researchers in Australia has found that head banging can seriously damage your health.
Two researchers from the University of New South Wales found in a study of head-banging that participants are at increased risk of not just muscle damage but of brain damage and strokes.
After attending gigs by artists such as Ozzy, Motorhead and Skid Row they studied the relationships between tempo, range of head movements and the various risks of brain injury.
They found that the risk of injury was increased as songs passed 130bpm, while they identified the average speed of the ideal head-banging song to be 146bpm while the maximum angle of head-banging should be 75o before the risk of injury increases. They also identified the two most famous head-bangers as being cartoon characters Beavis & Butthead.
Here’s their advice, as published in the British Medical Journal
“To minimise the risk of head and neck injury, head bangers should decrease their range of head and neck
nextmotion, head bang to slower tempo songs by replacing heavy metal with adult oriented rock, only head bang to every second beat, or use personal protective equipment.”So if you just get rid of those Motorhead albums and invest in a neck-brace then you’ll be fine.
