That was the first entire song I'd seen Arnel sing and I have to say I was much less than impressed. What really creeped me out was the way he kept rolling his eyes backwards!!!

I've read everyone's comments about how good he was during the tour and was expecting a decent performance. IMO this wasn't it. Unfortunate that if this was just an off night it had to be during national coverage.

I think he looked scared. I also wonder if they prepared him enough after the break he had. And it wasn't like he wasn't hitting notes or singing well. To me it was almost like he changed the whole song to his own style instead of going the "SP sound alike" route. It wasn't horrible, but I did see them several times prior to this, and it wasn't near the same performance. I prefer what I saw last year and I have confidence they will get there.

Can't say as i did not know they would be on.

It really wasn't a good performance, and what makes it so disappointing is they are capable of better.

Did they ever advertise? I only heard they'd be on because of this board and by the time I got our power back on from the ice storm, read this board and found out, then went to find them on TV, I think they'd already played.

I voted awful. I had to turn it off, so that's really not a good sign. You can't get up at the Superbowl and do that to "Don't Stop Believin'". Its pretty clear how many people absolutely love that song, based on the kind of attention and success it has had in the last few years. Its an American anthem at this point.

It was a train wreck. I hope the next singer gets hired soon.

It was a good performance, not great. Like I said b/f, the ten people watching it here who are only casual Journey fans thought he was good.

When was it even on? I was watching for it but never saw them.

Are they still around? It sucked, Faga should of stayed on the keys, they were more important than that little shitty guitar part he played, he was just playin what Ross was playin. Vocals really sucked, I hope they get there shit together, they wont get through this summer sounding like that

Awwww, the Arnel honeymoon period appears to be over.. It wasnt that bad really and everyone seems to be really hard on the performance. Sound quality and mix didnt help at all. When was the last time any band at any sport event had a good mix ? Arnel under the weather ? Seems like he cant stay well if that is the case...

I saw it in HD on the internet and it sounded better than some of these clips on here soundwise. I don't get where people are saying awful. Believe me, I've seen awful performances on the Super Bowl pregame before or even haltime show, and this wasn't even close.

I thought it was fine, not great, but fine. Arnel's rolling his eyes back into his head thing was kind of creepy though. He needs to cut that shit out. :)

Excuses, excuses. It had nothing to do with the mix or illness. Pineda is just wrong for the band.

In your opinion...JSS was far worse with the band for the first two months he toured. He was much better after that but he was far from perfect.

You know, I agree with Jana. But I will add it was not as awful as it was different. I think that is the problem I have with it. He did it SO off base from the original to me, and I just think that is a mistake with SUCH an anthem song like that. That's how I saw it. I felt he was singing fine, but he wasn't singing it the way we are used to hearing it.

Behshad has the option of "They should've prepared better." Um, no. The band was fine, if not really solid. Pineda is the problem. His lack of professionalism in the fact he was in San Diego the night before singing and then flying cross country in a flu-tube, and just showing up is a slap in the face of Journey. I can tell you right now, and I feel I can speak for Jeff, but he would respect his Journey job a helluva lot more than to sing on Super Bowl eve, let alone on the opposite fucking coast. I remember him not even talking to me at times when he had a gig coming up. He would nod and whisper rather use up his chords. This one is on Pineda and I would be shocked if he doesn't get sat down for some serious ass chewing. Friga and Schon will read this board, and they are smart enough to weed out the Arnel onlies cheerleading posts and see that Pineda's performance just may have cost them a serious future. I saw the whole set, and he was terrible the entire time. Way to take your new gig seriously. If I was Castronovo I would slap that little weed's face.

The bottom line is that it looks like he just wasn't prepared, or needed some rehearsal time after the time off. To just wing in and do that show from the seat of his pants was stupid. I'm baffled that the band/management let AP do that. Maybe they don't care enough to do anything about it, but that in itself is just as disappointing.

Why was Arnel in CA? Was he singing with Journey the night before?

OK, I watched it on YouTube because I missed the live TV airing last night. I was lucky enough to only have to put up with the 4th Qtr, which to me, was a win-win!

Anyway... Although YouTube seldomly has the "best" audio out there, and we do not know if they had any control over their own sound in the first place, I still felt like the performance was lacking and showed poor preparation/execution. Sure, they may not have been given a "proper" soundcheck but that does not excuse the band, especially Arnel, for not preparing and warming up on their own before arriving for their performance. I'm sure they knew that they were getting limited time on stage, so there is no room for error, IMO. They are supposedly professionals at this point, so I refuse to cut them any slack by making excuses that they needed to warm up and find their groove. Bullshit! If you are hired to perform, in any setting/capacity, you prepare to be able to hit the ground running on the first (and often, only) shot! This performance was to be seen by millions tuning in, as well as those in attendance, so it would have behooved them to be at their absolute best.

The catalog is probably taking it's usual toll, and Arnel's extra curricular activities on his own at home recently, have surely not helped his vocal chords to rest any. He's certainly not used to performing so frequently, so he obviously needs to take extra care. I don't care how much energy he has... If the performance is not there, I would have been disappointed if I paid to see a show of this caliber. Cinderella story aside, Arnel still does not measure up to the best that Journey could do as a replacement to me and his enunciations irritate me to no end. By now, he should have had most of them worked out.

There... I said it.

Debbie

Charity show with a Filipino singer. The shows were booked b/f Journey got the Super Bowl gig.

Good point there Daveo,,,
I dont think ANY singer is perfect and also a singer can have an "off night" here and there, but something this big, THE BAND, shouldve prepared better.
If JSS or even Perry , wouldve performed like Arnel did on an international broadcast, I think they shouldve been torched the same way if not worse,,,,

Now that I agree with! There are very few opportunities to reach an audience THAT large and they blew it if it was because he was not prepared. Management and the band blew it. That is the one time you want to be great. Although, the venues were full and people were happy last summer, and those who were there were going nuts. Those same people will buy tickets again, and it wont' matter.

Speaking of Castronovo, he and Ross were fabulous as always. Something sounded different on Neal and Jon's parts, and I don't know if I'm hearing things but it just didn't mesh.
