At this point USC and Utah have as much of a case for a national championship as Florida, Oklahoma or Texas. If Texas wins tonight they will have a case. Whoever wins Florida or Oklahoma will have a case. There is no championship and that’s just the way it is.

Let’s say 100% of people believe Florida belongs….. If they win they cannot be champs because they have not beaten Texas, Utah, or USC. These teams cannot be champs because they did not beat Florida. Split it four ways. That is the only fair way in this scenario.

I would argue Utah because they are unbeaten, but people can’t get past the conference. Remember when UNLV dominated college basketball for 15+ years???? In that time they had 4 final fours and a national championship where they beat Duke by over 30 points??? Remember that they played in the Big West. This was a truly lower level conference yet the Runnin’ Rebels were rewarded for their play on the court. Out of conference they scheduled anybody that would give a home and home and they beat the best of the best for years. Well in football Utah scheduled some quality opponents that had down year. Football schedules are laid out years in advance. I would hazard a guess Florida knew that Citadel was not going to be good. I don’t care how good the SEC is they should never schedule a I-AA school.

My belief is that the same argument to put one-loss Florida in over one-loss Alabama was that Florida beat Alabama, is the same argument being used against Texas. One-loss Texas beat one-loss Oklahoma. And conference championships mean nothing to the BCS hence Nebraska lost to K-state and did not win the Big 12, but went to the national championship game.

And Gator to use your own logic against you, you said that even though Utah beat Alabama, that Alabama is still the better team. If Florida beats Oklahoma some may argue the same against Florida and still no truth.

I understand you are a fan and respect that, but you cannot be blind to the facts that the system is broken and zero truth can come from this system. Enjoy that your team keeps getting picked and enjoy what I think will be a helluva game. Blind fanaticism is useless.

If we had a playoff system I believe Florida would have more Championships than they currently have. But this is the reality that we have to deal with and I feel no more guilty for the Gators being in this game than Pete Carroll, Kyle Whittingham, or Mack Brown would feel if they "lucked out" and got in. If Utah wants to get into BCS Championship games then they need to join a BCS Conference. Why not jump over to the Pac 10?
I certainly agree that Texas deserves an argument for this game. But they did NOT win their conference championship, end of that story. USC has the least to Bitch about. They will not play a conference championship game and the Pac10 is against a playoff. If they played the Conference Championship then maybe their rankings would have jumped up enough to get in thje game. Its not other teams fault that USC was ranked out of the top 5. And how do we know Florida or Oklahoma wouldnt beat any of those 3 teams anyway.

When the PAC-8 decided to expand to the PAC-10 they chose Arizona and ASU over BYU and Utah. It is not up to the schools which conference they are in. The conference has to choose them and then they can accept. The Mountain West schools are in the best non-BCS conference out there and unfortunately none of the BCS conferences want to expand. And I don’t think they should. The Big 12, ACC and SEC are too big already. Throw the Big 10 in there too. It is a joke that they don’t play everybody in their own conference every year. Having a conference is to establish who the best team is over a balanced schedule. The year Florida throttled Ohio State in the BCS game Ohio State did not play Iowa who was undefeated in their conference. And in the record books Iowa is the Big 10 champ that year. Ohio State was not the Big 10 champ last year and were in the BCS game. Nebraska did not win their conference a few years ago and went to the BCS game and won. National Champs but not Big 12 champs?

Texas did not win their conference because of the BCS! So you can’t say “end of story” for their argument for the title game. Their conference takes the highest rated school in the BCS to the conference championship game in the event of a tie. That is how Oklahoma got in not on true merit. Again I am not saying that Texas should be in, but they have as much right as the other teams. Every other conference with a championship game would have had Texas in because, their rules, in a three way tie is to eliminate the lowest BCS School. In this case Texas Tech would have been eliminated. Then head to head with the last two schools. In this case Texas. This is the SEC’s rule as well.

When you have such a large conference the championship games make sense. Not so much with smaller conferences. In the PAC-10 the championship would not have mattered or the Big-10. The competition would not have been strong enough to sway voters or the computers.

It is great that Florida’s president is for a playoff, but if it is an exclusionary playoff then who cares. In an eight team playoff Utah would have been left out because even though they were 6 in the BCS the automatic bids put them as the 9th team selected for the BCS. A 16 team playoff is the way to go. 4 weeks of great football. The big conferences have the best teams, and I recognize that but they have to include all of Division I-A. Even if the smaller conferences like the Mountain West and WAC share an automatic bid and have a championship game for it.

And lucked out is good way to put it. Because Florida lost early instead of late is one of the reasons they were able to climb. Preseason polls kept Utah out. Florida is great and I picked them to beat OU and I think Tebow should have won the Heisman Trophy, but in the end it is a great book with a lousy last chapter that no one, including the winner, of the BCS game should be happy with.
