I don't know whether to go with a docking type station with CD player and speakers so that his IPOD can stay charging or a nice stereo shelf system with an IPOD jack. I want to get something that doesn't sound like a transistor radio, but isn't going to cost a fortune. Any tips?

The iPod dock is portable, whereas the stereo hookup isn't. However, the stereo hookup will sound infinitely better. Those iPod docks are ridiculously expensive for what you get in terms of sound quality. Everything for the iPod seems to be expensive.

Yep- and if you can find the cheaper docks, they sound like crap! Trust me on that one...

Get him one of those 200 dollars Panasonic boom boxes with an Ipod port.

Spend a few minutes and read the reviews on this iPod dock

I have two myself and it really is the best sounding out there for the price. My vote is for a dock because of portability. I even take this thing on long trips and play it using its rechargeable batteries.
