Caught Arnel on TV twice today:

With (local) rock figures on ASAP '09's RockXpress segment...he sings Faithfully halfway through this clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtvYy03nEeQ (I hope the show does away with annoying superlatives  )

On The Singing Bee..."Arnel Pineda"--supposedly of Journey--singing, well... :x :

Culture clash right here?

What Arnel is doing is par for the course on the Philippine music scene.
Big-names covering the songs of other big names in one-offs is just as normal there, 'innit?
We Filipinos love karaoke and hit medleys, as one-offs, LOL...

It all boils down to this: Arnel had and has a music career separate from Journey.
In much the same manner that Arnel isn't becoming a US citizen, or moving away from
his old lifestyle --he likely isn't going to change his attitude towards singing here in the Philippines.

He's NEVER going to be your ideal of a Journey lead vocalist, just like
he's never going to be a stereotype American rock star.

Most likely. I think Arnel singing karaoke will dumb down his newly-found celebrity status. That's just my opinion. I'm sure the fans in his home country will accept whatever he does because he is their star, not Journey. On this side of the fence we have seen our home boys in Journey go from singer to singer. So hearing that the latest singer is singing a Guns N Roses karaoke song does nothing to help build his legacy as a lead singer of a major rock band. To me it reeks of "You can take the boy away from the karaoke, but you can't take the karaoke out of the boy".

That's bullshit. He can be as accepted as he wants to be (and has been) given the shoes (and voice) he is trying to fill. That has absolutely nothing to do (nor do the cultural differences) with the fact that those two clips make him look very amateurish.

Wech and Voyager, you both hit the nail on the head. That is exactly how it will be perceived for the most part depending on who you are.

But to add to that, casual Journey fans in the U.S. won't even know about all of his side work singing covers in the Phils. They will show up to next year's concert just to enjoy Journey music and whatever other band is touring with them.

Exactly. But the rumours that start on message boards like this one tend to permeate back into society. Eventually word gets around to the general public just like it did when Arnel was first discovered.

While I tend to agree with you, I will say that the message board effect has been limited in it's scope to society. The GP knows more about what is going on based on what high-profile media is giving them. CBS, The Ellen Show all of that, whether it's liked or not, will have more viewership than there will be members of a message board. That's reality.

What AP's doing is par for the course back home in the PI. Just because he now sings for Journey doesn't mean that he must cease and desist from doing anything else.

I enjoy what I'm seeing/hearing from Arnel. It's refreshing to see that he's the same humble guy he was last year. He would've done these variety shows last year and he's doing them this year. He has always maintained that he's primarily here to celebrate the Journey legacy and he understands that the 80's era Journey will always be the most listened to incarnation. You'd need an electron microscope to find this guy's ego. He's simply a man doing what he wants and feels comfortable with, and he doesn't care how he's viewed. I'd say that's extremely rare in the industry he's in. Couple that with the charity work he's done and the foundation he's started up, and I see a guy that's a heck of a human being.

How we accept or reject something differently is a matter of cultural difference.
Arnel's got no problem picking up a Magic Sing for a quick karaoke hit on some street corner.
He'll sing anything from Led Zep to David Pomeranz, and doing it on a TV show is just an issue of wattage.

Many of us Filipinos enjoy that carefree/informal sort of stuff, and it's apparent that many of you Americans don't.
What you think looks amateurish looks just fine to us (and some of what you think is cool might be laughable to us).
We have a lot in common, but there ARE cultural differences between us.

If you dislike what you're seeing of Arnel on Philippine TV, then I rest my case, and repeat it:
he's never going to be your ideal of a Journey lead, or your ideal of an American rock star.
He's not Perry, Augeri, JSS, Hunsicker, or any other American vocalist either.
He's Arnel, and it looks like he's just being Arnel.

The fact is I think he sounds and looks horrible in those clips. It's not just that it looks amateurish. I was trying to actually be nice in regards to what I thought of his performance. It has nothing to do with whether I accept him doing karaoke singing or not. Yes, I think he looks like a fool. But I will take your word that he doesn't care, and is comfortable with that type of performance. Good for him. I still love his work with Journey.

But that doesn't change my opinion that I think his performance in the posted clips is below sub par from what I've seen of him previously.

He is definitely a tremendous human being. I just pulled out Revelation this weekend after three months of not hearing it. It reminded me of what an amazing voice he has. Like A Sunshower and TDTWT really showcase the tone of his voice.

I accept Arnel on Phils TV. I'm not big on him doing covers instead of Journey or original songs, but that's another part of his life and culture, and is unique to Journey hiring a Filipino singer. If Journey doesn't have a problem, I don't either.

But having said that, two-thirds of the videos I've seen have showcased his excellent voice, but I agree, the other third are average performances vocally. I'm a huge fan and supporter of Arnel's, but I won't deny that. I'm also worried about his accent. I hear it coming through on some of his performances. He needs to start working on diction again b/f the tour.

You were reacting as you did to my post, and clearly objecting to what Arnel's doing.
That's clearly indicative that, to your mind, he's not behaving ideally.

Hey, there...
I have been one of the steadiest critics of Arnel's pronunciation and remain so, for the sake of better
"memory-lane" rendition of Journey classics, and for better between-numbers interaction with the
live audiences there in the US. It's meant to be constuctive criticism though, and I'll take what I can get.
I may be pushing for improvement, but I'm grateful for what Arnel has provided so far.

:)

Hey, Wech. I haven't seen you around much. As you know, he worked with a speech coach last year, and I thought he was great in interacting with the audience and singing in the 2008 tour. Whatever traces were evident were so mild as to be unimportant when singing, if noticeable at all. And his accent when interacting with the audience is fine. I don't expect him to sound like an American, but it was definitely a huge improvement from Zoo videos. He sounded great on Revelation. But I've noticed a backslide these months in the Philippines in some of his songs on video. Faithfully and Open Arms; he was perfect on that. He's a true professional. I'm sure he'll put the right amount of work he needs into it for the tour coming up, but I worry that being in his homeland that he doesn't notice the difference. It's been very noticeable to me on some of the songs on the videos.

Lea Salonga is the only the only Filipino/Filipina that I consider a bonafide international star (being a Tony award winner is the difference, along with acting in American Movies and TV shows). You could mention her name to a group of Americans, Japanese or Europeans and chances are, some one will know who she is. No accent at all in her singing. I know it is hard to overcome diction issues in regular speech but in singing, with a lot of hard work, it can be done.

i believe Arnel is having a great time performing on Philippine Television.
he didnt have this exposure when he was still with the Zoo and is loving it.

i agree with onestepper.
he is with journey and should at least perform as one.

That's a filipina, not some lady boy from Thailand. I'll put a new one, Carla Maria, (a true LBFM).
I've been all over Thailand, but I prefer filipinas, at least they can speak english, not that there will be much talking going on.
