OT: SHOULD JOURNEY RECORD THIS?

Even though it's not Arnel's song, or an original song, I was just wondering if Journey should try doing something with it -- same form, just a richer arrangement/instrumentation...

Go for it. Hell, I don't care if they make a whole album of Filipino love songs, as long as it's not more fucking retreads.

Beautiful song, but the last thing Journey needs is another ballad. Find something a bit more hard core, and let's see the magic between guitar and vocals rocking out become something that makes Journey unique again.

I'd have to say NO.
It's OK but nothing special.
I don't like the flow.
It is boring & it doesn't hold my interest.
I just don't feel anything except wishing it would end the pain in my head.

:(

Journey covering a song by the Zoo?! I'm sensing irony. Or insanity :P

Journey needs to knock it out of the ballpark with their next CD and when you compare this
song to a ballad like 'Faithfully' or 'Open Arms', it just isn't the same caliber. Typical lyrics,
rather flat, no takeoffs. This would just be filler on the disc and could you imagine this in concert?
It would put Neal to sleep!

Any ballad Journey does really should have a solid vocal takeoff and a good solo for Neal,
like 'Who's Crying Now'. Otherwise, I don't think it will go anywhere, they won't play it
in concert and then what's the point?

That was some tidbit. Didn't realize that the song wasn't even originally recorded by Zoo...albeit composed by the band's guitarist.

I've listened to this song b/f when Arnel has done it. He sounds great and sings it with emotion, but I agree with everything SherriBerry said: The song is pretty, but does seem rather flat, never builds to anything, never takes me anywhere. It just seems to go on too long. I always eventually lose interest by two-thirds of the way. Doesn't seem like a Journey ballad, like Faithfully or Turn Down The World Tonight.

Should Journey Record 'Pain in My Heart'?

They already did. 3 times.

1) Red 13
2) Generations
3) Revelation

The days of the Rock Ballad are over. WYLAW was the last Journey Ballad to make the top 40 (#8). Don't even start with that A/C chart crap. Journey should go balls to the wall and rock out on their next album. They are labeled as a Rock Band, although AATY did put them perilously close to country music. They didn't release their premier ballad off of Revelation (TDTWT), so why even go in that direction anymore. AC/DC has no ballads on their new album, and they went double platinum in two months. Time for Journey to return to their roots and be a bonafide rockband again.

Voted no, they need to get back to being creative and stop using their previous or other people's work to fill an album.

Especially what I think is going to be their last original release.

Ari, that would be a big, hell, yeah. :D

Actually, Arnel said Neal wanted to do more rock on the next CD and that he agreed with Neal.

Thank God. I need a minimum of three more rocking albums from Journey before they can even consider retirement. And despite what the naysayers say, Cain can put out some serious rock songs. "Separate Ways" is one of their heaviest songs and Neal had nothing to do with writing it.

He's co-written pretty much every rock song that the band has churned out, with few exceptions. Ballads might be Cain's bread and butter, but he can write rock as well as Neal or Perry.

And there hasn't been a memorable one in the bunch. His time has passed. If Journey were a horse with a broken leg...............

There hasn't been a memorable rock song since SW? That's an interesting perspective, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Back then he had a singer who could help him create the melody as he was writing. Just putting words on paper is only half the job. With the exception of NWA, most of Revelation seems to have been written with out any vocalist on hand to adjust the pacing of the songs and other small fine tuning items. What we have is a sort of "one size fits all" songwriting.

I suppose I'm not nearly as nuanced on this material as you are, because I'm not picking up these discrepencies. While Cain's output hasn't been nearly as great as when he collaborated with both Perry and Schon, I'd say he's actually done a helluva job on the rockers and ballads that he's written/co-written. Neal and Jon have both done really well and I think Revelation has some amazing gems on it in terms of both writing and structure.

And then I take a look at FtLoSM and there are some songs with enough credits on it to fill a football stadium and it still didn't help with the lackluster song quality.

FLTOSM is just a mess. Cain and Perry in the same room could create magic. Apart they both leave something to be desired. Bringing in Blades helped the songwriting department for Journey. But when it's just Neal and John only. Well top 40 hits seem to be lacking a bit.Even withoutPerry having writing credits on Faithfully, just himbeingthereto help develop the bridge andother parts of the song was a plus. FTLOSM has Brewster all over the credits. The guy writes warship music and it shows.
