I was just telling Rick in another thread that I was spoiled because I first saw Journey live in 78 and 79. To me, this was the best era as far as Steve's voice and the music that Journey created. I know that some have never seen Journey live or have different eras that are the best for them. This is my Journey, feel free to post yours.

Damn dude, I love all those songs. Just The Same Way is probably my all time favorite song they ever did, but I play all those songs frequently.

My favorite era is Escape, but there are so many songs from so many albums that I just absolutely love, that it's difficult to pick a favorite era.

My solution to that is, to post my favorite Journey songs of all time. And those are these. And I think they're chronological, for the most part.

I straddle both sides. On the one hand, there were some incredible vocal moments during the pre-Escape days. The duets with Perry and Rolie were pretty much four minute audiogasms. And who can forget the badass jam session at the end of "Winds of March"?

That said, the songwriting sucked. Completely. Totally. Irretrievably. No, sorry, Cain really kicked the lyrics into gear. And I'm the type of listener who looks at all aspects of the craftsmanship of the song. Not to mention that there were even more powerhouse songs than the Rolie era. So, yeah. 80s era Journey > 70s era Journey, though Perry had some really kickass vocals in either one.

I think they "rocked" in different ways. Rolie was more of a "fusion" rocker and Cain is more of a "pop rock" rocker...if that makes any sense. :lol:

Cain is responsible for the most recognizable keyboard riff in music history...the intro to DSB. And their highest charting song, Open Arms, also has the Jon Cain stamp at the very beginning of the song. As does Separate Ways, When You Love A Woman and Faithfully (to name a few). Love him or hate him, the man is great at what he does musically.

I think Cain gets snubbed too much; no one seems to really appreciate that the songwriting improved dramatically and that Journey rocked harder than ever. Gregg may have been more of a "fusion rocker", but none of the '70s shit rocks as hard as "Separate Ways" or "Edge of the Blade" or what have you. So while he brought more ballads to the table, he also rocked harder than Gregg ever did.

On the DVD I felt sorry for Arnel having to come back out and follow Deen after he performed Mother Father, b/c that song and performance rocked, and then Arnel came out singing Wildest Dreams, Revelation's heaviest rocker, very high energy. I loved the performance and the energy between Neal and Arnel. Great song choice to follow Mother Father.

I wasn't alive for the Steve Perry Journey days, and although I saw them once with Jeff and once with Arnel, the Steve Perry era is still #1 for me. I just love the man's voice, plain and simple!

I jumped on the fanwagon only in 2005 after discovering Steve Perry singing on the WeAreTheWorld 20th Anniv dvd. "My Journey" is the SP eras. Some good songs came after, to be sure, but none has the mystique of a SP-sung song (imo).

I do agree with SJ and Gideon that the songs got better with Jon in the mix. No slight meant for Gregg, though, I love his voice, too.

For what it is worth...

Infinity-Evolution-Departure-Captured.

Enjoy what followed...but these are "Journey" to me. What followed was a "Baby" version of Journey pardon the pun, regardless of their commercial success.

The songs were not cookie cutter. The way the guitar and vocals played off each other were much more complex and entertaining. Having two singers provided depth and variety. The harmonizing was unique as well. The jams were better...listen to Wheel in the Sky. Especially live, Neal is going going off, the rest of the guys are doing their thing...and then you add a little Perry to the mix.

If I were only given one Journey album I could listen to, it would be one of those four, of which I'd have a hard time picking.
