You think so? This is in the Philippines though... where only a handful of artists make it big internationally. Arnel is arguably the biggest Philippine born and bred artist the country has ever produced.

It's an Olongapo thing --"the hometown boy done good" sort of a deal.
...and yes: it's overkill. This sort of gimmick wouldn't fly in Quezon City.

"Arnel Pineda, the new vocalist of the world famous rock band Journey, was welcomed by Olongapeños, led by City Mayor James ‘Bong’ Gordon Jr."

Says it all really.

Pinoys love doorbell sounding nicknames. Everybody knows a Ding, a Dong, a Bing, a Bong, a Ting, or a Ping. Some go a step further by combining them: bing-bing, dingdong, etc.

With one former basketball player & at least one former starlet as councillors, and this dude as your vice mayor, I can see that Quezon City hates gimmickry indeed

well hell, Rocky got a statue.

I guess if they wanted to put a statue up of me I suppose I would let them. I mean, birds need a place to sit!

I will try to explain. Although there are a lot of talented artists in the Philippines, alas they don't get any international exposure/recognition and they end up working abroad singing in bars or performing "cultural dances" in Japan. In almost everything, we have always been the whipping boys. A good example is sports in which we have never had an Olympic gold medal or in basketball (our un-official national sport) where our national team regularly get their ass kicked by teams they used to beat. I think this is the reason why we are desperate to have somebody that will inspire us. This is what Manny Pacquiao has done in sports and Arnel Pineda in music. Both will soon have statues erected in the Philippines to remind the Pinoys that there is hope if you persevere.

...I'm sure Wech can explain better

No. That it's constantly used as the reasoning behind stuff. Just saying that I don't think everything he does has to always be about the culture. It's not a slame on him or anything else.

Seems clear to me so I don't get why anyone else would not understand it..although I think statues of people are kinda silly anywhere personally...it is understandable for someone to be looked on for inspiration, hope and pride for others...this is not unique to the Philipines so it isn't a cultural difference at all..we have statues of people all over the United States....even of singers...one of Buddy Holly in Lubbock Texas comes to mind.

Same reasoning...still don't get it, but not criticizing it. I have passed this sign many times.

...the key to understanding some of the stuff he does is to understand the culture. but then again as what Lula said, you don't have to.
