Bizarre foods...

Postby G.I.Jim » Fri Dec 19, 2008 11:45 pm

Just got to thinking this morning about this topic, and it really got me curious. We're all from different places around the globe, and I wonder if there are any "adventurous" eaters in here?

What's the wierdest thing you can recall eating? I tried a cow tongue taco earlier this year that wasn't too bad. I also tried a soup that was made from Tripe (cow stomache). It didn't taste too bad, but the texture was a little wierd. How about you?

Tripe is good, if cooked right!

Dog stew was... interesting. Not that I knew it was dog when I first tried it.

Calf hooves boiled until they go soft and jelly-like, and seasoned - just weird!

Deep fried scorpions is probably the weirdest. Crunchy and not especially tasty.
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

Damn...where did you go to eat dog? The calf hooves thing is just nasty! I'd try the scorpion though.

In a Malaysian restaurant run by Chinese in Indonesia. My Dad ordered for me, then refused to tell me what it was - instant alarm bells ringing! The calf hooves was surprisingly tasty - like very firm aspic. The scorpions were kind of bland but crunchy and unpleasantly gooey inside.

I like what's common and am satisfied eating Monster Tacos from Jack In The Box, or The Giant Roast Beef sandwich from Arby's or a Jalapeno Double Cheeseburger from Sonic. Or I'll get on a health kick once in a while and have a Turkey and Ham from Subway. But every great once in a while, I'll go to a little hole in the wall Chinese restaurant here in town and get the Sechuan(sp) Chicken with fried rice. :D I know, I'm a wild man.

I love that show....my pregnant wife however can't bear to look at it.

Did anyone see the show in Goa India where a nude Andrew Zimmern fell off his chair in the massage parlor?

I can't believe they left that in there!!

I very very literally just got nauseous reading that.
I have a paralyzing, tear inducing fear of bugs.

Weirdest I can recall having would be ostrich burger (it was good though!) and also alligator meat.

I sometime eat a peanut butter sandwich with Fritos on it and a lot of people think that's weird too, though, so I guess its all up to what a person considers "weird".

Ostrich is great! Other than that, I'm a pretty picky/non-adventurous eater so I can't think of too many crazy things I've eaten. I don't even like putting dressing or mayo on a sub. Deep fried scorpions sounds fucking nasty

Me too, I can hold a snake, but go nuts around spiders. A friend of my ex used to have snakes and a trantula, years ago........and I quickly lost my fear of snakes after handling a couple.....but you couldn't get me within 3 feet of that trantula.

I think the wierdest thing I've eaten is breaded, fried prairie oysters. They didn't taste too bad, but after finding out what they were, no thanks.

I'm pretty open minded to trying different foods. I haven't had "Rocky-mountain" oysters or anything like that, but I'd probably try it. It's amazing to me what one culture may look at as taboo, that another may eat on a daily basis and not think anything about it. I guess it's all a matter of what you grew up around and what you're comfortable with.

Rocky-mountain or prairie, called the same thing. But you're right, I'm sure most people would like them, they taste just like a meat ball. I guess it's mind over matter, and my mind just can't get past the fact that it's a bull's nut.

Snakes are fine as long as you know what you're doing and basic knowledge about the difference between them (i.e. pythons vs. boas vs. rattlers, etc. You're obviously an idiot if you pick up a snake you know nothing about  ).

But show me a spider, bee, fly, beetle, etc. and I lose my mind.

I hated that show Fear Factor, when they were eating worms and creepy-crawlies.
I can't even look at that on TV, nevermind anywhere near me. BLARGH!

I hear ya, same here.......especially beetles or any hardshelled creepy crawler like that. :? Can probably blame that one on a stupid show I saw when I was a kid......I think it was Tales from the Crypt or some show like that......where one episode had some guy's home totally invaded and attacked by cockroaches. Creepy!

No joke... roaches (or any kind of big ass beetle) make me cry. Bad.

To keep it on topic... those dare devil shows where people eat them or get locked in a box with them...
omg, I have to turn it off or leave the room. Can't even look at that.

Butterfly = bug

I mind them less than other creepies. Butterflies are pretty to look at as long as they stay 5 or more feet away from me. If one lands on me or flutters by my face, heaven help him.

The weirdest thing I have ever eaten was definitely pussy. I know I know, call me crazy, but it depends on freshness. Some are really clean and sweet and "in date" while others somehow taste crunchy, bitter and sour with a dusting of curdled yeast. I try to get the freshest in town, but sadly haven't been able to sample any for a long long time.

I have found that you can add to the flavour with chocolate syrup and Redi whip. Those two really mask the sometimes odorous air that emanates from a raw stenchy clam.
