Back in 2004 (3 years after I stopped freelancing for Journey), I quit my job working as a programmer. I had enough of the industry. The writing was on the wall. Outsourcing was eating the programming industry from the inside and it was time to change careers. It was time to get off the bus.

Despite being depressed and uninspired, I started at Stony Brook University in the summer of '04 to finish a bachelors degree I never completed. I was completely unsure of what I was going to study. Nothing sucks more than being 32, and not having a fucking clue what to do with your life.

With some luck and and some divine help, I took a required accounting class in early 05...and fell in love with the subject. I discovered it came naturally to me, and decided to major in Business Management with a specialization in accounting, which was the closest thing to an accounting major at SBU. In doing so, I accepted the fact that I was going to have to do additional school after graduating...just to collect enough accounting credits to be able to sit for the CPA exam. I graduated from SBU in may of 2007 and dove right into Hofstra University in the summer of 07, to pursue a Masters in Accounting.

Well, this past thursday, I graduated from Hofstra with an MS in Accounting.....what sucked about graduation, was that my grades from this past semester (including the grade for my fall thesis project) was not yet posted. Nothing like sapping the shit out of a celebration in not knowing whether or not you've passed your classes.

Tonight, the last grade was posted...and it's now safe to celebrate, as the fat lady has most certainly sung. You get to laugh at my goofy ass wearing a dress and a funny hat. For now, this is the best picture I can throw at you guys, as the photography company wants me to actually fucking pay them before I get a better resolution picture.



Regardless....thats it! I'm done with school forever.

I start a regional CPA firm in early january and I start studying for the CPA exam this spring with hopes of taking the first section in july.



Now, if you'll excuse me, the fat lady has sung...and I need to get so fucking drunk in celebration....that I will likely be propositioning my neighbors nativity scene by 2am!

Quick question though. When you stumble over to the Nativity scene, who are you going to proposition? Mary, a Wise Man, a poor assed shephard, or one of the fuckin barnyard animals hanging around for the big moment to arrive? I had to play the goddamned donkey in the church play when I was 7. Hated that shit. I was missing the Laker game, and wanted out of there so bad I faked being sick and pissed on the church stage. Needless to say, I got the Hell out of there, went home and watched Jerry West drop 44 on the Bricks. I hated fuckin church. Hell, here I come!

NICE JOB! I hope to start a similar thread in about a year and a half...except knowing me, I won't be done forever, I'll just get another wild idea in a year or so and get another degree.....I do that from time to time!

Congrats on graduating... I was 35 when I finished Iowa State working full time
and going ot school at night that was back in 1996...nothing felt better than putting on that cap and gown...

Congrats on the degree! It takes a lot of time and financial commitment to complete. I hope it pays off for you. I finished my masters degree last spring after starting back at 38. It feels great to be done!

Thanks....speaking to being scary/imtimidating....It was and it wasn't. Kinda hard to explain...

Nothing made me feel older than competing with people 19-21 years old. It really amplified my age....and that initially was intimidating.

HOWEVER, it quickly became an asset. Being 12-15 years older than the students I was going to class with forced me to remain steadfast and mature in the classroom. Then, appearing heads and shoulders above the rest of the students in terms of maturity/knowledge/willingness to learn, in the eyes of the professors became dreadfully simple. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. In your 30s, you have a perspective on these topics that 20 year olds will never have....and when you involved yourself in classroom discussions, the professors completely appreciated that.

I will also add that while the rest of the class was going out 4-5 days a week and getting piss drunk and worrying about girls, booze, getting laid, etc...I was home raising my children and studying. School gets tremendously easy when you're not concerning yourself with the bullshit that happens in college, and just going to class and churning out your work.


So yes, initially, i was scared to death. But after a few semesters, it was fun to really excel and repeatedly beat out the smartest little nerd twats for top grades.

Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment! I finished my masters in 1998 while working full time, and it was not easy! I was glad, however, that I didn't just continue going to school right after my bachelor's because the work and life experiences were incredibly beneficial.
